초록

본 연구는 1927년에 간행된 『조선해어화사(朝鮮解語花史)』의 마지막장인 「제35장. 갈보종류총괄(蝎甫種類總括)」에서 이능화의 「기생=갈보(매춘부) : 기생(일패), 은근자․은군자(이패), 탑앙모리(삼패)」라는 ‘왜곡된 기생의 정의와 분류법’에 등장하는 다양한 학술적 오류와 왜곡된 내용들을 한국과 일본의 1차자료들과 당대의 사료들을 총망라하여 하나하나 조목조목 바로잡는 것을 목적으로 한다.
1901년 ‘식민주의 정치인’ 쓰네야 세이후쿠(恒屋盛服)의 『조선개화사(朝鮮開化史)』의 「기생=갈보(蝎甫) : 일패(一牌), 이패(二牌), 삼패(三牌)」로부터 120년, 1914년 ‘제국주의 경찰관료’ 이마무라 도모(今村鞆)의 『조선풍속집(朝鮮風俗集)』의 「기생=매춘부(賣春婦) : 일패(一牌), 이패(二牌), 삼패(三牌)」로부터 약 110년, 그리고 1927년 ‘친일 반민족 행위자’ 이능화의 『조선해어화사』의 「기생=갈보(蝎甫)․유녀(遊女) : 일패(一牌), 이패(二牌), 삼패(三牌)」로부터 약 100년 동안 이 2명의 재한일본인과 1명의 친일파에 의한 ‘왜곡된 기생의 정의와 분류법’은 어떠한 의심이나 반론, 구체적인 고찰․검증없이 모든 내용이 마치 정설인 듯 지금까지 여과없이 그대로 재인용․재생산되어 왔다. 하지만 선행 연구성과들과 본 시리즈 연구를 통해 밝혀진 바와 같이 『조선개화사』, 『조선풍속집』, 『조선해어화사』는 ‘기생(妓生)에 관한 다양한 학술적 오류들과 왜곡이 만연한 문헌’으로 ‘우리나라의 기생사(史) 및 기생상(像)을 심각하게 왜곡․훼손시킨 대표적인 3대문헌’이다.
따라서 앞으로 『한국사』, 『한국근대사』, 『한국여성사』, 『한국음악사』, 『한국무용사』 등 ‘기생(妓生)’ 관련 학계를 시작으로 국사편찬위원회의 한국사데이터베이스, 우리역사넷 등 국공립기관의 웹사이트, 신문․방송 등의 언론매체, 『한국민족문화대백과사전』 등의 사전류, 그리고 각종 포털사이트 및 인터넷상의 일반사회에서도 이렇게 오랫동안 방치․묵인해왔던 ‘재한일본인들’과 ‘친일파 이능화’에 의한 ‘기생에 관한 왜곡된 기술들’과 ‘왜곡된 기생의 정의와 분류법’을 하나하나 차근차근 올바르게 바로잡아나가며 청산해야 할 시점이다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to investigate the numbers of academic errors and distortions objectively and empirically one by one found in 「Gisaeng=Galbo(prostitute) : Gisaeng(Ilpae), Eungeunja․Eungunja(Ipae), Tapangmori(Sampae)」 of Lee Neunghwa who adopted, distorted, and expanded such distorted classification method during the Japanese colonial period based on reviewed whole materials and records of the time.
In ‘The Distortion of Gisaeng’s History and Image in the Korean Peninsula’, Gisaeng was distorted as Galbo for the first time in 1901 by Tsuneya Seifuku who wrote JoseonGaehwasa. In 1914, Gisaeng was more seriously concluded and distorted as a prostitute by the Japanese Government-General of Korea’s police officer named Imamura Domo who wrote JoseonPungsokjip. In 1927, Gisaeng was distorted again as Galbo․prostitute by a pro-Japanese collaborator named Lee Neunghwa who wrote Joseonhaeeohwasa. Kawamura Minato who wrote Gisaeng–A Talking Flower in 2001, Suh Jiyoung who wrote A Study on Gisaeng During Japanese Colonial Era (1)–Modern Reconstruction of Kisaeng(Female Entertainers) in Colonial Korea in 2005, and Lee Younghoon who wrote Anti-Japanese Tribalism in 2019 are the ones who most actively utilized and cited ‘Three Representative Literatures that Distorted Gisaeng’s History and Image in the Korean Peninsula’ in the modern times. Kawamura Minato and Suh Jiyoung utilized and cited on the distorted literatures because these literatures match the most with their logic claiming that “Gisaeng was like changnyeo, prostitute, unlicensed prostitute and enforced sex slaves.” In other words, ‘The Distortion of Gisaeng’s History and Image in the Korean Peninsula’ has been continuing from TsuneyaSeifuku(Gisaeng=Galbo)in1901→Imamuradomo(Gisaeng= Prostitute) in 1914→Lee Neunghwa(Gisaeng= Galbo․Prostitute)in1927→KawamuraMinato(Gisaeng=Prostitute․Yunraknyeo) in 2001→Suh Jiyoung(Gisaeng=unlicensed prostitute) in 2005→Lee Young Hun(Gisaeng= Prostitute․enforced sex slaves) in 2019.
However, according to the matters clarified in I and II of this series and matters examined in this study, 『Joseonhaeeohwasa』 are the literatures that involve numbers of academic errors and distortions. Therefore, when citing the parts from these distorted literatures, it is necessary to have an attitude of adopt them after researching on additional historical records while reviewing and securing the logical validity at the same time.
It is impossible to punish Lee Neunghwa and other pro-Japanese and anti-national collaborators who already deceased. Still, one must be aware that the he or she could be stigmatized eternally to the posterities with the dishonor of being called as pro-Japanese collaborator, betrayer, and history distorter in the Korean history based on the records of pro-Japanese activities, betrayal against nation, and distortion of the history in a clumsy manner by making an error of hasty generalization from only few controversial records. One also must discuss about the history with enough generalizable evidences.
