심청의 역사(1) - 원홍장은 심청의 원형인가? (History of Simcheong (1) - Is Wonhongjang the Prototype of Simcheong?)

초록

이 논문은 심청의 역사를 기술하고자 한다. 심청전의 이본군과 이본사에 대한연구가 누적되면서 심청전이 역사성을 띤다는 것이 분명해졌다. 그러나 심청에대한 이해는 충분하지 못해서 심청전의 역사에서 심청이 일관된 형상으로 존재하여 동일성이 유지되었다는 오해가 있다. 이에 이 연구에서는 문학적 체험의대상으로서 심청의 역사를 기술하고자 한다.
그러나 심청전 이본군이 방대하고 이본사가 간단하지 않아서, 심청의 역사는단편으로 기술되기 어렵다. 이에 여기서는 우선 두 가지 내용을 다루었다. 첫째, 심청전에서 심청의 위상을 분석하였다. 둘째, 심청전의 근원설화로 간주되는원홍장 이야기에 등장하는 원홍장이 심청의 원형으로 인정될 수 있는지 검토하였다.
심청전에서 심청의 위상을 판단하기 위해, 먼저 도덕적 딜레마를 검토하였다.
이효상효(以孝傷孝)의 도덕적 딜레마는 심청전 작품에서 자기 동일성의 근거로이해되었기 때문이다. 도덕적 딜레마는 심청전이라는 작품의 형성과 수용에서일부일 뿐이다. 즉 도덕적 딜레마는 서사 전개에서 작품 전체를 포괄하지 못한다.
가령 개안에 대한 의심, 죽음에 대한 두려움, 심봉사의 일탈 등은 이본사에서중요한 내용이지만 도덕적 딜레마와는 무관하다. 또 도덕적 딜레마는 심청에대한 문학적 체험을 윤리적 범주로 축소한다. 마지막으로 도덕적 딜레마는 심청의 처지에서 환기되는 비극적 세계 인식을 설명하는 데에 한계가 있다.
이제 심청의 역사를 기술하는 양식을 마련하기 위해 심청전에서 심청의 위상을 검토하였다. 심청전은 방대한 이본군을 형성하지만, 서사 전개의 중추는심청의 서사로 구성된다. 이때 심청의 이야기는 문학적 체험을 이루는 근원적질문에 대해 네 가지 개념들의 관계로 구성되어 있다. 즉 심청의 정체, 희생, 보상, 효과이다. 여기서 심청의 정체는 희생과 보상 그리고 효과를 위한 대전제로서 기능한다. 심청의 희생은 대전제로서의 인간성이 어떤 조건에서 발현되는가를 보여준다. 희생의 논리는 인간성과 세계의 관계를 드러낸다. 심청에 대한보상은 희생에 대한 세계의 평가를 보여준다. 즉 희생과 세계의 관계를 드러낸다.
희생에 따른 효과는 희생의 목적이 어떤 조건에서 완성될 수 있는지 보여준다.
즉 희생의 목적과 세계의 관계를 드러낸다.
그렇다면 심청의 역사를 기술하는 양식으로써 원홍장을 검토하면 어떠한가.
원홍장 이야기는 맹인 아버지를 위해 딸이 스스로를 희생하여 딸은 황후가되고 아비도 눈을 뜬다는 거시적인 사건 전개는 심청전과 비슷하게 보인다.
정체, 희생, 보상 그리고 효과를 중심으로 여주인공의 서사를 살펴보면 원홍장이야기는 효행담처럼 보이지만, 그 문학적 체험은 내면의 불성을 신뢰하고 신심에 대한 시험에 응했을 때에 새로운 존재로 거듭날 수 있다는 종교적 각성에있다. 결국 원홍장 이야기는 딸의 희생을 다룬다는 점에서 효행담처럼 보이지만실은 신의 섭리에 대한 인간의 믿음을 시험하고 보상하는 종교담이다.

영어초록

This article aimed to describe the history of Simcheong. As research on the different editions of Simcheongjeon accumulated, it became clear that Simcheongjeon had a historicity. However, there is a misunderstanding that Simcheong existed in a consistent shape in the history of Simcheongjeon, and this identity was maintained because the understanding of Simcheong was insufficient. Therefore, this study intends to describe the history of Simcheong as an object of literary experience.
However, the history of Simcheong is difficult to describe briefly, as the different editions of Simcheongjeon are numerous and their history is not simple. Thus, in this article, I first dealt with two issues. First, I analyzed the status of Simcheong in the Simcheongjeon.
Second, I examined whether Wonhongjang can be recognized as the prototype of Simcheong. This is because the story of Wonhongjang is regarded as the origin story of Simcheongjeon.
To judge the status of Simcheong in Simcheongjeon, I first examined the moral dilemma. This is because the moral dilemma was understood as the basis for self-identity in Simcheongjeon. The moral dilemma is only a part of the formation and acceptance of the work of Simcheongjeon. In other words, the moral dilemma does not cover the entirety of the work in narrative development. For example, doubts about open eyes, fear of death, and the father's deviance are important topics in the history of Simcheongjeon, but they are unrelated to the moral dilemma.
Moreover, the moral dilemma reduces the literary experience of Simcheong to an ethical category. Finally, the moral dilemma has limitations in explaining the tragic world perception evoked in Simcheong's situation.
Now, to prepare a form to describe the history of Simcheong, I reviewed the status of Simcheong in Simcheongjeon. Simcheongjeon forms a vast group of different editions, but the backbone of the narrative development is composed of Simcheong's narrative. At this time, Simcheong's story is composed of the relationship of four concepts to the fundamental questions that make up the literary experience. That is, Simcheong's identity, sacrifice, reward, and effect. Here, Simcheong's identity functions as a premise for sacrifice, compensation, and effect.
Simcheong's sacrifice shows under which conditions humanity is expressed as a major premise. The logic of sacrifice reveals the relationship between humanity and the world. The reward for Simcheong shows the world's evaluation of the sacrifice. In other words, it reveals the relationship between sacrifice and the world. The effect of sacrifice shows under which conditions the purpose of sacrifice can be fulfilled. In other words, it reveals the purpose of sacrifice and the relationship of the world.
Then, let us examine Wonhongjang as a form of describing the history of Simcheong. The story of Wonhongjang is similar to Simcheongjeon in that the daughter sacrifices herself for her blind father and becomes the empress, and the father also opens his eyes. Examining the heroine's narrative focusing on identity, sacrifice, reward, and effect, the story of Wonhongjang appears to be a story of filial piety. However, the literary experience lies in the religious awakening that one can be reborn as a new being when one trusts one’s inner Buddha-nature and meets the test of one’s piety. Ultimately, the story of Wonhongjang resembles a story of filial piety in that it deals with the sacrifice of a daughter, but it is actually a religious story that tests and rewards human belief in God's providence.
