사목상담 안에서 인간중심상담의 적용에 관한 연구 (A Study on Person-Centered Therapy’s Implementation in Pastoral Counseling)

초록

본고에서는 사목상담과 인간중심상담 분야의 문헌들을 바탕으로, 사목상담에서 인간중심상담의 핵심가치들이 어느 정도로 진실성 있게 적용될 수 있는지를 고찰한다. 본고는 양자 간에 존재하는 신학과 철학의 근본적인 이론적 차이점들을 인정하면서, 실천적인 면에서 상보적인 가치를 통한 통합적 전망을 지니고 있음을 조명한다. 또한 양자 간의 공통되고 상보적인 가치와 태도들을 발견하고 계발함으로써 얻게 되는 상담자들과 내담자들의 긍정적인 면들을 제시한다. 특히 그리스도교의 ‘이타적인 배려와 사랑’의 계명들과 인간중심상담의 핵심가치들이 상보적으로 공유할 수 있는 가치와 역할을 지니고 있음을 밝힌다. 이러한 긍정적인 연구들에 대해서, 일부 사목상담자들과 인간중심상담자들은 ‘그것은 언어의 표면적인 유사성들에 의한 것’이라며 경고하고 비판한다. 그러므로 본고에서는 사목상담과 인간중심상담의 차이점들을 이론적으로 분석하면서도, 동시에 실천적인 차원에서 양자 간에 ‘상보적인 효과’를 창출할 수 있는 영역들을 탐구한다.
더불어, 본고는 인간중심상담의 상보적 요소들을 사목상담 안에 설정하고 적용하여 ‘가톨릭 인본주의적’ 사목상담의 한 모델이 되도록 영향을 주는 요인을 규명한다. 예컨대 사목현장에서 사목상담에 관여하고 있지만 상담심리에 관한 적절한 교육과 수련을 받지 못한 사목자들에 대한 우려들이 있다. 반면에 전문적인 사목상담의 자격을 갖춘 사목자들이, 윤리적으로 중립적인 심리 치료적 환경 안에서 사목자 본연의 역할을 간과할 소지도 있다. 따라서 본고는 사목상담의 현실을 분석하면서, 사목자들이 사목적인 상담관계에서 그리스도교 신앙과 인간중심상담의 공통된 가치와 실천을 효과적으로 적용할 수 있는 방법적인 가능성들을 고찰한다. 이는 첫째, 내담자 중심의 ‘치료관계’의 적용, 둘째, 인간중심상담의 핵심가치들의 적용, 셋째, 인간중심기법의 세부적인 적용에 관한 것이다. 결론적으로 본고는 사목자들이 양자 간에 공유하고 보완하는 가치와 태도들을 사목적인 상담관계 안에 효과적으로 적용함으로써, 내담자들에게 더 풍요로운 사목적 돌봄을 제공할 수 있음을 제안한다.

영어초록

This study, through a review of the literature in the Pastoral counseling and Person-Centered Therapy(PCT) domains, seeks to establish the extent to which the theory and practices of the PCT can be genuinely integrated into a model of Pastoral counseling. The literature indicated that while fundamental theological and philosophical differences exist between both approaches, it was not the depth of these differences, but rather their practical management by both sides, which influenced the complementary prospects for integration. The review also highlights the advantages for both practitioners and clients of seeking to establish and further develop areas of shared and complementary values/attitudes, with specific reference to the core values of the PCT and the Christian concept of ‘care and love of the other’. Such positivity was tempered by some severe criticism from deeply committed proponents of both approaches, as well as by warnings against reading too much into some surface language similarities. The research identifies, therefore, if both approaches can generate sufficient synergy to exist in complementarity at a practical level, with the managing of the theoretical differences of both sides.
The study has also highlighted factors that could impact on the construction and implementation of PCT into Pastoral counseling, as a Catholic humanistic integrated model of pastoral counseling on the basis of the love of Jesus for a person. For instance, within the pastoral domain, concern is expressed about the large numbers of clergy engaged in Pastoral counseling with little or no formal training in that area. Concerns have also been raised, however, in the matter of Priests, who have qualified as pastoral psychotherapists, being required to professionally function in morally neutral therapeutic environments. Therefore, this research suggests that it could be possible as an effective method for these issues to implement PCT in pastoral counseling as follows: firstly, the implementation of client-centered ‘therapeutic relationship’, secondly, the implementation of person- centered ‘core values’, thirdly, the implementation of person-centered ‘micro skills’. In conclusion, the research suggests that Priests should implement effectively into pastoral counseling relationships, the advantages coming from the areas of shared and complementary values/attitudes for the benefit of the counselee within the pastoral domain.
