<서재야회록>의 분위기 구현 양상과 문예적 특질 (The Atmosphere Generating Aspects of and Their Literary Characteristics)

초록

<서재야회록>은 환상적 분위기와 사변적 분위기를 동시에 구현한다. 이러한 양상은 우선 폐쇄적 성격의 무명선비와 달리 조소하고 화내고 화통하게 웃음을 터트렸다 울기도 하며 분탕한 감정을 표출하는 정령들을 통해 무료한 인물 관계에 흥미를 높인다. 둘째, 엿듣기와 엿보기 행위를 대칭적 동선으로 연결해 서재 공간에 마주 앉아 대화체로 진행되는 서사의 정적인 면을 탈피한다. 셋째, 천문 변화의 개입을 통해 단일한 공간 성격을 극복해 낸다. 그날의 일기 상황이나 천체의 흐름에 따른 천문의 변화를 서사 마디마디에 개입해 협소한 공간 이미지를 극복하고 시간의 경과를 알린다. 특히 천문의 변화 속에서 정령들이 등장하며 환상적 분위기를 형성한다.
이와 같은 분위기 구현 양상을 통해 나타나는 문예적 특질은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 다중 나레이터의 등장을 실험적으로 모색한다는 점이다. 작품 초반부터 청자를 의식한 대화체로 시작한다는 사실, 그리고 다섯 명의 인물들이 저마다 균등한 대화 분량을 분담하고 있다는 사실을 통해 한 작품 안에 보다 다양한 목소리를 담고자 했던 문예적 특질을 엿본다. 또한 등장인물 간에 동일한 주제의 질의(質疑) 응답 구조를 연결해서 존재론적 성찰을 하며 지적 탐색 소설의 문형을 추구한다는 점에서도 독창적 특질이 드러난다.

영어초록

<Seojaeyahoerok>unfolds the stories in a study space as its stage with the animated classical scholars’ essential four items—paper, pens, ink stick, and ink stone—as the leading heroes, creating fantastic and philosophical atmosphere.
First, the novel shows its atmosphere through the exposed emotions in contrast: the emotions of the hero scholar in contrary to those of the spirits visiting him. While the hero rarely betrays his emotions, the spirits squander in their laughter and cry, berating and taunting, conciliating and convincing. A dynamic structure is being formed in their relationships contrasting the closed- up and alienated hero scholar and the others.
<Seojaeyahoerok>also creates a special atmosphere through its circulation symmetry among the characters, i.e., eavesdropping and peeping: the hero’s eavesdropping and peeping behavior in symmetry with that of the spirits, who have been watching the hero for a long time. These behaviors divert the tension between the characters during their long conversation throughout.
This novel inserts the astronomic changes in the daily weather context flows in between the storytelling to create the escapism out of the narrow study space, in doing so creating at the same time a special atmosphere. For example, time changes whenever there is an astronomic change, at which time the spirits show up to create fantastic atmosphere.
<Seojaeyahoerok>proposes a meaningful novel in its experimental exploration of many narrators based on the fantasy between the humans and the spirits. We can see the author’s intention from the beginning of the novel with the audience conscious dialogues and by the fact that there are five characters playing the distributed role with the relatively same amount of conversation.
The novel also creates an intellectual atmosphere in that the characters converse on the same theme. In this regard, it is a philosophical novel as well, showing the intellectual exploration, whose atmosphere, along with the fantastic atmosphere, is what <Seojaeyahoerok>depicts in particular.
