‘심율(心律)’로서 동정(同情)공동체와 ‘국민주의’ (Sympathy Community as ‘Mind Precepts’ and ‘Nationalism’)

초록

본 글에서는 근대 일본의 ‘국민주의’를 만든 감정적 기원으로서 동정 개념에 대해 살펴보고, 감정의 정치화(定置化)라는 의미에서 ‘마음의 규율=심율’(마음<心>+법칙<律>)화로 설명하고자 했다. 특히 당시 서구의 유행담론 중 하나였던 동정의 의미들과 그것을 메이지기일본에서 수용하는 과정에서 형성한 ‘스노비시(snobbish, 우월성)’로서 동정공동체라는 점을 밝히고자 했다. 즉 일본에서는 인간의 자율적 감성의 하나인 동정개념을 자아와 타자의문턱을 넘고 가족공동체와 천황제 국가주의로 변용해 가는 프로세스 속에서 어떤 억압이작동하는지를 규명하고자 했다. 이는 역설적으로 일본의 가족공동체 논리가 국민의 감정을지배한 개념으로서 동정이 동원되었다는 점을 보여주는 것이었다. 동정의 확장개념으로 만들어진 동정공동체는 결국 천황의 일시동인(一視同仁)이라는 절대공동체로 치환되어 국민의감정을 포섭하여 억압의 기제로 사용되었음이 드러났다. 본고에서는 이를 규명하기 위해 첫째, 일본이 서구로부터 동정개념을 수용할 때 중시된 쇼펜하우어와 니체의 동정논리를 살펴보았다. 당시 서구에서 파퓰러 메모리였던 동정개념을 둘러싸고 ‘타자의 이해 가능성/불가능성’에 대한 논쟁을 벌이고 있었는데, 그 논쟁 내용을 상세히 검토해보았다. 둘째, 이를 근거로 일본에서는 야마지 아이잔과 이노우에 데쓰지로가 동정개념을 어떻게 수용했는지를고찰했다. 야마지 아이잔은 기독교를 수용하고 개인의 자율성을 위해 ‘동정’과 공고(共苦) 영웅을 연결시켰다. 그리고 서구와 동양의 이분법을 넘어 ‘인간’에 초점을 맞춰 ‘서구와 동양을 넘는 인간성’을 설명하는 방식을 채택했다. 그리고 사회주의를 국가 사회주의라는 특수성･보편성 논리를 통해 계급의 평등을 주장하는 동정공동체를 제창하고 그 정점으로 천황의 자애를 설파했다. 이노우에 데쓰지로는 야마지 아이잔과는 달리 불교를 통해 인간의보편성을 설명하고 동정공동체의 논리를 동서일원론으로 설명하는 방식을 취했다는 점을밝혀냈다. 셋째는 이를 통해 가족공동체를 지탱하는 동정개념 안에서 도덕이나 윤리의 언사가 인간과 인간 사이에 존재하는 독자적 개별성을 무너뜨리며 가족공동체가 정당성을 획득하는 논리를 살펴보았다. 결론적으로 이러한 이상주의적 ‘동정=도덕=공동체’는 무제약성을갖는 것이며 반대로 그로 인해 ‘자타분리’의 의식을 소거하는 과정이었음이 드러났다. 이에반대하는 사상은 통제하고 배제하면서 자율적 감성의식을 억압하게 만들었다. 동정개념은결국 일본 인민 대중의 자발적 복종을 강요했으며 사회주의적 균질성을 완성하는 상징으로서 천황국가의 제도(법률적 위치)를 넘어 ‘심성’을 지배하는 정당성을 확보하게 되었다. 동정공동체 논리는 국가의 이해(利害)가 우선시되었고 개인의 감정세계를 컨트롤하기 위한 감성 인과율로서 동정개념을 국민에게 주입시켜 천황이 가진 ‘순도성=숭고함’이라는 후광을밝히기 위해 자율성을 어둠 속에 갇히게 만들었음을 보여주었다.

영어초록

In this discussion, modern Japan’s nationalism is regarded as a “politicized emotional community,” and the discussion aims to investigate the process of politicizing the mind precepts. In particular, this discussion aims to identify the meaning of the concept of sympathy, which was a popular discourse in the West, as well as the “snobbishness,” which is the concept of sympathy formed as the concept of sympathy was accepted. The reason is that in Japan, the concept of sympathy, which is one of the emotions, led to the creation of a community that suppressed individual entities as it expanded to be applied to a family community and the Emperor system nationalism. Paradoxically, this shows that the Japanese logic of a family community employed sympathy, an emotion that ruled the people’s emotions. This discussion will reveal that the sympathy community that was created as the expansion of sympathy was replaced with the Japanese emperor’s fair love for everyone and became a mechanism that included and suppressed the people’s emotions. To prove this, this discussion will examine the logic of sympathy by Schopenhauer and Nietzsche, which was valued when Japan accepted the concept of sympathy from the West. There were arguments over the “possibility and impossibility to understand others” about the concept of sympathy, which was a popular memory in the West, and these arguments will be reviewed.
Second, this discussion will examine how the concept of sympathy was accepted by Yamaji Aizan (山路愛山) and Inoue Tetsujirō (井上哲次郎) in Japan. Yamaji Aizan accepted Christianity and sought to connect “sympathy” to a “hero” for individuals’ autonomy, and suggested a way to explain “humanity that transcends the boundary between the West and the East” with the focus on “humans” beyond the East–West dichotomy. Third, socialism was advocated as a “sympathy community”, which argued for “equality between classes” based on the logic of the particular and the universal of national socialism, and the benevolence of the emperor at the apex is explained. Unlike Yamaji Aizan, Inoue Tetsujirō explained the universality of humans based on Buddhism and suggested a way to explain the logic of a sympathetic community using the East-West monism. This will make the words of morality and ethics destroy independent individuality, which exists between persons, in the logic of the concept of sympathy that supports a family community, and family community gain legitimacy through the logic of the unity of the self and the others. This will, in turn, explain how the concept of sympathy expands indefinitely to the words conveying the emperor’s way at the apex and obtains mental “symbolism.” In conclusion, this discussion will reveal that this idealistic formula “Sympathy = Morality = Community” has no limits and conversely, but it was a process of eliminating the consciousness of the “separation of the self and the others.” Thoughts opposing the formula were controlled and excluded while people were made to suppress the consciousness of autonomous emotions. The concept of sympathy forced the public of Japan to be voluntarily obedient and gained the legitimacy to rule “sympathy” beyond the system (legal position) of the emperor’s state as a symbol to complete the socialistic homogeneity. A sympathy community supported by sympathy discourse puts the state’s interests first and began from the concept of sympathy, which was imported from the West and voluntarily accepted in Japan. This shows that sympathy, as the principle of causality to control individuals’ emotions, was infused into the people and the autonomy was locked in to give a halo to the idea that the emperor’s purity constitutes nobility.
