쿠사누스의 ‘아는 무지’(docta ignorantia): 대립의 합치와 통일성에 대한 인식 추구 (‘Docta Ignorantia’ by Nicolas of Cusa: Pursuit of Recognition in the Coincidence of Opposition and Oneness)

초록

쿠사누스는 ‘아는 무지’라는 개념을 통해서 앎에 대한 인간의 갈망, 곧 인간 정신의 자기 초월이라는 열망을 표현하고 있으며, 이러한 자기 초월은 무한자에 대한 인식의 무지를 아는 데서 가능하다. 인간 정신의 최대한의 인식을 위해서 쿠사누스는 대립적인 것들을 수용하지 못하는 이성을 넘어서서 자신의 통일성을 통해서 대립의 합치를 수용하는 지성적 통찰과 직관으로 나아간다. 무한한 통일성을 인식하기 위해서 합치의 사유는 무엇보다도 기하학적인 최대와 최소의 합치에 대한 탐구로부터 나아간다. 절대적 최대는 모든 것으로 존재하며 그 어떤 것과도 대립되지 않는다. 이런 절대적 최대 안에는 모든 구별이 사라지고 무한한 통일성, 곧 원리로서의 하나만이 존재한다. 이러한 통일성은 동시에 사물들과 신의 본질을 의미하며 ‘아는 무지’를 통한 인식에 있어서 정신으로부터 인식될 수 없지만, 최종적으로 무한한 신적 통일성을 근거로 해서만 모든 인식이 가능하다. 인간의 인식은 ‘아는 무지’를 통해서 이 접근할 수 없는 통일성에 무한히 다가가게 된다. 이러한 정신의 인식은 인식된 대상으로부터 더 나아갈 뿐만 아니라 항상 반성적으로 자신에게 되돌아오며 심지어 자기 자신을 벗어난다. 쿠사누스는 이러한 인간 인식을 항상적인 접근함 또는 유사하게 됨을 통한 추정으로 규정한다. 이 추정은 점근적인 인식으로서 절대적인 정확한 진리에 대한 참여를 의미한다. 결국 추정적 인식은 진리에 끊임없이 다가가려는 인식을 보여주고, 이것은 파악할 수 없는 방식으로 인식하는 것을 의미하며 인간 인식의 본질적 특성, 곧 ‘아는 무지’를 나타낸다. 더 나아가서 정신의 인식은 정신이 자신을 내적으로 펼치는 통일성으로서 사물들을 측정하는 것을 의미한다. 쿠사누스의 ‘아는 무지’를 통한 인식은 세계와 인간을 하나의 전체로서, 그리고 역동적 통일성으로 파악하는 시도이다. 궁극적으로 이러한 시도의 목표는 절대적이며 순수한 동일성을 파악하는 것이다. 이러한 동일성을 향한 노력은, 객관적 세계에서 제한된 무한성인 인간 정신이 절대적이며 무한한 통일성, 곧 절대 정신에 자신의 근원과 한계를 지니고 있다는 것을 전제로 하고 있다.

영어초록

Nicolas of Cusa expresses human desire as the knowing and aspiration of self-transcendence of the human mind(mens) in his concept ‘docta ignorantia’. This self-transcendence is possible in the knowing of ignorance to recognize the infinite. Through docta ignoratia, our knowledge, however exulted, leans each time towards reaching finite knowledge, namely higher ignorance. For the human mind to engage in optimal recognition, Cusa proceeds to intellectual (intellectus) insight and intuition to receive coincidence of opposition (coincidentia oppositorum) through its Oneness(unitas) beyond reason (ratio) to receive not oppositional things. Therefore, recognition of the infinite Oneness thinking of coincidence advances, above all, from exploration into the coincidence of geometric maximum and minimum. However, the maximum and minimum that Cusa refers to is the maximum that is free from quantitative things and has absolute meaning. Absolute maximum exists as everything and is opposed to nothing. In absolute maximum only the infinite Oneness exists without all distinction. This Oneness is the principle of number and multiplicity, of all thought, and the principle of activity as good. Therefore, infinite holistic Oneness relates to everything based on the disoppositional Oneness in itself. This Oneness also means the essence of God and of things that cannot be recognized in the mind through docta ignoratia. However, all recognition is possible based on the infinite divine Oneness. Since the infinite and the finite are not proportional, the infinite does not completely emerge in the finite, although the infinite emerges in the finite. Eventually, human recognition approximates the inapproachable through docta ignorantia. This recognition of mind goes not only from the recognized object, but also returns reflectively to itself, going so far as to go beyond itself. According to Cusa, this shows the essential aspect of the mind; it is infinite motion that proceeds from being to essence. Cusa sets the human mind as a permanent approach or conjecture(coniectura) through similarity. This conjecture is approximative recognition and means participation in the absolute precise truth. After all, conjectural recognition shows a recognition which permanently approaches truth. In other words, it means the incomprehensibility to understand, and presents an essential character of human recognition, namely, docta ignorantia. The recognition of mind which approaches the essence of things means a content of consciousness that is presented and created from the mind. According to Cusa, this recognition means that the mind measures things with the unity that folds in itself. Recognition through docta ignorantia is an experiment that perceives a world and humans as a totality and a dynamic unity. Ultimately, the purpose of this experiment is to comprehend absolute pure equality. Its effort toward this equality presupposes that the human mind, which is restricted infinity in the objective world, has its origin and limit in the absolute infinite Oneness, namely, the absolute mind.
