고시조를 통해 살펴본 우리나라 전통색채 연구 (A Study of The Korean Traditional Colors in Old Korean Verse)

초록

색채는 동서고금을 통하여 인간의 일상생활 속에서 무의식적으로 시각이나 감성의 상징이 되어왔다. 이에 본 연구는 우리 민족의 전통색채 관찰의 대상으로 그 시대의 자연환경과 생활주변을 주목하고 양반과 평민의 생활사를 동시에 살펴볼 수 있으며 종교나 철학과 같은 이념적 장치로부터 어느 정도 자유롭고 동시에 자연환경과 생활주변을 기록한 유산으로 고시조를 연구의 대상으로 선택하였다. 삶의 환경과 생활의 단면들을 노래한 200여 편의 고시조 중에서 직접적인 색채 언어를 사용하였거나 특정 색채 인지가 가능한 색채표현이 들어 있는 80여 편을 선정하여 시조별 배색표를 제작해 보았다. 이를 다시 기존의 배색 이미지 공간과 형용사 이미지 공간에 배치시켜 고시조에 사용된 색채 표현들의 분포를 살펴보았다. 또한 고시조에서는 특정 색상 또는 색채 표현이 반복하여 사용되고 있음을 발견하고 사용 색채의 빈도를 측정함으로써 보다 신뢰할 수 있는 색채분석을 유도 하였다. 분석 결과, 고시조에 나타난 색채 표현은 극단적으로 차갑고 무거운 색상은 발견되지 않은 채, 전반적으로 고른 분포를 나타내었는데 고채도 고명도 보다는 중성색 계열에서 넓은 분포도를 보였다. 사용 빈도에 있어서는 가옥, 밭과 논, 자연소재 생활도구들, 봄날의 새벽, 비오는 정경 등 평화롭고 소박한 자연의 색채와 소색들이 가장 많이 나타났으며, 이어 꽃을 표현한 따뜻한 난색 계열의 색상, 차갑고 청초한 물과 식물, 눈의 색채, 그리고 달밤의 숭고한 서정적 색채들이 그 뒤를 이어 관찰되었다. 하지만 이러한 동일계의 색채 표현 중에도 붉은 꽃, 짙푸른 나무나 하늘, 흰 구름, 노란 나비 등 주목성이 강한 원색들이 적은 부분이지만 강렬하게 대비를 이루고 있는 것이 빈번히 관찰되는데 이러한 특징적 색채 표현은 은은한 자연과 삶의 일상 속에서도 색상의 강한 대비와 그로 인한 표현의 상징성을 즐긴 우리 민족의 세련된 미의식이나 색채감각으로 해석될 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

Colors subconsciously became symbols of perception or senses in the ordinary human life through all ages and countries and applicable to all times and places. With observation of traditional colors of our nation as the object of this study, the life history of nobles and common citizens can be observed simultaneously by focusing on natural environment and living surroundings of the time period, and as a heritage that recorded the natural environment and living surroundings while at the same time remaining relatively free from any religious or philosophical ideologies, Gosijo was selected as the subject of this study. Among the approximately 200 volumes of Gosijo that sing the living environment and about life, approximately 80 volumes that use direct language of color or contain color expression in which recognition of specific colors were selected and produced a color scheme diagram by each Sijo(three verse Korean poems). They were then arranged on the previous color scheme image scale and adjective image scale and observed the distribution of color expressions used in Gosijo. Also, having discovered that specific colors or color scheme expressions are repeated used in Gosijo, a more reliable color scheme analysis was made possible by assessing the frequency of use of color schemes. The results of the analysis did not find any extremely cold or heavy colors in the color scheme expression of Gosijo and found an overall even distribution and rather than high saturation or high brightness, wide distribution was found in the neutral tone color range. In the frequency of use, peaceful and simple natural tones and discoloring were most frequently found in houses, fields and gardens, natural material living tools, dawn of a spring day, scenery of a rain, followed by warm tones that express flowers, cold colors of water, plants and snow, and lyrical colors of sublimity of the moon. However, even in such uniformity of color schemes, although in small amounts, strong prime colors that attract the eyes such as in red flowers, bright green trees and the bright sky, white clouds, and yellow flowers create strong contrast are frequently observed and this characteristic color expression can be interpreted as the strong contrast of colors in the natural daily life and the resulting color scheme senses that is graceful yet subconscious of our people who have enjoyed symbolic expressions.
