초록

이 글에서는 1796년 冬至副使 李亨元이 義州府尹 沈晉賢에게 보낸 諺簡을 소개하고 그 의의를 여러 측면에서 검토, 음미하였다. 이 언간은 장서각에 소장된 『太上皇傳位文蹟』 (K2-3521)에 실려 전하는 것으로 비록 謄本이기는 하나 언간의 授受 사실과 주요 내용이 조선왕조실록과 승정원일기에도 등장하여 자료적 가치가 높은 것이다. 이 글에서는 언간의 원문을 판독하여 소개하는 한편 내용을 주변 자료와 비교 분석함으로써 이 언간이 지니는 의의를 다음과 같이 파악하였다.
첫째, 이 언간은 사대부 남성 간에 오간 편지라는 점에서 조선시대 언간의 실용 범위상 예외적 사례에 해당한다. 조선시대에는 언간의 발신자나 수신자 어느 한쪽으로 반드시 여성이 관여하는 특징이 있지만 이 언간은 그러한 특징에서 벗어나 있다.
둘째, 사대부 남성 간에 (한문 간찰 대신) 언간이 사용된 것은 韓中 관계에서 대외 기밀을 유지하는 데 諺文이 유용했기 때문으로 드러난다. 언간 내용에 따르면 편지가 도중에 없어질 것을 염려하여 굳이 언문으로 썼으며 언문으로 된 편지를 받는 즉시 내용을 한문으로 번역하여 조정에 전달할 것을 당부하고 있다.
셋째, 이 언간은 실제로 조정에 보고되는 과정에서 한문으로 ‘翻謄’되었고, 그 번등된 존재를 『日省錄』에서 구체적으로 확인할 수 있다. 일반적으로 “번역하여 베낌”을 의미하는 ‘翻謄’은 한문을 언문으로 번역하는 ‘眞→諺’ 翻謄의 경우가 대부분이지만 이 언간은 그와 반대 방향의 번등이 이루어진 것을 보여 준다.
이밖에도 이 언간에는 편지를 언문으로 작성하여 朝廷에 보고하기까지 일체의 轉達 過程이 상세하게 드러나 있다. 언간을 (의주 장사치) 개인 편지로 위장하여 전달하고 이를 받아 다시 漢文으로 翻謄하여 조정에 보고하는 과정이 특히 주목된다.
이 글을 통해 (외교 관계상) 대외 기밀을 유지할 목적으로 ‘諺簡’ 내지 ‘諺文’이 실용된 사실은 거의 실물 차원에서 實證되었다 해도 과언이 아니다. 이는 諺文이 실용된 범위를 새롭게 인식하는 동시에 諺文과 漢文 사이의 翻謄 관계에 대해서도 다시금 돌아보는 계기를 제공할 것이다.

영어초록

This article introduces a vernacular letter(諺簡) written by the vice-envoy of the winter solstice embassy(冬至副使), Hyeong-Won Lee(李亨元) to the Deputy Mayor of Uiju(義州副尹), Sim Jin-hyeon(沈晉賢) in 1796. Furthermore, this article aims to examine the historical significance of the letter in several ways. This letter is in the book, or Taesanghwang jeonwi munjeok(『太上皇傳位文蹟』), which is held in Jangseogak(藏書閣) of the Academy of Korean Studies. Although it is a copy of the original letter. the historical facts surrounding it are also listed in the Annals of Joseon Dynasty(『朝鮮王朝實錄』) and the Records of Daily Reflection(『日省錄』), which are of high material value. In this article, we read and introduce the vernacular letter, and compare its content with the surrounding historical data to find out the significance of the letter as follows.
First, this is an exceptional case during the Joseon Dynasty in that it is a letter between high-ranking male officials. In the Joseon Dynasty, there was a characteristic that woman must be involved as either the sender or receiver of the vernacular letter.
Second, the vernacular letter was used instead of Chinese letter because it was useful in keeping diplomatic secrecy between Joseon and Qing China. According to the content of the letter, the sender wrote a letter in vernacular script(諺文), fearing that the letter would disappear in the middle, and urged the receiver to translate the letter into Chinese script as soon as receiving it.
Third, this letter was translated into Chinese script in the process of reporting to the court, and its existence can be confirmed in the Records of Daily Reflection(『日省錄』) in detail. Although it is common to translate Chinese into Korean, this letter has an unique characteristics by translating in the opposite direction.
In addition, the letter reveals all the details until it was written and reported to the court. In this process, it is especially noteworthy that the sender entrusted his vernacular letter to the merchant, disguising it as his personal letter, or the recipient translated it back into Chinese script and reported it to the court.
It is no exaggeration to say that the use of vernacular letter(諺簡) or vernacular script(諺文) for the purpose of keeping diplomatic secrecy through this article is almost attested. This will provide a chance to reexamine the interrelation between vernacular script(諺文) and Chinese script(漢文) while recognizing the new range of use in relation to vernacular script.
