This article tries out an ecocritical reading of Amy Timberlake’s One Came Home by taking note of a thirteen year-old Georgie Buckhardt’s peregrination in the American wilderness for the purpose of finding Agatha, Georgie’s elder sister. The ecology of grief as a rite of passage, followed by the disappearance of Agatha and passenger pigeons, stands for the vanishing pastoral ideal in late nineteenth-century American nature. Georgie recognizes the true value of wild nature on the brink of her survival in the destroyed forest. Her bold imagination transforms her into a prey to a cougar and a disembodied message after rolling down to an obscure spot under the cliff; here, she recognizes life is in a state of flux. Although she loses confidence in her complete understanding of the essence of natural objects, she gets over a nostalgic mourning for the absent or a groundless fear of environmental apocalypse any longer. In her mind, the vanishers will live some other places or exist as different forms of materials in the untouched nature.
