백석 시에 나타난 감각에 관한 연구 - 촉각을 中心으로 (A study on Sense in Baek-Suk's poems - Focusing on tactile sensation)

초록

백석의 시 세계를 촉각 중심으로 연구하는 이유는 백석 시의 미적 자질 분석과 동시에 시 창작방법 탐구라는 이중의 장점을 지닌다. 1930년대 시인들이 시각적 주체의 강화를 통해 시각의 위계화가 강조되는 시 세계를 선보였다면, 백석은 시각적 주체를 약화하고 대신 오감을 활용하는 세련된 감각 운용을 보여주고 있다. 백석 시의 독특한 감각 운용은 시각, 청각, 후각, 미각,촉각 등 오감이 결합․교환으로 감각의 전이와 증폭을 선보인다는 점이다.
이와 같은 감각 운용은 백석 시에서 시각적 주체를 전복하여 평등한 공동체 적 질서를 추구하는 개성적인 시 세계로 나가게 하고 있다.
또한, 백석의 시 세계는 시각이 다양한 감각으로의 전이되는 감각 운용 그리고 시제의 불일치로 주체의 전환이라는 특징을 보인다. 시각과 촉각의 감각 결합을 통해 감각이 증폭되는 동시에, 주어부와 서술어의 시제의 불일치라는 독특한 문장 진술 구조는 감각의 확장을 열어 타자의 주체화라는 특이성을 배태한다. 주체의 전회는 곧 주체와 타자의 경계가 무화되어 보는 주체에서 ‘살’로 감각하는 주체로의 전환에 다름없다. 이때 ‘살’을 통해 감각하는감각 주체는 촉각을 통해 감각하는 주체라 할 수 있다. 즉 백석 시에서 시각이 다른 감각으로 전이되는 과정에서 감각의 결합과 교환은 곧 근원적 감각인 촉각으로 이행하는 독특한 감각 운용이라 할 수 있다.
또한 백석 시의 조사와 구문의 통사적 반복기법과 영상적 요소의 조우는고유감각인 ‘살’을 통해 원초적 세계를 구현하고 있다. 백석은 시에서 음악성으로 대표되는 청각 보다, 시각적 요소인 ‘영상적 요소’가 강조되고 있다. ‘영상적 요소’는 곧 통사구조의 반복적 기법과 밀접한 연관을 지닌다. 조사의 반복 사용이나 구문의 통사적 반복은 사물이나 대상을 병렬적으로 배치하여 개별 대상의 위계를 무화시키고 있다. 시인들이 통사구조의 반복 기법을 통해리듬감과 시의 음악성을 강화했다면, 백석 시에서 통사구조의 반복 기법은리듬감 조성이나 강화보다 반원급법적 시선을 통해 중심을 해체하고 원초적세계를 구현하는 기능으로 작동하고 있다.
이때 기능하는 감각이 바로 촉각이다. 백석 시의 주체와 타자가 만나는 방식은 감각 통합 차원의 촉각을 중심으로 드러나기 때문이다. 촉각은 ‘살(flesh)’ 즉 피부 혹은 몸에 직접 되고 경험으로 기입된 경험적 감각이기 때문이다. 백석은 시에서 다양한 감각의 결합과 전이를 통해 기억을 환기하는 방식을 취하고 있다. 이때 추억의 환기방식은 곧 몸을 통해 촉발되는 감각이다.
백석 시에서 주체와 타자의 경계가 무너지고 수평적 세계가 이루어지는데,이는 바로 백석 시의 감각의 운용 즉 촉각의 운용과 연관이 있다. 시각을 중시하기보다는 촉각을 통해 반원근법적 풍경을 보여준다. 다양한 감각들이 겹쳐지고 연쇄되어 주체와 타자의 합일이 곧 촉각의 감각으로 증폭된다.
이러한 백석 시의 감각운용에서 촉각은 근원감각으로 우리 몸의 피부 혹은 살(flesh)을 통해 환기되는 무의식적이며 무의지적 감각이다. 근원감각인촉각으로의 감각운용은 백석 시에서 주체와 타자의 경계가 무화하여, 원초적인 감각 세계를 개진하고 있다. 즉 백석 시에서 촉각을 중심으로 한 연구는백석 시가 지니는 미적 자질은 물론 시의 에너지와 창작방식 기법을 추출할수 있는 의의를 함의한다.
이와 같이 백석 시에서 시각이 시각의 청각화, 시각의 촉각화, 청각의 후각화 등 감각의 결합과 교환으로 이루어지는 감각의 전이는 시제의 불일치,통사구조 반복 기법과 어우러져 주체와 타자가 한몸이 되는 ‘현상적 장’인“살(flesh)”로 구현되는 원초적인 시 세계를 보여주고 있다.

