동성애 관련 구약본문의 핵심논점 (Central Interpretative Issues of the Old Testament Passages Relating to the Homosexuality Debate)

초록

동성애 문제는 이제 교회 안과 교회 밖을 가르는 윤리적 쟁점을 넘어 교회내부의 균열선을 형성하는 해석학적 이슈로 자리잡았다. 그 복합성으로 인해동성애에 관한 논의는 사회정치적 상황은 물론 윤리와 교리를 아우르는 통전적 이해와 숙고를 필요로 하는 바, 그 기초를 놓는 성서신학적 고찰 역시 엄밀하고 정교하게 수행되어야 함은 자명한 사실이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 동성애를 둘러싼 많은 논의들은 성경 특히 구약성경에 언급된 동성애 관련 구절들을매우 피상적으로 혹은 자의적으로 해석하고 있다. 본 논문은 동성애와 관련해흔히 다루어지는 구약성경의 대표적 본문들을 본래의 문맥 안에서 분석하고동성애의 직접적 쟁점으로 출발하는 대신 확장 가능한 해석의 경계선을 설정하여 생산적 토론의 기초를 마련하기 위한 작업이다. 결과적으로 본고는 창세기 19장과 사사기 19장을 (동)성애의 문제가 아닌 손대접의 풍습과 집단 간 갈등, 그리고 폭력을 수반한 차별행위의 관점에서 보려 하는 "수정주의" 관점이갖는 근본적 취약점을 지적하고, 레위기 18장과 20장의 동성애 금령이 갖는 근본적 논리구조에 주목함으로써 레위기의 금기조항이 동성 간의 연애감정이나 강자-약자의 지배구조를 대상으로 한 것이 아니라 이성간에 하듯 동성 사이에 행해지는 성교행위를 내용으로 함을 주장한다. 이러한 결론은 구약성경이 동성애를 금한다는 전통적 해석에 힘을 실어주지만, 사실 그 함의는 복합적이다. 남성과 여성의 구분은 창조의 근본 질서에 속하며 성애의 감정과 성행위가 남성과 여성의 상보성으로부터 비롯한다는 구약성경의 입장에 근거할 때, 동성간 성행위에 윤리적 정당성을 부여하기는 어려워진다. 반면 구약성경이 명시적으로 금한 것이 (남성과 여성 간에 일어나는 것과 같은) 동성 간의 성교행위라면, 동성-애에 관한 논의는 성교에 이르지 않는 동성 간의 애착과 애정관계라는 모호한 중간지대를 허용하게 된다. 결국 구약성경 본문들은동성애 옹호자들과 동성애 반대자들 어느 편에게도 원하는 만큼의 지지를 허락하지 않는다. 본고는 구약성경이 동성애와 관련한 쟁점들을 해소할 결정적증거를 제시한다고 주장하지 않지만, 기존의 논증들 가운데 구약성경 본문들을 곡해 과장한 측면들을 재검토하여 보다 성숙하고 온당한 성경해석에 기초한 신학적 윤리적 모색을 도울 것으로 기대한다.

영어초록

Homosexuality now has become an interpretive issue that defines dividing line within the church at large. Its complexity requires holistic understanding and deep reflection on the ethical-doctrinal as well as sociological realities, and as a result some sensitivity and precision of biblical theological investigation as a basis for such undertaking. Still, much discussion and arguments regarding homosexuality appears to be based on alarmingly shallow and faulty interpretation of Old Testament passages. This paper addresses this deficiency and aims to provide some basic analysis of the relevant OT texts in their proper context and set some acceptable yet expandable boundaries of interpretation so as to lay foundation for productive discussion of the issue.
The investigation reveals the fundamental weakness of the "revisionist" view of homosexuality that sees Genesis 19 (Sodom) and Judges 19 (Gibea) is about the hospitality expectation, group conflict and racism/discrimination issue rather than homosexuality as such, and argues that the Levitical prohibition (Lev 18 and 20) does not concern with affection between same-sex couple or the disparity of power between two same-sex partners; rather, the prohibition is levied toward coitus between same sex partners attempted in the manner of heterosexual couple would do.
This conclusion does provide support for the traditional understanding that Old Testament is against homosexuality, but its implications are in fact complex. Old Testament teaches that the male-female distinction belongs to the fundamental creation order and sexuality–be it emotional or physical–arises from the complementarity between the two sexes. It is difficult therefore to provide ethical justification for homosexual acts. On the other hand, if what Old Testament explicitly prohibits is sexual union between those of same sex there remains some gray zone for same-sex relationship of affection and closeness shy of actual sexual union. In the end, Old Testament passages examined in this paper supports neither side of the debate to the extent to silence the opposing argument, so this paper does not claim to have given any decisive evidence for resolving the thorny issues of homosexuality debate. It is expected, however, that this paper will help rectify some of the distortion and exaggeration currently found in Old Testament interpretations regarding homosexuality debate, and alternately provide more seasoned and proper interpretation on which future theological and ethical investigation should base.
