한국의 신체문화에서 앎(知)과 함(行)의 관계 -儒家를 중심으로- (The Relationship between Knowledge(知) and Doing(行) in the Somatic Culture of Korea -with a focus on Confucianism-)

초록

유가에 있어서 체육과 무예교육은 지행합일 사상에서 출발한다. 그리고 그 과정은 공부(工夫)를 실천하는 과정에서 완성된다고 할 수 있다. 유가의 지행합일은 도가의 성명쌍수(性命雙修)와 불가의 돈오점수(頓悟漸修)과정에서도 유사하게 나타나고 있는데 대표적인 사례는 불가의 수행법인 삼밀(三密: 身․口․意의 조화)이다. 이와 같은 한국의 전통적인 공부의 과정은 그대 그리스의 신체문화에서도 유사하게 보이는데 그것은 지혜적 인간(the man of wisdom)과 행동적 인간(the man of action)으로 설명 가능하다. 이러한 지행합일의 과정은 ‘앎을 형성해가는 과정’과 ‘앎을 구성해 가는 과정’을 통해 몸과 마음이 합일되며, 지식과 실천이 일치하도록 교육되어진다. 즉, 앎(知)과 함(行)은 불가분의 관계이지 서로 쌍립하는 관계가 아님을 알 수 있었다. 또한 한국의 신체문화에 있어서 앎(知)과 함(行)의 관계는 유가, 불가, 도가의 사상적인 차이와는 무관하게 나타난다고 할 수 있다. 다만, 표현방식, 공부의 과정에 약간의 차이가 있을 뿐이다. 현재에 체육과 스포츠는 일상생활에서 없어서는 안 될 하나의 문화가 되었다. 그러나 서양 중심의 체육교육과 결과중심의 스포츠에 관심이 집중됨으로 인해서 한국에 내재되어 있던 일원론적 신체관이 상실되어버린 것이 아쉽다. 따라서 이제부터라도 한국의 신체문화를 체육과 스포츠에 접목하는 시도가 필요하다고 할 수 있으며, 이러한 과정을 통해 타락해 가는 체육의 정체성과 스포츠의 본질을 찾는 것이 중요하다고 하겠다.

영어초록

Physical education and Martial arts in Confucianism begins from “Unity of knowledge and doing”(知行合一). And it can be said that such learning will be completed during the course of devoting oneself to the study of self-cultivation. Similar teaching to “Unification of knowledge and doing” in Confucianism can also be discovered in the process of “Two-fold training in Nature and Destiny)” in Taoism, as well as in the process of “sudden-enlightenment followed by gradual-cultivation”(頓悟漸修) in Buddhism. And the representative case is the three secret practices or the three mystic things(三密), which is the method of self-cultivation and practice of Buddhist. During the progress of “Jihaenghapil”(Unity of knowledge and doing) as such, body and mind are being unified through ‘the process of forming knowledge’ and ‘the process of constituting knowledge’, and, in the meantime, pupils are to be educated in order that their knowledge is coincided with doing. Results of study indicate that the relationships between knowledge and doing are undividable, and that it is not in parallel or counter relationship. And it can be said that the relationships between knowledge and doing in the somatic culture of Korea are expressed regardless the differences in thoughts of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. Meanwhile, however, there are a bit of differences only in the method for expression, and the process of devoting oneself to study self-cultivation. Nowadays, physical fitness and sports have become a culture that is the must-have in humans’ everyday life. But, due to western-centered physical education and intensive attention focusing on the output-oriented sport games, it is quite regretful that the monistic view of human body that has been inherited in Korean culture is gone. Even from now on, therefore, we are required to attempt to engraft the somatic culture of Korea onto physical fitness and sports, and it is also considered very important for us to seek the intrinsic nature of sport, and to recover the identity of physical education that has been gone astray through such processes of studying self-cultivation and practice.
