울산 대왕암의 명칭과 유래 (The Name and Origin of the Daewangam (Great King Rock) in Ulsan city)

초록

울산시 일산동 앞바다에 있는 대왕바위는 다른 이름으로는 龍墜岩이라고 하는데, 용이 승천하다가 그 바위에 떨어져 죽었기 때문에 붙여진 이름이다. 바다에 있는 신비한 바위가 龍이라는 믿음은 여기서도 확인된다. 龍은 곧 海神이므로 이 神을 다른 말로 ‘大王’이라고 불렀다. 史料 및 땅이름에 ‘대왕’이 붙는 것은 바다뿐 아니라 江, 山, 神堂 등 여럿 있으므로 ‘대왕’은 일종의 보통명사다. 그럼에도 이를 실제 대왕으로 믿어 역사상의 어느 임금으로 비정한 저명한 예가 경주시 감은사 앞바다의 대왕암이며, 삼국을 통일한 신라 문무대왕이 여기에 묻혔다고 한다.
울산 대왕암에 대한 언급은 정유재란 記文에 처음 나타나는데, ‘대왕’에 대한 어떠한 암시도 없기 때문인지 韓末부터 1970년대까지는 대신 ‘大洋’岩이 유통되었다. 이 表記는 ‘大王’의 變化形ㆍ發展形이라 하겠다. 마치 ‘댕바위’라는 異稱이 있듯이.
1980년대 중반에 들어와 ‘대왕암’의 이름이 復權되자 ‘대왕00’라고 부르는 근거를 모색하여 울산지역에서는 이를 문무대왕의 왕비가 묻힌 곳이라고 설명한다. 경주 대왕암의 亞流다. 이 王妃說의 취약점이 드러나자 火葬을 했다는 신라의 문무왕, 효성왕, 선덕왕 등이 차례로 그 후보에 오르곤 하였다.
울산대왕암=문무왕비 說은 鄕土誌나 지명유래집 등에 실리면서 成文的 권위를 갖게 되었고, 관광안내 등에 실리면서 전국적으로 확산되어 갔다. 그 설명의 궁색함ㆍ모호함에 당연히 의문은 제기될 것이고, 관련 근거나 사료를 모색하지 않을 수 없지만 종국적으로는 神을 대왕이라고도 불렀던 우리말의 용례에 그 단서가 있다.

영어초록

Daewangam (Great King Rock), located at the seashore of Ulsan city is also called by the name of Yongchuam (Fallen Dragon Rock), because it is believed that a dragon, while ascending to Heaven fell at this spot. The sacred rock of the seashore is associated with the cult of Dragon, and it is assumed that the name 'daewang ('Great King) refers to a sea-god. Historical materials and placenames bearing the word 'daewang" do not refer merely to the sea-god but also the presiding deity of river, mountain and shrines. Daewang Rock of Gameun Temple at Gyeongju is believed to be the burial ground of King Munmu who unified the Three Kingdoms in the 7th century.
The first reference about Ulsan Daewang Rock is found in the texts composed during the Hideyoshi invasion of Korea in the 16th century. However, it does not shed any light on the reason why it is called 'daewang', and perhaps, it is because of this its name changed as Daeyangam (Great Ocean Rock) sometime in the late 19th century, and continued until 1970's. One may consider it as a transformation of the original name.
Ushering into the 1980's the original name of the rock (daewang) was rehabilitated, and the city officials started to invent various theories to support their contention. One such theory was that the place served as the burial ground for the queen of King Munmu. When the weakness of the theory about the consort of Queen Munmu was exposed, names of other kings as King Munmu, King Hyosung and King Sondok was suggestd, and it was argued that their cremation might have taken palce at this place.
Theory about the dedication of Daewang Rock to the consort of King Munmu got textual validity and it became widely prevalent after it was mentioned in the local gazettes, the books about the origin of place-names. One can legitimately doubt the authenticity of this theory, and consider it as fictitious and illogical. Although there is no authentic historical data to explain the origin of this name, one may surmise that it is derived from the fact that 'god' and 'daewang" are more or less synonymous expressions in Korean language. The rock refers to its sacred character, and it may have been associated with some deity.
