해양지식 플랫폼으로서의 전국해양문화학자대회 (The Marine Culture Scholars’ Congress in Korea as the platform for marine knowledge discourse)

초록

목포대학교 도서문화연구원과 국립해양문화재연구소가 이끌어 온 전국해양문화학자대회는 2009년에 1회 대회를 시작한 이래로 2019년 10회 대회까지 지속했다. 이 글은 지난 10년 동안 매년 개최했고 1631편의 논문이 발표된 전국해양문화학자대회가 그동안 어떠한 기능을 수행했는지를 검토하고 앞으로의 과제를 탐색한 총평이다. 해양지식의 풍성한 잔치였던 전국해양문화학자대회가 기여한 핵심은 탈중앙의 지식 플랫폼으로서의 역할이었다. 전국해양문화학자대회의 주축은 역사학과 민속학이었다. 해양민속학은 토착지식, 지방지식, 민속지식으로서의 특징을 지닌다. 해양사학은 교류ㆍ교역ㆍ상호관계를 다루는 사실의 발굴과 재구성에 집중된 경향이 있고, 이론 모델을 시도한 것이 민속학과의 다른 차이이다. 해양생태의 위기 앞에 해양생태학은 1회대회 이래 줄곳 독립 세션을 구성하고, 생태, 정책, 민속, 관광 등 분과학문 간의 융복합적 논의를 끌어왔다. 관광학에서는 해양생태관광이 논의의 초점이 되었다. 해양레포츠학은 낙후된 도서지역의 개발에 치중했다. 또한 전국해양문화학자대회는 ‘해양이슈’라는 패널을 조직하여 현안에 대면하고자 했다. 민속학과 역사학 간의 괴리를 좁히는 것은 해양문화학이 안아야할 과제의 하나로 진단했고, 해양문화연구의 정치성을 어떻게 처리할 것인지를 숙제로 삼았다. 어민 등 현장실무 종사자들이 지식형성의 주체로 설 수 있는 방안의 강구도 필요하다고 보았다. 그리고 특수분야의 지식에서 나아가 사회적 파급력의 확대를 위하여 해양문화학을 보편적인 지식으로 이론화하고 사회에 메시지를 던지는 작업도 과제로 진단했다.

영어초록

The Marine Culture Scholars’ Congress in Korea led by Mokpo National University’s Institution for Marine & island cultures and the National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage, began its first conference in 2009 and continued to its 10th in 2019. This article is a general review of the Marine Culture Scholars’ Congress in Korea, which has presented 1631 papers during the past 10 years and explored future works. The key contribution to the Marine Cultural Scholars’ Congress in Korea, rich in marine knowledge discourse, played a significant role in decentralizing knowledge platform. The main role of the Marine Cultural Scholars’ Congress in Korea were historian and folklorist. The main characteristics of marine folklore are indigenous knowledge, local knowledge and folk knowledge. Marine history mainly talks about the rediscovery and restructure of facts dealing with exchange, trade, and mutual relations, and suggests theoretical models that makes a difference from folklore. In the face of the crisis of marine ecology, it has attempted to have an independent session since its first conference, and has paid attention to interdisciplinary discourse with ecology, policy, folklore, and tourism. In tourism, marine ecological tourism has become main issues of its discourses. Marine Leports has focused on the redevelopment of deprived area in islands. In addition, the Marine Cultural Scholars’ Congress in Korea organized a panel called ‘Maritime Issues’ to deal with pending issues. Narrowing the gap between folklore and historical study has been diagnosed as one of the main issues that marine cultural studies should take care of and its remain issue is how to deal with the political nature of marine cultural research. Furthermore, it is necessary to find ways for practitioner including fishermen to play the role as the main agents of discourses. In addition, beyond knowledge in special fields, the creation of theory in marine cultural studies as universal knowledge becomes the main task to expand social influence as well as messages to society.
