초록

함석헌이 자신의 철학이라고 명명한 씨철학에 담겨 있는 전통과 현대를 다루고 있다. 전통과 현대가 양립 불가능하다거나 모순적이라고 단정할 수는 없지만 양자의 조화에 관한 성공적인 모델을 찾는 것은 쉬운 일은아니다.
실천적인 삶 속에서 철학적 개념들에 얽매이지 않고 사상을 삶 그 자체에 필연적인 것으로 결합하는 함석헌의 사유는 체계적이지 않고 쉽게 정형화할 수 있는 어떤 틀도 지니지 않고 있다. 그의 사상에서는 동서양의다양한 사상의 흔적들을 발견할 수 있으나 잡다하지는 않다. 그러나 다양한 사유의 시원들은 함석헌의 사유 안에서 자유롭고 자연스럽게 결합되어있다. 체계적이지도 않고 정형화되지도 않는 사유가 일관성을 유지하는 힘이다.
본 연구는 씨철학에는 존재에 대한 변증법적인 이해를 바탕으로 함석헌 사상 고유의 주체 의식이 녹아 있다는 관점에 기초하고 있다. 고난의주체인 씨들이 역사의 주인이라고 하는 함석헌의 사유에는 씨을 생명과 역사의 주체로 자리매김하게 하는 맥락이 있다. 씨을 생명의 주체로보는 함석헌의 사유 안에는 현대 생명철학의 문제의식 역시 결합되어 있다.
따라서 씨 개념은 근대적 주체의 의미와 더불어 전통적인 공동체적삶의 근거를 내함하고 있다고 할 수 있다. 아울러 씨의 존재 방식은 역사적이면서 우주적이며, 씨은 실존적이면서 형이상학적이다. 씨철학에대한 이러한 이해를 바탕으로 본 연구에서는 함석헌의 철학이 주체와 생명이라고 하는 서로 다른 개념들이 변증법적인 소통을 통해서 조화를 이루고있음을 보여주려고 한다.

영어초록

This paper aims to make clear the meaning of“traditionalism” and “modernism,” the two concepts developedin Ham’s “Ssi-Al” philosophy (the philosophy of Seeds). Thethought of Ham Suk-Hun (1901-1989) cannot be determinatedin a theoretical frame, because, on the one hand, his thoughtis free from philosophical concepts and, the other hand, hisideas are formed in the course of praxis in the real life.
In his thought, we can find the elements of differentthoughts in East and West. These elements are various, butnot confused disorderly. On the contrary, the variety of thesedifferent elements finds their proper places in the thought ofHam Suk-Hun. Moreover, these elements are communicatingeach other in a dialectical way. That is the reason why his thought, even though it is neither systematic nor standardized,has the power of maintaining a internal consistency.
This study claims that the Ssi-Al philosophy is based on thedialectical thought of Ham Suk-Hun on the problem of Being.
According to him, the heroes of history are people who aresubject to every suffering. For him, people are nothing otherthan “ssi-al” (i.e. seeds) disseminated in the land. The aim ofhis thought is to make these “ssi-al” as the master of livesand history. This concept of life has its origin in the ancienteastern thought. Nevertheless, as “ssi-al” are considered as themaster of their lives, this thought shares also the idea of thecontemporary philosophy of life. In addition, this concept of“life” does not rule out the concept of “subject”: the latter isa concept shaped in the course of modernization, while theformer is relatively traditional concept. It is the very dialecticalcommunication of ssi-al philosophy that allows these twoconcepts, in spite of their heterogeneity, to coexist inharmonious way. The purpose of this paper is no other thanto show how these different concepts can be interrelated witheach other by way of the dialectical communication developedby “ssi-al” philosophy.
