18세기 중엽 사근도 형지안과 단성현 호적대장의 역인 기재 비교 분석 (A Comparative Analysis of Records in the Sageundo Station Register and the Danseong-Hyun Household Register, 1747-1750)

초록

조선 왕조는 각 지역 요충지에 역(驛)을 설치하여 한성을 중심에 둔 교통통신망을 설립하였다. 역에는 역리, 역노비, 일수 등 각종 역인(驛人)이 배속되어 역역(驛役)을 담당하였다. 역인에 대한 기록은 지리지, 역지 등 각종 자료에 단편적으로 드러나며, 역인 개개인에 대하여 자세한 정보를 기재하고 있는 자료는 크게 두 가지이다. 첫째는 역도(驛道)에서 역역 담당자를 파악하여 작성한 형지안이다. 둘째는 역촌(驛村)을 포함한 군현에서 호구(戶口)를 파악하여 작성한 호적대장(戶籍大帳)이다. 그간의 연구에서는 자료적 한계로 인하여 역도 형지안이나 호적대장이 별도로 분석되었다. 그런데 최근에 사근도 형지안(1747)이 발굴되면서 자료 활용 면에 있어서 새로운 가능성이 열렸다. 사근도형지안에는 단성 벽계역, 신안역 기록이 있고, 단성현 호적대장의 경우 그와 가까운 1750년에 도산면 벽계리, 북동면 신안리의 기록이 존재한다. 즉, 이 두 자료는 비슷한 시기와 지역의 역인을 기재한 명부라는 측면에서 상호 비교의 가능성이 열려있는 것이다.
분석 결과 두 자료에서 공통적으로 파악된 역인도 있었지만 그 비율은 높지 않았고, 오히려 둘 중 한 자료에서만 파악된 역인의 수가 상당하였다. 또한 두 자료에 모두 파악되었더라도 동일인의 직역을 다르게 기재한 경우도 발견되었다. 사근도형지안과 단성현 호적대장은 작성 주체, 목적, 파악하려는 대상 등이 다르기 때문에 비슷한 시기 같은 지역의 역인 기재에 있어 차이를 보일 수밖에 없었다. 형지안의 경우 역도나 역이 주체가 되어 역을 운영하는 데에 필요한 역인과 그 후보군을 최대한 파악하려는 자료이다. 호적대장의 경우 군현이 중심이 되며, 한 군현에서 대장 작성에 필요한 직역의 종류와 직역자의 수가 정해져 있기 때문에 호적대장에 기재될 역인의 수가 어느 정도 결정되어 있다. 두 자료의 비교를 통하여 둘 중 어느 자료도 한 지역의 모든 역인을 완벽하게 파악한 자료는 아니기 때문에, 역인의 실태를 파악하기 위해서는 자료의 성격과 특성을 잘 이해하면서 각 자료의 공백을 서로 보완해 나가는 노력이 필요하다는 점을 알 수 있었다. 나아가 군현과 역도라는 이중적인 범주의 행정 시스템이 같은 대상을 어떤 식으로 같게 혹은 다르게 파악하고 있는지에 대한 단서를 얻을 수 있었다.

영어초록

The Joseon(朝鮮) dynasty established a traffic network centered on Hanseong(漢城) by installing a number of stations(驛) at important traffic hubs in each region in the state. There were various people called station workers/(驛人) such as the station officials(驛吏), station clerks(日守), station servants/slaves(驛奴婢), who belonged to and worked at those stations. These days, the two kinds of data is existing that describes detailed information about each person in charge of station works. The first one is the Hyeongjian(形止案), the station register identifying the people in charge of station works and complied by each station route(驛道). The second one is the household register(戶籍), the list grasping the household and people in a prefecture. In preliminary studies about station people, these two types of data was analyzed separately due to the data limitation. Recently, however, a new possibility has been opened in terms of utilization of data as a result of the excavation of Sageundo Hyeongjian(沙斤道形止案) complied in 1747. There is a record of Byeokkye Station(碧溪驛) and Sinan Station(新安驛) in Sageundo Hyeongjian. On the other hand, there is a record of Byeokkye-ri in Dosan-myeon and Shinnan-ri in Bukdong-myeon in the Dansung-Hyeon household registers complied in 1750. In other words, it is possible to compare these two data because these two are the list of station people complied in similar periods and regions.
The results of the analyses showed that there were some station workers who appeared in both data, but the number of them was not a lot. Rather, there were more station workers who appeared in the only one data. In addition, it was also found that there were several cases that the same person was described as differently in terms of his/her work or status. Because of the difference in subject, purpose, and object to be listed in compiling the two data, there is a difference in the description of the same station workers in the same area at the same time. In the case of Hyeongjian, it is the data to identify the station workers and the candidates required to operate the stations and complied by the station routes or the stations. In the case of the household register, on the other hand, the types of the works/duties in the state and the number of people to be listed in a prefecture was determined to some extent. In order to grasp the actual situation of the stations workers, it is necessary to understand the characteristics of these two data and fill the blanks that each data has by comparing them to each other. Furthermore, under the dual system of the administrations of the state and the stations, it is possible to get a clue how each side respectively grasps and control their people.
