조선물산공진회 지역별 출품사례를 통한 1910년대 요업의 실마리 찾기 (Searching for clues to the ceramics industry of the 1910s in the works submitted to the Joseon Mulsan Gongjinhoe(Joseon Industrial Exhibition))

초록

본고는 조선물산공진회의 요업제품, 특히 도자기의 출품과 심사 과정을 살펴봄으로써 일본의 조선 지배 5년을 맞는 정치적 상황 속에서 박람회의 정치학과 1910년대 도자 산업이 어떤 관계 맺기를 하고 있는지 고찰한 것이다. 식민 시정을 선전하고 근대화의 개량, 진보를 과시하려 한 공진회는 조선총독부에 의한 물산의 제시뿐만 아니라 이에 대한 새로운 질서마저 부여한 것이었다. 식산흥업의 한 종목인 요업 역시 지방에서 중앙으로 심사를 거쳐 출품되기까지 조선과 일본의 민족적 구별에 의한 비교, 대조 및 이에 따른 우열과 차별 그리고 등급화가 그 제품에까지 고스란히 반영되었다. 각 도 지역별 요업제품은 도자기를 중심으로 토관, 벽돌, 기와, 유리, 석회 등이 분류, 진열되었는데 일제 강점 초기 최대 규모로, 최초의 전국적 차원에서 관계자뿐만 아니라 일반 대중에게 선보인 것이다. 이를 통해 1910년대 요업의 전국적 상황을 파악하고 양적 증대를 확인할 수 있었다. 출품자 및 출품 품목, 수상자 및 수상 품목, 심사자와 심사평가, 당대 언론 및 관람자 인식에 대한 데이터는 이 시기 요업계의 인적, 물적 경향을 보다 세밀히 직조해냈다. 대표적으로 도자기의 경우, 조선총독부와 긴밀히 연계된 인사와의 관계 속에서 근대적 생활방식의 한 표상으로써 일본의 기술력과 미적 취향에 얼마나 근접하고 있는가를 주요인으로 하여 일본인의 다도 취미, 고려자기에 대한 신드롬적 열광, 산업도자와 미술공예도자가 혼재하는 방향으로 선별되고 평가받았다. 전시회장이라는 공개적 장소에서 이루어진 식민지 조선 요업에 대한 가시화는 이후 요업계가 나아갈 방향을 제시하였을 뿐만 아니라 내선일체, 일선동화라는 식민지 시정방침의 물질적 현신에 다름 아니었다.

영어초록

This study examines the relationship between the political aspect of the Joseon Mulsan Gongjinhoe (Joseon Industrial Exhibition) and the pottery industry of the 1910s as the 5th year of the Japanese colonial rule by investigating the process of submitting and screening the ceramics ‒ especially pottery items ‒ submitted. The exhibition was designed to publicize “the achievements of colonial rule” and “the benefits provided by Japan to the Korean people through modernization.” The event was also intended to present the plan of the Japanese Governor-General’s Office in Korea concerning locally made goods. The products of the Korean ceramic industry, which fell into the category of Siksan Heungeop (i.e. a part of the policies by which the Meiji government of Japan accelerated the modernization by encouraging industry), underwent a process of comparison and rating against Japanese products until their final submittal to the exhibition.
Ceramic goods (such as clay pipes, bricks, glass roof tiles, lime goods) from each province were displayed at the exhibition, which was held on its largest scale ever in the colonial period. It was also the first event held at the national level, and was open to the general public. The event provided an opportunity to monitor the nationwide status of the ceramic industry at that time and to confirm any increase in production and consumption. Data concerning the producers, the items submitted, the prize winning craftsmen and works, the judges and their evaluations, and the way the press and visitors viewed the displayed items together constitute a record of the human and material status of the ceramics industry. As for pottery, they were evaluated as both industrial goods and artworks in connection with Japanese people’s love of tea ceremonies and their fondness for Goryeo porcelain, as those closely associated with early modern life patterns based on main points of view like how close they were to Japanese production skills and their eye for the beautiful. This visualization of the ceramic industry of Joseon, as a colony of Japan, in an open exhibition space not only presented a future direction for the local ceramic industry, but was also another instance of Japan’s policy to assimilate Koreans into the Japanese people.
