여성 무당생애사를 통해 본 무속 전승의 변화 양상 (The Change of Korean Shamanism’s Transmission Shown In Oral Life History of Female Shamans)

초록

현대 한국사회는 고도로 산업화되었음에도 불구하고, 무속은 성행하고 있으며 무당이 증가하고 있다. 이와 같이 현대사회의 과도한 경쟁체제 속에서 무당들은 신도들을 유치하기 위해 철저히 점복 시장상황에 발맞춰 가고 있으며, 이로 인해 전통 무당과 차별화된 새로운 경향의 무당들이 양산되고 있다. 시장의 상품처럼 점복이나 부적을 대중의 요구에 맞게 전문화․세분화시키기도 하며, 신문․잡지․텔레비전 프로그램․인터넷 등을 적절히 홍보로 활용하기도 한다.
이러한 현상은 무속의 전승방식(입무, 무업, 교육)의 변화로서 무당의 삶의 이야기와 목소리를 통해서 파악될 수 있다. 이에 본고에서는 전통적인 무업 전승방식을 경험한 무당과현대 변화된 무업 전승방식을 경험한 무당의 구술생애사를 통해, 급격히 현대화된 한국사회에서 무당이 전통적인 무업과 합리적인 무업 사이에서의 그들의 협상방식과 변화양상을 그려내고자 한다.
현대 무속의 전승방식에 있어서 무당의 입문 방식은 전통 방식과 비교할 때 크게 변화되지 않았다. 그러나 현대화로 인해 교통통신이 발달하면서 단골권이 해체되었으며, 이로 인해내림굿 전에 단골을 형성하기 위해 연행했던 쌀걸립과 쇠걸립의 입문의례가 사라졌다. 또한단골권의 해체로 인터넷 홈페이지나 각종 광고를 통해 단골을 형성하는 경향이 나타났다. 전통적인 신부모와의 학습 관계의 단절로 인해 첨단기기나 CD․서적, 청배무당을 통해 굿을독학하는 경향을 나타냈으며, 무형문화재 전수회관이나 굿학원을 다니기도 했다.
이와 같이 전통적인 사제관계인 신부모와 신자식 관계의 단절로 인한 편리하고 신속해진무업 학습 및 상업적 목적의 신내림굿의 증가는 무속 전승방식의 변화와 무당의 대량 양산을초래하고 있다. 이러한 한국무속의 전승방식의 변화는 ‘가짜 전통’이 아니라 한국 종교현상으로서 무형문화재 보유자를 넘어서 일반 무당들의 생애사를 통해 연구가 확대될 필요성이있다.

영어초록

In highly industrialized modern Korean society, shamanism is prevalent and shamans are increasing. In the excessive competition system of modern society, Korean shamans are thoroughly keeping pace with the market situation to attract customers; as a result, a new kind of shaman differentiated from traditional shamans is emerging. Like market products, fortune-telling or amulets are specialized and subdivided to meet the needs of customers, and newspapers, magazines, TV programs and the Internet are appropriately used for publicity.
As this phenomenon is a change in the transmission of Korean shamanism, it can be understood through the stories and voices of the shaman's life.
Therefore, this paper aims to delineate the negotiation and changes between traditional and rationalized shaman’s practices, through the oral life history of a shaman who experienced the traditional shaman’s practice and two shamans who experienced modern shaman’s practice.
In the transmission of modern Korean shamanism, initiating rite of the shaman has not changed much compared to the traditional rite. However, Dangolgwon, the area where a shaman managed the congregation, was dismantled by the development of transportation and communication due to modernization; the initiating rites such as Ssalgeollib and Soegeollib performed to make believers disappeared. In addition, because of the dissolution of Dangolgwon, a tendency to form regular customers using Internet homepages and various advertisements emerged. Because of severance of the traditional learning relationship with the spiritual mother, modern shamans tried to learn shaman’s ritual through cutting-edge devices, CDs and books. They not only learned shaman’ ritual working with other professional shamans but also learned that attending the Intangible Cultural Heritage Training Center or the Gut Academy.
Like this, the convenient and quicker learning of Korean shaman’s practice because of the severance of the traditional relationship between spiritual child and spiritual parent and the increasement of commercial Naelim-Gut(initiating rite) are leading to a change in the transmission of Korean shamanism and the rapid increasement of shamans. This changes in the transmission of Korean shamanism are not a 'fake tradition' but a Korean religious phenomenon; as a result, it might be necessary to expand the study through the oral life history of ordinary shamans beyond the holders of intangible cultural assets.
