조선 세종 초 마련된 상왕전 조알의식의 내용과 그 의미 (A Study on the ritual and its meanings of court conference in the early years of king Sejong’s era in Joseon Dynasty)

초록

조회의식은 전통국가의 지배권력이 의례라는 행위양식으로 구현되는 전형적인 행사이다. 조선 태종은 중앙집권적 체제를 완비하고 의례 제도를 정비하여 조선왕조의 국가의례 체제의 기틀을 만들었다. 그 중 조회의식의 정비는 어떤 요인에 의하여 변화되어 갔는지를 태종조와 태종 양위 직후의 세종 초 조회의주를 분석하여 알아보았다.
이를 위하여 먼저 조선 초기 조회의식의 정비가 이루어지기 전의 바탕을 『고려사』 예지를 통하여 살펴보았다. 『고려사』 예지에 나타나는 고려의 조회 관련 의식은 『대당개원례』를 기준으로 하는 唐制의 영향을 크게 받았다.
그러나 태종 즉위 직후 조회의식에도 변화가 가해지기 시작하였다. 그 변화를 추출하여 살펴보면 四拜禮 도입과 같은 明制의 영향이 강하게 나타나고 있음을 발견할 수 있었다. 고려 말에서 조선 태종조에 이르기까지의 조회의식 정비는 이와 같은 흐름에서 파악할 수 있다.
그러나 태종의 양위와 관련하여, 상왕의 지위를 규정하기 위한 조회의식 마련을 위하여 송제를 참고하게 되었다. 세종 초의 상왕 관련 의주는 태종대의 조회의식 정비 흐름과도 이질적이며, 이후에 계승되지도 않는 의식이다. 이 시점에서 갑자기 송제를 수용하게 된 것은 태종의 양위와 관련한 정치적인 요인이 가장 강력한 영향을 가졌다고 분석할 수 있다.
조선 초 조회(조하)의주의 각 사례 검토를 통해서, 조선초의 의례 제도 정비는 연대순으로 일정하고 지속적인 발전도상을 걸어온 것이 아니며, 각 시기별로 정치현안 등 다양한 요인이 작용하였음을 발견할 수 있었다.

영어초록

Chohoe(朝會, the rite for officials to meet the king) is a typical event that the ruling authority of traditional regime is embodied in a mode of a ceremony. King Taejong of the Joseon Dynasty(r.1401~1418) completed centralism of the government and improved the system of the Five Rites of The State(五禮) to get a firm stand of the tradition of the state rites of the Joseon Dynasty. This study intends to reveal that which factors made the effects on the change of the Chohoe, by analyzing the detailed manuals of the rites which is established in the beginning of the Joseon dynasty, especially right after the abdication of King Taejong in 1418.
For that purpose, this study stated the original base of Chohoe by analyzing the Annals of Rites in the History of Goryo, which was made before the impact of King Taejong’s reformation in the early Joseon Dynasty. The Chohoe in the Goryo Dynasty appeared in the History of Goryo is highly influenced by Tang system, which is on the basis of the Da-Tang-Kaiyuan-Li(大唐開元禮).
It is observed that some important changes occured right after the enthronement of King Taejong in 1401. The gist of the changes was the influence of the Ming system, like the first introduction of Sabaerye(四拜禮, the etiquette of quadruple bow). The changes of the Chohoe, from the late Goryo Dysasty to the reformation of King Taejong, could be explaned on this flow of introducing the Ming system.
However, despite the flow of changes, the compilers of the rites in early Joseon Dynasty had need to quote the Song system for establishing the rites on the status of the abdicated king Taejong. The detailed manuals(儀註) of the Chohoe rites, related to the status of the abdicated king established during the early reign of King Sejong(r.1418~1450), are not only regarded to be disparate in the flow of introducing the Ming style of rites, also not succeeded at all after practiced a couple of times. It could be analyzed that the quotation of the Song system in the early reign of King Sejong is mostly effected by the political factor of the King Taejong’s abdication.
This study reveals that the establishment of the Chohoe rites were not in the way of regular, constant development in the chronological order, but had been effected by various factors like the political events, by analyzing each cases of the detailed manuals of the Chohoe ceremony in the early Joseon Dynasty.
