초록

이 글은 마해송의 전쟁 소재 작품을 대상으로 하여, 작가가 기억하는 전쟁 상황과 인식 등을 살피고 이를 바탕으로 하여 전쟁의 기억과 기억의 정치학을 고찰한 것이다. 마해송이 초기 작품에서 보이던 풍자와 저항 정신이 6‧25 전쟁을 기점으로 하여 작품 경향이 달라지는 것을 포착하여 이를 살피고자 하였다. 특히 전쟁을 소재로 한 『앙그리께』에서 전쟁을 인식하는 방식, 즉 반공이 확연히 드러난 것을 염두에 두고 전쟁의 기억과 기억의 정치학을 살폈다.
『앙그리께』가 발표된 1950년대 후반은 당시 지배 세력의 지위 확보/통치를 위해 이데올로기 생산이 요원한 시기다. 이런 측면에서 『앙그리께』는 작가 마해송이 종군작가로 활약하면서 체험하고 경험한 전쟁의 기억을 한편으로는 문학적 상상력을 동원하여 작품화한 것이면서 다른 한편으로 사적 기억을 동원하여 전쟁 자체보다는 사회적 장치로 작동한 것으로 여겨진다. 가령, 『앙그리께』는 전쟁으로 인해 삶이 파괴되고 실존이 위협받는 것을 보이고 있다. 평범했던 사람들의 삶은 어른 아이 할 것 없이 모두가 핍진한 삶을 살게 되고 나락으로 떨어진다. 그러나 이 비극적인 삶의 원인은 모두가 공산당으로 인해 빚어진 것이며 인민군의 잔악함은 공포감을 조성하였다. 따뜻한 마음을 갖고 있는 국군인 구중위의 모습과 달리 인민군의 포악함은 작가의 양극화된 시선을 발견할 수 있다. 이는 한 개인의 사적 경험과 기억에 요인한 것으로만 볼 수는 없다.
결국, 『앙그리께』를 통해 한 개인이 전쟁을 기억하고 소유하는 것이 아니라, 시대적 환경과 밀접하게 연관되어 있음을 알 수 있다. 때문에 기억은 과거의 시간과 추억으로만 작동하는 것이 아니라 현재와 미래를 향한, 즉 공동체적 삶에서 중요한 부분이다. 특히 한 국가의 역사적 사건을 기억하고 기록하는 것은 현재와 미래의 정치적 이해관계는 물론 구성원들의 사회·문화사적 가치를 공유한다는 점에서 중요하게 작동한다고 할 수 있다. 그러므로 창작이란 작가 자신이 경험하고 체험한 것의 결과물이겠지만 작가의 기록은 단지 작가만의 소유를 넘어서는 공적 기록이라는 측면에서 전쟁의 기억과 기억의 정치 문제를 다시 한번 상기하게 된다.
