초록

일반적인 정토에 관한 인식은 염불삼매를 통한 왕생이 대부분을 차지하는 것으로 인식되어 오고 있으나 초기정토의 도작을 중심으로 당나라 초기에 활동하였던 정토행자들은 왕생의 결과보다는 현세에서 계율에 기초를 바탕으로 한 수행을 중요하게 인식하고 있었다. 계(戒)의 특성은 삼학의 근간을 이루고 있는 것이고, 출가한 수행자와 재가자(在家者)들이 공통적으로 지켜야 하는 신행(信行)의 첫걸음이며, 열반에 이르는 과정이며, 신심을 일으키는 근간이다.
대승불교의 이상적인 보살은 중생을 제도하기 위해서는 바라밀행과 서원이 완성되어 그 결과로써 계(戒)․정(定)․혜(彗)의 삼학의 체계가 확립되어야 하고, 그 중에서도 계율은 수행자가 추구하는 열반을 실현하기 위한 기초적인 규범으로 확립되어야 한다. 삼학의 상호작용에 의한 끊임없는 정진을 위한 실천의 방법으로서 올바른 보살도는 계율에 의지하여야 하고 또한 계율은 보살도의 실천에 의지하여 보완되어야 한다.
또한 정토에서 지향하는 수행의 궁극적 목적은 왕생(往生)에 있다. 이러한 과정에서 정토에 계율을 기초로 삼고 과위(果位)를 이루어 보살도를 적극적으로 실천하는 사상 속에서 발견할 수 있는 하나의 통일성이 분명히 존재한다. 물론 정토에서는 여러 수행법을 제시하고 있고 이러한 정진을 통한 끊임없는 수행을 강조하고 있다. 그렇지만 도작은 일체의 중생들이 쉽게 실천할 수 있는 대중적인 불교를 개창(開倉)하면서 『불설무량수경』의 십념왕생사상과 『불설관무량수경』의 하품하생을 일체의 중생들에게 적용하여 염불수행을 통하여 성불할 수 있다고 주장하면서 현실적인 왕생의 수행법을 권장하고 있다.
이러한 실천의 방법으로 중국에서 최초로 모감주 열매로서 염주를 만들어 나누어 주면서 칭명염불을 강조하였고 콩과 염주를 사용하여 아미타불의 명호를 숫자를 헤아리면서 아미타불을 부르는 정토수행을 권장하고 있다. 이와 같은 일상의 수행과 더불어 자신의 교학적인 체계를 세우기 위하여 도작은 『안락집』을 찬술하였는데 소의경전으로는 『정토삼부경』을 논거로 삼았고, 그 가운데에서 특히 『불설무량수경』을 중시하고 있음을 살펴볼 수 있다. 또한 많은 대승경론을 인용하여 『안락집』을 찬집하였으므로 어느 한 사상에 치우치지 않은 여러 불교사상을 섭렵한 학자임을 알 수 있으며, 여기에 『열반경』 및 중국 찬술로 여겨지는 위․의경(僞疑經)까지도 동등하게 인용하면서 자신의 교학적 이론을 완성하였다.
이러한 교학적 체계와 정토수행의 실천적 방법으로 팔정도(八正道)를 유지하면서 중생계에 부처님의 가르침인 6바라밀을 실천하는 것으로서 집약하였고, 신심과 회향 및 계율을 수행의 기초로써 인식하고 있었다. 즉 수행과 계율은 보살의 서원인 ‘상구보리 하화중생’이라는 자각이 명확히 『안락집』에 내재되어 설명되고 있는 것이다.
