초록

於于 柳夢寅은 16세기 중반부터 17세기 초반까지 생존했던 조선 중기의 문신이자 대표적인 문장가로, 尙古的 文學觀을 지니고 현실 지향적인 작품을 창작했으며, 현실과의 대립 속에서 다양한 갈등을 詩化한 인물로 알려져 있다. 또 어우의 문집을 통해 어우가 詩와 文을 확연히 구분하여 인식했으며 詩보다 文에 주력했다는 것을 알 수 있다.
어우의 글을 살펴보면 어우는 道의 근원에서 자득하여 자신의 마음속에 쌓여 있는 것이 드러난 문장을 최상의 문장으로 보았고, 그와 같은 문장을 聖人의 經典, 先秦과 兩漢의 글, 그 밑으로 韓愈와 柳宗元의 저작에서 볼 수 있기 때문에 이들의 문장을 전범으로 학습해야 한다고 생각했다. 시에 대해서도 어우는 詩란 情에서 나온 것이기 때문에 直截한 표현을 해야 하며, 천근하고 연약한 속된 표현이라도 시인의 眞情을 나타내는 諷刺와 寓意를 담기 위한 것이라면 인정해야 한다고 보았다. 또, 좋은 시란 古詩와 같이 높은 格調를 지닌 시이기 때문에 소리와 措語에 주의해야 한다고 생각했다.
어우의 詩文論으로 본다면 어우는 先秦 兩漢과 한유․유종원의 문장, 『詩經』을 중심으로 한 古詩와 이백․두보․한유의 시를 전범으로 삼아 心得과 自得을 주장했고, 표절과 답습의 경향을 지닌 宋나라 이후 시기의 詩文을 배격하여 眞情에서 나온 直截한 표현을 추구했다고 할 수 있다.
현재 전하는 어우의 작품들을 살펴볼 때 그의 시론과 시세계의 실제 양태는 하나로 합일된다고 하기 보다는 상당부분 겹쳐진다고 규정할 수 있다. 이러한 거리는 志와 情이 하나로 합일된 眞情을 詩化한 것이 시라고 여겼던 어우의 詩觀에 기인한 것이라 보인다. 어우는 일상적이고 평범한 표현이나 규범적이고 은미하며 어려운 표현 모두를 인정했는데, 그것은 어우가 어떻게 표현하느냐보다 어떤 것을 표현하느냐가 더 중요하다고 여겼기 때문이다. 이렇게 본다면 그의 시는 표현 수법과 서술 방법에서 어느 것 하나같은 것이 없지만, 뒤집어 본질 면에서 본다면 어느 것 하나도 다른 것이 없다고 할 수 있다. 어우의 시는 본질적인 면의 동질성을 바탕으로 상황과 감흥의 차이에 따라 각각의 상황에 가장 直截한 표현을 이루어 낸 시라고 할 수 있다. 그런 점에서 어우의 시는 언제나 다르지만 같은 것이고, 언제나 같지만 다른 것이다.

영어초록

Eowoo Yu, MongIn, who lived from the mid 16th century to the early 17th century, was a representative writer as well as a literary subject in the mid-Joseon period. He is prescribed as a man who kept the literary sense which honors the old literary works and composed reality oriented pieces, while he turned the diverse conflicts that occurred in the clash with the reality into poetry. By taking a look at the anthology of Eowoo, we can find out that he surely separated poetry from writing and that he devoted himself to writing than poetry.
If we look at the writing of Eowoo, we can tell that Eowoo thought the best writing was writing that showed things which were stacked in one’s mind that one gained by oneself in the root of enlightenment. Because these writings could be seen in the scriptures of saints, the writing before the Qin Dynasty and during the Han Dynasty, and the work of Han Yu and Liu Zong Yuan, Eowoo thought people should learn these writings as a example. In addition, because Eowoo thought poetry comes from affection, he thought people should use proper expressions. Moreover, he thought people should accept shallow, delicate expressions if they were meant to embody the satire and analogy that shows the poet’s genuine sentiment. Once more, he thought people should pay attention to the sound and usage of words because he thought good poetry was poetry that had a noble style like the ancient poems.
Looking at Eowoo’s theory of poetry and writing, we can see that Eowoo claimed understanding of the mind, and understanding by oneself based on the writing of before the Qin Dynasty, the Han Dynasty, Han Yu, and Liu Zong Yuan, the ancient poetry surrounding 『The Book of Odes』, and the poems of Li Bai and Du Fu. And that he persued proper expression that emerged from the genuine sentiment by denouncing the poetry and writing after the Song Dynasty that has the tendency of plagiarism and imitation.
By looking at the work of Eowoo, which are still carried through, we can define that the aspects of his theory on poetry and his poetic world are not the same, but similar in several ways. This distance was caused by his view of poetry that poems are turning genuine sentiment, which is the unity of sense and sentiment, into poems. Because Eowoo thought what you express was more important than how you express, he acknowledged both ordinary, common expressions and hard, hidden expressions. In that sense, his poetry has nothing same in the point of expression technique or description method. But, to put it in another way, we can say that nothing is different in the point of essence. Eowoo’s poetry is based on the homogenity of the intrinsic aspects. So it has the most right and proper expression in each situation based on the difference of the situations and inspiration. In that sense, Eowoo’s poetry is always different but same, and always same but different.
