율장에 언급된 실수마라(失守摩羅)의 연원과 변용 (Sources and Modifications of Śiśumāra Mentioned in Vinaya-piṭaka)

초록

한역(漢譯) 불전에는 실수마라(śiśumāra)와 마갈(makara)이 자라(鼈), 거북(龜), 악어(鼉), 고래(鯨魚), 바다 짐승(海獸), 물에 사는 나찰(水羅刹), 대해의 벌레(大海虫), 새끼 용(虬), 바다의 용(海龍) 등으로 혼잡하게 의역되어 있다. 이는 불전을 이해하는 데 장애의 요인이 되므로, 본론에서는 이 같은 장애를 원어로 해소하면서 śiśumāra와 makara가 주요 소재로 등장하는 이야기의 변용 양상을 고찰하여 그 취지의 추이를 파악한다.
악어를 지칭하는 śiśumāra가 원숭이와 함께 주역으로 등장하는 본생담의 원형에서는 악어의 아내가 원숭이의 심장을 먹고 싶어 하는 식탐(食貪)이 이야기의 발단이다. 그러나 이 밖의 불전들에서는 이야기의 발단을 음행(淫行) 또는 음심(淫心)으로 바꾸어 부각함으로써 동일한 이야기를 지계(持戒)의 소재로 변용한다. Suṃsumāra Jātaka에 상응하는 「불설별미후경」을 단적인 예로 들 수 있다. 그리고 불전의 본생담 중에서는 가장 완성도가 높은 Mahavāstu의 Markaṭa Jātaka가 이 같은 변용의 전형을 이룬다. 『마하승기율』은 변용된 소재만을 활용하여 불음계에 대한 경각심을 고취한다.
Śiśumāra 또는 makara이 각각 원숭이 또는 거북과 함께 등장하는 이야기에서 이 주역들은 교의적 상징성을 함의한다. Śiśumāra와 makara는 포악성을 대변하면서 무지를 상징하는 반면, 원숭이와 거북은 자비심을 대변하면서 지혜를 상징한다.

영어초록

The concepts of ‘sśiśumāra’ and ‘makara’ in the Chinese Buddhist literatures have been perplexedly translated and paraphrased such as a snapping turtle, a turtle, a gavial, a whale, a marine animal, a semiaquatic rākṣasa, the worm of the ocean dragonet, and Sea dragon etc.. Because this fact is an obstacle to understand the Buddhist literatures, this article examines the stories in which śiśumāra and Makara appear as the main characteristics in order to explain this difficulty. In this process, I examine the transformation of the stories and grasp the tendency of its purpose.
Among the Jātaka, the Suṃsumāra Jātaka, which may be the origin of the story of the gavial and monkey, is likely to be. In Pañcatantra's fables, where the same subject is most expanded, food craving is the beginning of the story, and among the Buddhist literatures, the Suṃsumāra Jātaka is the same.
The term of śiśumāra, in the Jātaka's prototype which refers to a gavial appears as the protagonist with a monkey, the story begins with the craving for the gavial's wife to eat the monkey's heart. In other Buddhist literatures, however, the same story is transformed into the subject of observing precepts by changing the origin of the story into an obscene act or sexual desire. It is the good example that the book of A Tale of Terrapin and Monkey Taught by the Buddha which corresponds to the Suṃsumāra Jātaka. In addition, among the Buddhist Jātaka, the Mahavāstu's Markaṭa Jātaka, which is the most complete, is the archetype of this transformation. In the Mahāsaṅghabhikṣuṇī-vinaya, it raises awareness of the intoxication through alcohol, drugs etc. using only the transformed materials of the story.
In the story of Śiśumāra or makara with monkeys or turtles, respectively, these central characters simply represent doctrinal symbolism. Śiśumāra and makara epitomize ferocity and symbolize ignorance, while monkeys and turtles represent compassion and symbolize wisdom.
