천태지관(天台止觀)을 통한 심리치료법의 고찰 (A Consideration of Psychotherapy with T’ien-taichih-kuan)

초록

많은 현대인들은 각종 정신질환에 시달리고 있고 욕심과 분노와 무지와 악업과 각종 스트레스 등에 고통 받고 있다.
천태의 지의는 당시 많은 정신적 병들이 발생하는 원인을 번뇌 등에서 찾았다. 그리고 주요 전적에서 그 원인과 치료법들을 밝혀놓고 있다.
먼저 『차제선문』에서는 번뇌의 습인으로, 오종의 불선법을 언급하고 그 치료법 등을 다양하게 서술하고 있다. 즉 각관(覺觀)은 호흡법으로, 아울러 6식과 12식을 참고로 제시해 보았다. 탐욕은 부정관과 구상관, 성냄은 자심관, 어리석음은 12연기, 악업의 병은 염불로 치료하고 있다. 이러한 방법으로 불안, 공황발작, 우울, 근육 긴장, 두통, 피로감, 심장질환, 조증과 관상성 심장병 등을 해소하는데 효과가 있음을 알 수 있다.
또한 『마하지관』에서는 번뇌의 원인으로 습인의 종자, 업력의 작용, 마의 선동으로 보고 있다. 습인과 업력의 작용은 『차제선문』에서 언급하고 있기 때문에 귀신과 마의 선동을 살펴보았다. 특히 현대의학에서 보면, 귀신은 우리의 몸에 저항력이 떨어졌을 때 들어오는 감염증으로 세균 등의 병을 말하기도 하고,정신병적인 부분도 있다고 본다. 이러한 병을 이완반응의 효력이 있다고 해서단순히 주문 등으로 치료하는 것보다도 동시에 약 등을 복용하면 큰 효과를 볼수 있을 것으로 생각된다.
마는 추척귀, 시미귀, 마라귀로 분류하고 있다. 추척귀는 물리적, 화학적, 생물학적인 스트레스의 작용을 귀신이 기어 다니거나 붙는 것으로 설명하고 있다. 대처법으로 강한 의지력과 계율을 지키면서 공황장애나 현실격리의 병증이일어나는 것을 치유하고 있다. 시미귀는 인간생명활동에서 신체의 감성과 지성등에 주기적으로 나타나는 일정한 바이오리듬의 파괴를 귀신의 모습으로 표현한 것이다. 또한 12시간의 리듬과 또는 생체리듬의 혼란이 호르몬 계통의 혼미를 초래하고 결국에는 악성 종양의 발생으로 이어지고 극단적으로 우울증이 발생한다. 이에 대한 대처법은 그 시간대의 시미귀가 오는 것을 확인하고 시미귀의 이름을 부르는 것인데 이로 인해 생체리듬에 이상이 있음을 알고 원상으로회복하게 된다. 마라귀는 강한 스트레스를 의미하고 호르몬 계통 등에 이상이오게 한다. 이러한 마라귀의 대처법은 마가 본래 공하여 존재하지 않는다고 하는 공관(空觀)을 행하고 궁극적으로 마의 경계와 부처의 경계가 둘이 아니라는진리를 파악하는 것이다.
이렇게 천태의 수행으로 번뇌를 제어하게 되면 현대인들이 가질 수 있는 각종 정신질환 등을 치료할 수 있을 것으로 생각된다. 이러한 방법은 MBSR과MBCT, DBT와 ACT등과 결코 다르지 않는 심리치료법이 된다고 생각된다.

영어초록

Nowadays, many people are suffering from a variety of stresses, greed,anger, ignorance and suppression, with lots of mental disorders.
In the T'ien-tai Sect, they found causes leading to many mental disorders atthe time in defilements etc, so called Klesa.
At first, in Ci-di-chan-men(次第禪門), it shows the cause of defilement andtherapies in diversity. That is, vitarka(覺觀), can be a treatment with how tobreath. Greed can be curable through seeing impurity, meditation ofcompassion for anger, consideration of all the karmas for ignorance, Buddhistprayer for bad habits. With those ways, we can know that it is so effective tosolve the problems of instability, uneasy disability, depression, muscle stress,headache, grinch, and heart disease etc.
And also in the Mo-ho chih-kuan(摩訶止觀), it sees the seed of the cause ofhabits, the work of the habit power, and the instigation of devils, as the causeof defilements. As the work of the cause of habits, and the habit power wasalready mentioned in Ci-di-chan-men(次第禪門), so I looked into the instigationof ghosts and devils. Especially, from the point of modern medical scienceview, ghosts usually come into our bodies as infectious diseases whenresistance falls down, it's sometimes mentioned as, so called bacteria, and alsoas the part of mental illness. For such diseases, I think that it can bring a bigeffect taking some doses simultaneously rather than only reciting mantras,even though it’s also good for the illnesses.
Devils can be divided into Chucheok, Simi, and Mara. The Chucheok isconsidered as a ghost crawling or clinging to human bodies for the work ofphysical, chemical, and biological stresses. For the cope, strong will powerand strict religious precepts can cure diseases of the uneasy disability or theisolation from the reality. The Simi is expressed as a figure of ghost for thedestruction of certain biorhythm which is shown periodically to the sensitivityand intelligence of human bodies in the activities of human lives.
And also the crisis of 12 hours rhythm or body rhythm brings about thestupor of hormone systems and, in the end, it comes to the generation ofbenign tumor, and causes a depression into excess. For the cope of such adisease, it is to confirm the Simi which comes in at the certain time, and callits name by checking the disorder in the body rhythm, then the person recovershis health again. The Mara means a strong stress, and it brings a disorder inthe hormone system. For the cope against the Mara, we should implementpractice which tells that the devils are originally not exist because they arevacant, ultimately, to understand the truth that the border between Buddha andDevil is not two.
As removing the defilements with the T'ien-tai practice, I believe that wecan cure various mental disorders that contemporary people have. For thosemethods, I think it is not totally different from MBSR, MBCT, DBT and ACTetc as a psychotherapy.
