초록

This essay aims to analyze Everything Everywhere All At Once through the theoretical frames of new materialism and the philosophical understanding of positive nihilism. New materialism has deconstructed the binary division between mind and body, material and soul, proposing a new perspective on the agency of matter. Nietzsche also proposed positive nihilism, recognizing the will to power and its relation to the eternal recurrence. The movie, Everything Everywhere All At Once, directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert and released in 2021, has garnered various awards and acclaim for its poignant and thought-provoking portrayal of the multiverse, embedding serious philosophical and cultural questions regarding the new materialistic understanding of the universe and matter, as well as Asian American heritages. The movie is divided into two narratives: the traditional Chinese American narrative of generational gap and struggle, and the cosmological aspect of the relation between matter and humanity. In the film, Evelyn, a Chinese immigrant, grapples with numerous challenges, including emotional tension with her daughter Joy, who is a lesbian, a midlife crisis triggered by dissatisfaction with her marriage to her husband Waymond, and financial turmoil stemming from an IRA investigation. This essay primarily focuses on the clash between the acceptance of mutual recognition through positive nihilism, represented by the googly eye, versus negative nihilism symbolized by the black bagel.
