대학 글쓰기 교육에서의 평전 쓰기 운영 사례 (A case study on a college writing course:  A critical biography)

초록

이 논문은 평전 쓰기를 대학 글쓰기 교과와 연계해보고 실제 수업 사례를 분 석한 글이다. 단계적 글쓰기 수업 과정과 수업의 결과물을 통해 평전의 교육적 의의를 논의해 보고자 한다. 부모님 평전을 작성하는 과정에서 학생들은 부모의 삶에 관심이 적었던 자 신을 스스로 반성하기도 하며 부모의 생애에 공감하고, 일상의 소소함에서 가 족의 특별함을 발견한다. 대학 입시 과정에서 그동안 부모와 자녀 간 질 높은 대화가 이루어지기 어려웠던 1학년 학생들에게 의미 있고 새로운 성찰 과정을 제공할 수 있었다. ‘공감과 소통 공모전’에 참여해야 하는 <창의적 사고와 글쓰기> 1학년 수강 생들을 대상으로 수업을 진행하였으며 지정 교재에 평전 쓰기 관련 내용이 다 루어지지 않고 있으므로 구체적인 강의안을 제시하였다. 먼저 기초 작업으로 연표 작성 실습 활동을 진행했다. 학생들은 질문지를 토대로 부모님을 인터뷰하며 부모님과 대화하는 시간을 가졌고, 한 사람의 삶을 관찰하는 진지한 태도를 보였다. 또한 평전 쓰기의 의미화와 원활한 글쓰기 작 성에 도움을 주기 위해 수강생들의 글을 합평하는 시간을 가졌다. 글쓰기 주체 가 동시에 글 읽기 주체가 되어 타인의 글을 공감하고, 아쉬운 점을 논의하는 과정은 수업 집중도를 높이는 동시에 학생들의 정서적 환기를 이루는 효과를 얻었다. 제출된 초고는 교수자와의 1:1 대면 피드백을 통해 고쳐 쓰기 과정을 거쳤다. 이러한 활동들을 단계적으로 수행하며 학생들은 완성도 높은 평전을 작성하 는 성과를 거둔다. 부모님의 삶을 토대로, 자기 생각을 구체적으로 서술한 그 고백들을 읽는 것은 감동적인 경험이었다. 기술적인 작문 실력 향상을 넘어 진 심으로 부모를 알고, 관계를 치유하는 글쓰기 활동은 학생들이 자신의 세계와 삶을 깨닫고 온전한 삶의 주인공으로 살아가는 계기가 될 것이다.

영어초록

This study analyzes an assignment for a college writing course on writing a critical biography. The process of writing a critical biography of their parents resulted in students regretting the fact that they have had little interest in their parents’ lives, empathizing with the way their parents had lived their lives, and finding the special value of family. For the freshmen who did not have the time to maintain strong communication channels with their parents due to their preparation for college entrance exams, this assignment provided an opportunity for meaningful reflection. The subjects of the study were students enrolled in the “Creative Thinking and Writing” course, who were obliged to participate in the “Writing of Empathy and Communication” contest. A lecture on critical biography had to be added, since it was not included in the regular curriculum. First, an activity, in which students drafted their parents’ chronology table, was conducted. Next, the students interviewed their parents; they were encouraged to make enough time to engage in conversation and to observe someone else’s life with a careful attitude. A collective assessment was also conducted by evaluating the papers written by other students to better understand the semantics of the writing assignment. The writing topic was simultaneously the reading topic; therefore, it paved the road for the students to better empathize with the content and analyze it by discussing the downsides, This discussion prompted students to concentrate better, which proved to be very effective in the letter and in creating an emotionally embedded ambience. The assignment had to be rewritten many times, after initial drafts were discussed through one-on-one assessments with the instructors. By completing these activities, the students were able to create a high-quality, critical biography of their parents. It was a truly touching experience to read the confessions which have been written based on the parents’ lives. Apart from the obvious improvements in students’ writing skills, the best part of the assignment was probably the understanding toward their parents that the students developed, how they learned previously unknown facts about their parents,, and how these things potentially healed connections. This writing activity gave students the chance to come to terms with their own lives and be able to solely and genuinely live their lives as the only protagonist.
