온라인 비실시간, 실시간 교양 영어 수업에 관한 원어민 교수자의 경험 연구 (A Study on Native English Instructors’ Experience with Online Asynchronous and Synchronous Classes)

본 연구는 코로나19 기간 동안 영어 교수자들의 비실시간 수업과 실시간 수업 방식의 장단점, 수업 활동, 과제, 퀴즈, 중간고사, 의사소통 도구의 사용 경험을 알아보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 광역시 소재 A 전문대학의 원어민 교수자 19명을 대상으로 설문조사를 하였다. 교수자들은 두 수업 유형에 대해 공통적으로 저조한 학습자 참여를 지적하였으며 수업 유형마다 각기 다른 장단점을 인식하고 있었다. LMS 기반 비실시간 수업의 장점은 학습자가 자기 주도형 학습이 가능한 점과 교수자가 수업 관리가 쉬운 점이었고 단점은 실시간 상호 작용이 불가능한 점과 래포 형성과 동기 부여가 어려운 점이었다. 따라서 비실시간 수업 방식은 대면 수업 또는 실시간 수업과 혼합하는 방식이 필요하다. Zoom 기반 실시간 수업의 장점은 상호작용, 영어 연습 기회, 자료 공유가 실시간으로 가능하다는 점이며 단점은 학습자의 참여 유도가 어렵고 학습자들의 줌 피로감이었다. 교수자들은 학습자들이 화면을 켜고 학습에 참여하게 하도록 여러 가지 전략을 사용하였다. 학습 활동은 비실시간 수업에서는 자기주도 학습 목적, 실시간 수업에서는 실시간으로 학습자 참여 독려 목적으로 사용되었다. 퀴즈는 비실시간 수업에서는 학습자의 진도 확인 목적, 실시간 수업에서는 실시간 말하기 연습 기회 제공을 목적으로 사용되었다. 과제와 중간고사 유형은 각 수업 간의 유의미한 차이점이 나타나지 않았고 의사소통 도구는 비실시간 수업에서 더 빈도 높게 사용되었다. 본 연구의 결과는 교수자가 온라인 수업 설계 시에 반영할 만한 시사점이 있다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study was to investigate the experiences of English instructors in terms of asynchronous classes and synchronous classes during the COVID-19 pandemic. To this end, an online survey was conducted regarding the methods of each type of class in terms of strengths and weaknesses, class activities, assignments, quizzes, midterm exams, and communication tools. A total of 19 native English-speaking college instructors participated in the survey. The results of this study showed that the instructors pointed out the low level of learner participation among the students for both types of class, and that they recognized the different strengths and weaknesses of each class type. The advantages of LMS-based classes were that students were able to learn in a self-directed manner and the instructors could easily manage their classes. The disadvantages were that it was impossible for the students and the instructors to interact in real-time, and that it was difficult to build rapport with the learners and to motivate them as well. Therefore, the LMS-based method needs to be mixed with face-to-face classes or online synchronous classes.
The perceived advantages of Zoom-based classes according to the instructors were that interaction, English practice opportunities, and class material sharing was possible in real-time. The disadvantages were that it was difficult for instructors to generate participation among the learners, and to reduce their level of “Zoom fatigue.” To cope with these issues, instructors used several strategies in order to get their students to turn on their cameras and to engage more actively in the class. In the LMS classes, learning activities were used to give chances to the students for self-directed learning, while in the Zoom classes the students were encouraged to participate in real-time. Quizzes were used to check the progress of the learners in the LMS classes, whereas in the Zoom classes, the students were given real-time speaking opportunities to practice their English skills. There was no significant difference between the two types of classes in regards to homework nor the type of midterm tests that were given. However, the communication tool was used more frequently in the asynchronous classes. The results of this study have implications for instructors, and should be taken into consideration when they are designing their online classes in the future.
