유학의 감정이해- 退溪의 「心統性情圖」와 『樂記』를 중심으로 (A Study on Confucian Understanding about Emotion - Centering on Toegye’s “Simtongseongjeongdo”(Diagram of the Heart-Mind Connecting Nature and Emotion) and “Akgi”)

초록

인간은 四端의 감정을 통해 보편적 사랑을 알기도 하지만, 七情을 통해 인간으 로서 권리와 자유의 필요성을 깨닫기도 한다. 감정은 이와 같이 도덕적 행위를 이끌어내는 마음의 작용이기도 하지만 과잉된 감정으로 사회적 법칙뿐만 아니라 자신 또한 해칠 수도 있다. 유학자들은 일찍이 이를 간파하고 파괴력을 가장 크게 행사할 수 있는 통치자에게 먼저 마음의 수양을 권했다. 감정의 이해를 통해서 자신을 다스릴 수 있다고 본 것이다.
이 글은 감정을 덕성 수양적 관점으로 논의하고자 한다. 감정 사유를 통해 기 질을 자각하며 본심을 찾아가는 과정을 담고자 한다. 본문에서는 크게 퇴계의 『聖學十圖』 중 六圖인 「心統性情圖」에서 나타나는 감정의 역할과 『樂記』의 감정 인식구조를 살펴보도록 한다.
먼저 퇴계의 「심통성정도」에서 下圖의 중요점은 본성에 개인의 기질이 섞여 혼잡해지는 마음의 구조를 현실적으로 담아내고 있다는데 있다. 이것은 중도에서 감정 자체는 본성의 발현된 표현일 뿐 善性이라는 것을 일컫지만, 하도를 통해 인간은 늘 사회에서 욕망과 개인의 기질로 갈등된 구조를 살아가는 것을 증명하고 있기 때문이다.
두 번째로 『악기』에서 나타나는 감정의 인식구조이다. 『악기』에서는 일찍이 감정 의 조화에 대해 논했다. 감정이 고립되면 인간의 마음을 상하게 할 수 있다는 것을 간파하며 음률의 조화인 악樂을 말했다. 감정의 조화란 하나의 감정에 항상성이 없으며 삶의 다양한 정서가 있다는 것을 느낄 때 감정이 변화한다는 것을 말한다. 『악기』에서 나타나는 감정의 조화성은 인간의 슬픔, 고통으로 나타나는 불안, 쇠약함, 우울감에서 삶의 깊숙한 즐거움도 함께 보며 본심을 찾아가는 다양성에 대한 이해로서 수양을 뜻한다. 따라서 본심은 기질이나, 타자의 반응에 의해 일어난 고립된 감정에서 자기 자신의 본연지성을 되찾는 일이다. 그것은 또한 자기의 심층적 이해이기도 하다.

영어초록

Human beings come to understand universal love through the Four Fonts of virtue (benevolence, righteousness, politeness and wisdom), but they can also realize the necessity of human rights and freedom through the Seven Emotions (happiness, anger, sorrow, fear, love, evil and desire). Emotions can be the workings of the human mind that elicits moral acts, but excessive emotions can result in violation of social rules hurting oneself. Noticing it earlier, Confucian scholars advised rulers who were capable of exercising the greatest destructive power to cultivate their mind. They thought that one could control his or herself by understanding emotions.
The study aims to discuss emotions from the perspectives of cultivating moral character. It is focused on realizing disposition and coming to one’s senses through meditation on emotion. It also examined the roles of emotions mentioned in Simtongseongjeongdo (Diagram of the Heart-Mind Connecting Nature and Emotion), the sixth diagram of Toegye’s Seonghaksipdo (Ten Diagrams on Sage Learning), as well as a structure of emotional recognition.
First of all, the importance of Hado in Toegye’s Simtongseongjeongdo realistically portrays a structure of mind where confusion is generated as personal temperament is mixed with human nature. It is due to the fact that Jungdo views emotion itself as expression of human nature that is good nature but that it is proved through Hado that human beings always live in a conflicting structure that involves desire and personal temperament in the society.
Second, a structure of emotional recognition mentioning in Akgi is examined. Akgi elaborated on emotional harmony. It recognized that isolated emotions can hurt human mind mentioning Ak, the melodic harmony. Emotional harmony means that feelings change when emotions do not have constancy and there exist diversified sentiment in life. Emotional harmony mentioned in Akgi means cultivating characters in terms of understanding about diversity where human nature is sought through a great pleasure in life in connection to anxiety, weakness and depression that are expressed as grief and pain. Accordingly, human nature is to restore one’s originality in isolated feelings generated by disposition or others’ response.
