초록

일제강점기 전남 담양 지역 鞠씨는 향리적 기반을 가진 대표적인 지역세력이었다. 국씨는 14세기부터 담양에 세거했고, 18~19세기 이족가문으로서 정상의 위치를 확보한 가문이었다. 일제강점기 국씨는 관권과 결합하며경제력을 크게 신장시켰다. 가장 유력한 계파는 국채웅계였고, 국정완계가다음이었다. 대체적으로 전통적인 지주경영에 주력했다. 관·공직에도 활발하게 진출했다. 역시 유사한 가문 기반을 가졌던 지주층들과 교유망을 구축했다. 1930년대 교육기관 설립에도 참여했고, 일부는 사회운동에도 관여했으나 제한적이었다. 국씨는 지역에서의 정치적, 경제적, 사회적 자원들을확보하고 유지하고자 하는, 이를 테면‘有志집단의 維持’에 중점을 두었다.
향리가문의 일제강점기 변화과정을 확인할 수 있는 사례이다.

영어초록

The Guk families in Damyang region of Jeonnam have settled down for generation since the 14th century. The families were left out of a noble family in the 17th century, and began to debouch into a local service. According to this, the families were brought up to the best petty official(hyangri) family in Damyang region from the middle of the 18th century.
In the Japanese colonial period, the families largely extended its economic power. There were two main branches; one was leaded by Guk, Chae-woong, and the other was leaded by Guk, Jeong-wan.
Mr. Guk, Chae-woong accumulated a wealth by a commercial business combined with the early government authority. At the time of 1910, his wealth came up to the level of‘ Chun-seok-gun’(千石君).
Since then, he accumulated a land by a holding management, a lowinterest lending fund, and so on. Mr. Guk, Jeong-wan amassed a wealth by using a financial duty of Damyang-bu. Other branches were leaded by Guk, Un-jin, Guk, Kyoung-hyun, and Guk, Donghyup.
The activities of these branches were brilliant.
The Guk families in Damyang were rapidly brought up as regional leaders based on their strong economic power, and then developed their maintenance activities. First of all, they entered into the government service and the public duty. Those services and duties were not a high position, the families could secure their positions in a low-rank official, so-called Myon-jang(面長), a member of Jeonnam Province Council, a member of Financial Association, and so on.
There were many social intercourses.
The Guk families participated in making the private schools in 1930s. Guk, Chae-woong built Damyang Kindergarten in 1932, and Farm Middle Lady Training School in 1937. He wanted to enhance his social position as an interested person(yooji) by making schools.
After 3·1 movement, the activity of young people’s group started in Damyang area. The young people’s group was the same to the foundation of the social movement force in Damyang area from 1920s to 1940s. In the early age of its establishment, Guk, ki-yeol, Guk, Chae-woong, and Guk, Un-jin participated in the group. Guk, Chaewoong, however, got away from the group’s activity because of the contribution that was needed to found a Junior Chamber. He had made a promise to contribute, but didn’t do that. Accordingly, the Guk families centering around Guk, Chae-woong were opposed to the young social movement force. On the other hand, Guk, Ki-yeol made a relationship with the young social movement force, and exercised his influence.
