초록

본 연구는 미야자와 겐지의 시 <비에도 지지 않고>를 텍스트로 재출간 한 3권의 그림책을 중심으로 원작 시와 그림책의 상호매체적 관계를 탐구하는 한편, 각 그림책의 내포작가에 따른 표현 양상을 비교 연구하는데 목적이 있다. 본 연구에서는 각 작품의 내러티브 탐색을 중심으로 하고 있지만 그림책이 갖는 매체적 특징으로부터 촉발되는 변용 양상까지 주목하였다.
본 연구에서 미야자와 겐지의 <비에도 지지 않고>를 대상으로 분석하는 이유는 근대 시에서는 보기 드물게 한 텍스트를 가지고 여러 그림작가가 그림책으로 재창작했기 때문이다. 그림 작가는 젊은 신예작가부터 100세를 바라보는 노년의 작가까지 연령대도 다르고, 국적과 작품활동 내력도 다르다. 또한 작품의 크기와 형태 및 분위기, 선행 텍스트의 해석 방향과 번역, 주제에 이르기까지 그림책의 구성과 표현양상이 확연하게 차이가 난다.
일단 원문과 각각의 번역문을 비교 검토하고, 시의 다층적 의미가 내포 작가의 변화에 따라 그림책에서 어떻게 의미가 변용되고 수용되고 있는지, 그림책으로 매체가 전환되는 과정에서 글·그림 텍스트의 구성과 표현기법이 각각 어떻게 달라지고 있는지, 그리고 이러한 차이점이 작품의 의미와 해석에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 비교 검토하여 시와 그림책의 상호작용과 서사적 의사소통 구조를 면밀하게 탐구하였다.
<비에도 지지 않고>의 경우 서술자 1인의 고백문이기에 추상적인 내포작가가 작중 화자의 모습과 오버랩되는 경향이 크다. 그림책의 특성상 작중 화자는 이미지로 구체화 된다. 원작자인 미야자와 겐지가 살았던 근대 일본의 농촌 상황을 충실하게 구현한 작품이 있는가 하면, 하얀색 바탕에 배경을 최소한으로 생략하고 인물을 중심으로 이미지를 구현함으로써 형이상학적으로 자연스럽게 삶을 수용하는 모습을 그림 작품도 있다. 또한 곽수진 작가는 작품의 이미지는 전반적으로 청량하고 아늑하다. 페이지마다 인물이 달라지지만, 그중에서 주된 인물은 소박한 일상을 즐기는 도시적인 젊은 여성이다. 내포 작가도 근대 남성이 아닌 현대의 젊은 여성으로 추측된다. 이 작품에서 의도된 서사는 자연히 앞선 작품과는 다른 결을 가진다. 이 3권의 그림책을 통해 각각의 그림작가가 자신만의 스타일과 해석을 가미하여 시 <비에도 지지 않고>를 재해석하는 방식을 살펴볼 수 있었다. 일본의 그림 작가는 물론이고 한국의 그림 작가에 의해 재창작된 미야자와 겐지의 <비에도 지지 않고>에 대한 탐색을 통해 근대 시가 현대 그림책으로 어떻게 수용되어 창의적으로 변용되고 있는지 확인하였다.

영어초록

This study explores the intermediality of an original poem and its picture book. It focuses on three picture books (by three separate illustrators) inspired by Kenji Miyazawa’s poem “Against The Rain,” comparing and studying the expression patterns of each of the three illustrators as well as those of the original poet. Although this study focuses on the narrative of each work, it also examines the transformation patterns triggered by the media characteristics of the picture books.
The motivation behind this study’s analysis of Miyazawa’s “Against The Rain” is that several illustrators of varying nationalities have recreated it as a picture book with a specific text, a rare phenomenon in modern times. Ranging from young to elderly writers, these illustrators differ in terms of age group, nationality, and history of work. In addition, the composition and expression patterns of their picture books differ markedly in terms of size, shape, and the tone of the work, as well as the direction of interpretation of the preceding text, translation, and subject matter.
Thus, we first compare and review Miyazawa’s original text and its adaptation/translation, carefully exploring the interaction and structure of narrative communication between the poem and the picture books. We focus on how the poem’s meaning is transformed and/or accepted in the picture books by different illustrators, how the composition- and expression-related techniques of written and visual texts change during the process of converting media to picture books, and how these differences affect the meaning and interpretation of an original work.
Owing to the nature of a picture book, the narrator in such works is depicted through an image. Some of the picture books faithfully embody the rural situation in modern Japan, where Miyazawa lived, whereas others paint a picture that naturally accepts life in a metaphysical form by minimizing the background and embodying an image focusing on the poem’s characters on a white background. Notably, the adaptation of the poem by illustrator Kwak Soo-jin is generally refreshing and pleasant. Although Soo-jin’s characters change from page to page, the illustrator’s main character is a young urban woman who enjoys a simple daily life. Here, the implied author is presumed to be a modern woman, not a modern man. The narrative illustrated in Soo-jin’s work has a different connection to those in the previous adaptations of Miyazawa’s poem. Comparing these three picture books, we are able to examine how each illustrator reinterprets the original poem by adding their own style and interpretation. By exploring the intermediality of "Against The Rain" and its recreation by both Japanese and Korean painters, we assess how modern poetry is accepted and creatively transformed into modern picture books.