영어초록

The study focusing on tactile sensation in Baek-Suk’s poems has the dualadvantage of analyzing aesthetic qualities and exploring how to writepoems. While the poets in the 1930s showed the poetic world emphasizingthe hierarchy of sight by strengthening the subjects of sight, Baek-Sukweakened it and showed the fine operation of senses using five senses. Theunique sense operation of Baek-Suk’s poems shows the transition andamplification of senses by the combination and exchange of five senses, i.e.
sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch. This operation of senses makesBaek-Suk go forward toward an individual poetic world pursuing the equalcommunity order by overturning the subjects of sight.
Baek-Suk’s poetic world was characterized by both the use of sensesshifting from sight to various senses and the conversion of subjects resultingfrom inconsistent tenses. Senses were amplified through the combination ofsight and touch, and the unique sentence description structure of inconsistenttenses in subject and predicate parts gives birth to the peculiarity of making‘others’ a subject by expanding senses. The conversion of subjects is theswitch from a visual subject to a flesh-sensing one through the blurredboundary between a subject and others. The flesh-sensing subject can besaid the one sensed by touch. In the process of shifting from sight to other senses, the combination and exchange of senses can be said the uniquesense operation shifting to fundamental touch.
And the primitive world is realized through proprioception, ‘flesh’, by theencounter of a syntactical repetition technique and an iconic factor of apostposition and sentence in Baek-Suk’s poems. They emphasize a visualfactor, i.e. iconic factor, more than hearing represented by musicality. The‘iconic factor’ is closely associated with the syntactical repetition technique.
The repetitive use of a postposition or syntactical repetition of the sentenceblurs the hierarchy of an individual object by arranging things or objects inparallel. While the poets strengthened the musicality of poems through thesyntactical repetition technique, it operates as a function of dismantling thecenter and realizing the primitive world through anti-perspective attentionrather than promoting or strengthening rhythmic sense.
The tactile sensation functions at this moment. It is because the way ofmeeting between the subject and others is revealed focusing on tactilesensation in the dimension of integrated senses. The tactile sensation is anexperienced sensation recorded on ‘flesh’, i.e. skin or body. Baek-Suk’spoems select the way of awakening memories by combining and shiftingvarious senses. The way of recalling memories is a sense triggered by thebody. In Baek-Suk’s poems, the boundary of a subject and others is blurredand the horizontal world is formed. This is associated with the operation oftactile sensation. The anti-perspective landscape is shown through tactilesensation rather than emphasizing sight. The oneness of the subject andothers is amplified into tactile sensation by various overlapped, chainedsenses.
In Baek-Suk’s poems, touch functions as a basic sense, which isunconscious and involuntary one recalled by the skin or flesh of the body.
The operation of touch as a basic sense blurs the boundary of a subject andothers, and expresses the primitive world of senses. In other words, thestudy focusing on tactile sensation in Baek-Suk’s poems implies to extract aesthetic qualities, poetic energy and writing technique.
In Baek-Suk’s poems, senses shift from sight to hearing, from sight totouch, and from hearing to touch, by the combination and exchange ofsenses in harmony with inconsistent tenses and syntactical repetitiontechnique. It is shown that the primitive poetic world is realized by aphenomenal field, ‘flesh’, in which a subject and others are combined.
