The Marriage Plot, Jeffery Eugenides’ novel published in 2011, raises questions and problems in fiction-making and the act of reading. As a metacritical fiction, The Marriage Plot responds to literary theory and criticism, mainly Post-structuralism or Deconstruction, and in doing so, urges us to examine the ways we approach a text itself. In seeking to criticize the way in which a reader self-purposefully consumes a text, The Marriage Plot ironizes the novel’s heroine who performs as a narcissistic reader, and in turn, distinguishes the pleasure of consumption from the pleasure of text. This novel’s use of A Lover’s Discourse by Roland Barthes is a particularly good example of how the narrative shapes the interaction between the reader and the text that might engender the pleasure of bliss or jouissance in Barthes’ term, rather than the pleasure of comfort. Introducing Barthes’ concept of pleasures, elaborated in The Pleasure of the Text(1975) and experimented in A Lover’s Discourse(1977), this paper draws attention to the net of textual allusions to A Lover’s Discourse in The Marriage Plot. In doing so, this paper aims to provide one way to read The Marriage Plot in conversation with the work of Barthes, and explains why Barthes is crucial to Eugenides’ making of the novel as well as to our understanding of various types of pleasures in approaching a text.
