본 연구의 주요 텍스트는 15~16C에 티벳 제쭌 최끼곌첸이 십이연기에 관하여 자립논증파의 견해로써 저술한 『연기의 총의』이다. 본 연구는 이 논서에서 십이연기 각지의 해석을 제시하고, 십이연기에 관한 연구의 지평을 넓히는 데 목적이 있다.
본 연구는 십이연기 각지에 대한 해석을 중심으로 모두 세 단락으로 구성한다. 단락별 개요는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 십이연기와 연기를 혼용하는 사례에 대하여 월칭(月稱)의 『중관근본송주석, 현구(中觀根本頌註釋, 顯句)』 등의 전거를 들어 반론을 제기한다. 둘째, 『반야(般若)의 총의』가 자립논증파에 속하는 성해탈군(聖解脫軍)과 사자현(獅子現)의 논서를 중심으로 저술하였다는 전거를 토대로, 『연기의 총의』가 자립논증파의 견해임을 논증한다. 셋째, 『연기의 총의』를 통해 십이연기 각지에 대한 해석을 제시함과 동시에 내용 이해를 돕기 위해 여러 논서를 참고하여 부연 설명을 덧붙인다. 또한 자립논증파와 귀류논증파는 십이연기 일부 해석에 대해 다소 이견을 보인다. 따라서 용수(龍樹)의 『중관근본송반야(中觀根本頌般若)』에 대한 여러 주석서의 전거를 바탕으로 이를 비교․분석한다.
십이연기는 불교의 핵심적 교리이다. 하지만 이 전체 내용을 명확히 이해하는 것은 다른 어떤 교리보다 어렵다. 따라서 다양한 문헌을 탐구하여 의문을 풀어 가는 것이 시급한 과제이다. 본 연구가 이에 일조를 할 수 있기를 기대한다.

영어초록

The main source of this study is the General Meaning of Dependent Origination(緣起의 總義, rten 'brel spyi don/), which is written by rje btsun chos kyi rgyal mtshan of Tibet in the 15th and 16th centuries as a view of the Middle Way Autonomy school(Svātantrika, rang rgyud pa) on the twelve links of dependent origination. The purpose of this study is to present an interpretation of each link of the twelve links of dependent origination based on the text and to broaden the horizons of research on the twelve links.
This study consists of three parts that provide an interpretation of each link of the twelve links. The outline of each paragraph is as follows.
First, this paper raises a counterargument to the case of using the twelve links of dependent origination and the dependent origination(pratītyasamutpāda) interchangeably by citing evidence such as Clear word Commentary on the Fundamental Verses of the Middle Way(中觀根本頌註釋 顯句, dbu ma rtsa ba'i 'grel pa tshig gsal/) written by Candrakīrti(zla ba grags pa/). Second, it demonstrates that the General Meaning of Dependent Origination is the view of the Middle Way Autonomy school based on the evidence that the General Meaning of Prajñā(般若의 總義, phar phyin spyi don/) was written mainly on Araya Vimuktisena('phags pa rnam grol sde/) and Haribhadra(seng ge bzang po/)’s treatises that belongs to the Autonomy school. Third, it presents the interpretation of each link of the Twelve links through the General Meaning of Dependent Origination and at the same time additional explanations are added by referring to various treatises to help understand the contents. Also the Middle Way Autonomy school and the Middle Way Consequence school(Prāsaṅgika, thal 'gyur ba) have somewhat different opinions regarding some of the interpretation of the each link. Therefore, it compares and analyzes them based on the authority of various commentaries on Nāgārjuna(klu sgrub/)’s Root Verses on the Middle Way(中觀根本頌般若, dbu ma rtsa ba'i tshig le 'ur byas pa shes rab/).
The twelve links of dependent origination is a core doctrine of Buddhism. However, it is more difficult to clearly understand the entire content than any other doctrine. Therefore, it is an urgent priority to resolve the question by exploring diverse literature. This study may contribute to this.
