蒼巖 李三晩의 學書淵源과 學古精神 (A Study on the System of Changam Lee Sam-Man's Calligraphy Theory)

초록

1988년 7월에 전주문화방송(MBC) 주최로 열린 『蒼巖 李三晩 遺墨展』은 창암 서예 연구의 발단을 일으킨 의미 있는 전시였다. 전시에 맞춰 발간된 『蒼巖 李三晩 遺墨帖』(전주문화방송, 1988年刊)에는 수집 전시된 작품이 원색으로 인쇄되어 있다. 책의 뒤편에 첨부한 해설은 향토사학자로서 전북문화재위원이었던 고 작촌(鵲村) 조병희(趙炳喜) 선생이 집필하였다. 「蒼巖 李三晩 書道와 生涯」라는 제하의 장문으로 간단한 생평을 소개한 뒤, 원문과 해석을 제공함으로써 창암 서예연구의 단초를 마련하였다.
이후로 창암에 대한 관심이 재고되어 서첩들이 꾸준히 발굴되었다. 그 중에서도 가장 두드러진 것은 창암 선생의 나이 71세(庚子, 1840년) 때 완산 공기골[上關]에서 집필한 『기오이적(機奧異跡)』의 발굴이다. 창암에게 작품 이외에도 별도의 체계적인 서론이 존재하고 있음은 창암 연구 즉 예술가로서의 그의 작품은 물론 더 근원적으로 미의식과 가치관을 총체적으로 조명할 수 있는 조건이 충족되었음을 의미한다.
『기오이적』을 비롯한 창암의 단편적 서론을 읽다보면 일면 구조적 체계성이 발견된다. 논설의 입장은 필법전수와 자득성가한 작가의 측면으로 대별할 수 있다. 후학들을 위하여 체득한 법칙들을 체계적으로 전술하는 학습론의 성격을 보이는가 하면, 한편으로는 자신의 삶과 관련하여 서의 가치와 궁극적 목적을 성찰하기도 한다. 법(法)의 측면에서 본다면, 전자의 경우에는 전통적인 고법(古法)을 강조하고 후자의 경우에는 법을 초월한 무법(無法)을 역설한다. 전통적인 고법은 역사적으로 검증된 학서의 표준으로서 학서자가 숙련해야 할 필수적 과정이며, 무법의 경지는 자득성가한 서가가 일체의 법을 초월하여 자오(自娛)하며 자유를 만끽하는 예술가의 이상세계이다. 즉 유법을 통한 무법의 실현을 목표로 삼고 있다.
이처럼 창암의 저술과 서첩에 남겨진 문장들을 세밀하게 고찰하면 그만의 득의처와 차별성을 부각할 수 있을 것이다. 그간의 연구들은 창암의 서예를 조명하는 한편 서론에 내포된 철학적 의미를 밝히는 데 치력해왔다. 다만 창암의 서예를 논할 때 문헌적 근거로 삼는 서론들을 변별하지 않음으로써 그 진의가 제대로 파악되지 않은 아쉬움이 있었다. 따라서 본고에서는 기존의 연구성과를 존중하면서, 창암 서론의 구조적 체계에 주목하고 거기에 나타난 중요한 특징들을 분석함으로써 그의 예술관과 궁극적 지향점을 재검토하였다.

영어초록

Organized by Jeonju MBC in July, 1988, “Exhibition of Autographs of Deceased Changam Lee Sam-Man” was meaningful for shedding light on his calligraphy. Published at the same time as the exhibition, Book of Changam's Autographs introduced his life, his original works, and explanations for his works and built a foundation to figure out the world of his art.
Since then, growing interest in the calligrapher has led to the continuous excavation of his scrapbooks, which helped to confirm that he had his own systematic calligraphy theory along with his calligraphy works. That is, the research conditions were met to shed total light on his aesthetics and values as well as his works as an artist.
One would find structural systemicity of some sort while reading the theories on his calligraphy. One is his learning theory to transmit his technique of calligraphy, and the other is his art theory to figure out the technique himself and reach his own level. He developed a learning theory of mentioning the principles that he learned systematically for his pupils on the one hand and reflected on the values of calligraphy and the ultimate goals of art in relation to his own life on the other hand. From the perspective of principles, the former case emphasizes old traditional principles, whereas the latter highlights absence of principles that transcend principles. The old traditional principles represent the standards of calligraphy study that have been demonstrated historically and present an essential course that should be mastered by anyone who studies calligraphy. The level of absence of principles presents the ideal world of a calligrapher and artist that learned principles himself and reached his own level, transcending all principles to have a good time himself and enjoy freedom to his heart's content. That is, his goal was to practice absence of principles through their presence.
A close look at the sentences in his writings and scrapbooks will help to highlight his own elation and differentiation. Previous studies focused on figuring out philosophical meanings in his calligraphy theory while examining his calligraphy works. They, however, did not consider the calligraphy theory as a literature ground to discuss his calligraphy works and accordingly failed to figure out his real intentions. Respecting the research achievements of previous studies, the present study paid attention to the structural systemicity of his calligraphy theory, analyzed its crucial characteristics, and thus reviewed again his view of art and ultimate intention point.
