초록

This is a research paper about the symbolism of the whale through the representation of the whales appeared in Korean marine ecology poetry.
How much is the existence of the whale recognized to a poet as the weight of as? The various representations of whales that appeared in the text is not a mere slogan that we have to protect the sea creatures going extinct. The poet are singing the lives of human beings and whales through whales. The followings are symbolized through the representation of the whales First, it symbolizes the source of life and death in the unified form of the whales and humans. That is to say, whales to humans are the origin of life. In addition to the biological features that whales and humans are mammals, it means the symbiosis and coexistence of whales and human via the keyword 'life and death'. The recognition that the lives of humans and whales each other mutually recursive structure, revealed its wholeness to the most primitive matter of life and death beyond the anthropocentric logic. In other words, the wholeness of humans and whales enables life sustain, sustainable and lasting beyond mere biological life.
Second, the whale is substituted as waiting, dreams, and longing. The whale is not only the longing about mystique because we often can not see the creatures, but also is sometimes poet's living hope and is symbolized as the longing for the presence of source of 'mother and father'. Also, civilization and anti-civilization reveals more its symbolism through the central axis of the whales. Third, the whales show a fresh vitality to fishermen living on the grounds of sea its existence in itself. Roaring streams whales spouting in the ocean are the energy of life, and a sort of oasis. The dynamic vitality of the whale gives a strong vitality to fishermen at sea, the scene of life.
Currently, the text study on Korean marine ecology poetry is standing at the starting line with the whales. A variety of implied meanings and symbolism on whales will bring the expansion of Korean marine ecology poetry. Also, if the attention is expanded from the whales to a variety of species, the expansion of rich text and research on marine ecology poetry will be accelerated.
