요제프 알버스의 ‘구축적 공예’ 개념의역사와 교육학적 의미 (Meaning in ‘Constructive Craft’ : Josef Albers's Perceptual Pedagogy)

초록

본 연구의 목적은 요제프 알버스가 서한 및 에세이에서 언급했던 ‘구축적 공예(constructive craft)’의 함의를 파악하여 그 현재적 가능성을 모색하는 것에 있다. 이를 위해 러시아 구축주의, 네덜란드 신조형주의와 같은 알버스의 ‘구축’ 개념 형성기의 동시대 아방가르드 예술의 ‘구축’ 개념과 알버스의 ‘구축’ 개념을 비교하여 그 역사적 맥락을 연역적으로 파악하였다. 러시아 구축주의자들과 비교했을 때 알버스는 ‘구축’이라는 용어를 사용함에 있어 정치적 성향을 표면화하지 않는다. 또한 알버스의 ‘구축’은 신조형주의자였던 반 두스뷔르흐의 엄정한 수학적 법칙에 의해 구성되는 속성 자체를 의미했던 역(逆)구축과도 다르다. 알버스의 구축은 제작 주체 중심 개념으로 의지 계발과 능동적 제작과 같은 교육적 목적과 결부되어있다.
알버스는 구축적 공예가 제작자의 의지 계발과 관련이 있으며 딜레탕티즘에 반대한다고 주장한다. 이는 구축적 공예가 경험주의 철학에 기반한 교육적 목적과 관련되어 있음을 명확히 하는 것이다. 알버스의 ‘구축적 공예’는 다음의 세 가지 이유에서 교육학적인 의의가 있다. 1) 경제성과 효율성에 집중했다는 점, 2) 재료의 물성을 파악하고 새로운 질서를 부여하여 그 가능성을 실험했다는 점, 3) 현실적 태도에 근거해 불완전한 인간의 지각을 반성하는 태도를 취했다는 점이 그것이다.
‘구축적 공예’는 반복적 훈련을 통한 숙련 기능 혹은 그 결과물로서의 미적 대상을 의미한다고 보기 어렵다. 대신 주어진 계획 속에서 전체나 부분의 반복적 개조를 의미하는 변주의 방법론을 통해 끊임없이 상대성을 실험한다. ‘구축적 공예’는 교육적 목적과 결부된, 주변을, 나아가 세계를 깊이 있게 파악하기 위한 윤리적 방법으로서의 실기이고, 완성시킬 수 있는 것이 아니라 발전하고 있는 개념이다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to identify the implications of ‘constructive craft’ that Josef Albers mentioned in his letters and essays, and to explore its present possibilities. Comparing the concept of Albers's ‘construction’ with that of his contemporary avant-garde writers and artists, such as Russian Constructivists and Dutch Neo-Plasticism artists' construction, this paper examined the historical foundation of the concept of ‘constructive craft’. Unlike Russian Constructivists, Albers maintained a certain distance with political tendencies. His position was also different from that of Theo van Doesburg whose theory on interaction was quite similar to that of albers. Van Doesburg insisted that the property itself constituted by exact mathematical laws, whereas the subject of the construction of Albers was more likely to be understood as a maker-centered practices and associated with educational purposes.
Albers argued that 'constructive craft' is related to the development of will and opposes dilettantism, which suggests that the concept of constructive craft is based on empirical philosophy in terms of education. The characteristics of Albers's pedagogy could be summarized as the following. 1) It focuses on economy and efficiency, 2) It offers an opportunity to grasp the physical properties of materials and to experiment the possibility by giving a new order. and 3) Based on ethics, it is designed to experiment the imperfection of human perception.
The meaning of craft mentioned was seldom related to craft made by artisanal labor or aesthetic craft objects made by skilled craftsmen. Instead, the constructive practice constantly experiments with relativity through the methodology of variants, which means a more thorough re-doing of a whole or of a part within a given scheme. ‘Constructive craft’ was a perceptual pedagogy related to how to see the world in depth, rather than a means to change the world. Constructive craft was therefore not intended to produce a concrete outcome but rather to encourage the active exploration of material contingencies.
