유니버설디자인 관점의 공공화장실 설계 연구 (A study on the Application of Universal Design in the Public Restrooms for the Socially Underprivileged)

초록

현대 사회는 저출산·고령화로 인해 노인 인구와 장애인이 증가하는 추세다. 이러한 상황에서 노약자, 장애인 등 사회적 약자가 건축물 내에서 가장 불편하게 느끼는 공간이 화장실이다. 편의시설이 없거나 잘못 설치되면 일반인들은 화장실 이용에 불편을 느끼는 정도이지만 장애인들은 이용할 수 없는 경우가 많다. 이러한 문제점을 개선하기 위해서 본 연구에는 서울, 인천, 대전 등 7개 도시에 있는 백화점, 마트, 대학 등 87시설에 대해서 현장조사와 설문조사를 실시하여 설계 참고지표를 개발하였다. 현장조사결과, 백화점이나 마트와 같이 인테리어가 좋고 관리가 잘 되는 시설은 평가점수가 높았지만 지하철, 대학, 공공기관의 화장실은 설치위치, 시설 노후도, 이용자 수에 영향을 받아 점수가 낮게 평가되었다. 또한 장애인 화장실까지의 유도 안내사인이 체계적이지 않아 개선이 요구되었다. 설문조사에서는 장애인들은 독립된 공간인 장애인전용화장실을 선호했으나 누구나 이용 가능한 다목적화장실도 장애인이용가능 화장실이 설치된 상태에서는 대부분 찬성하는 것으로 나타났다. 87개 화장실 중에서 평가점수가 중상위권에 해당하는 화장실을 기준 모델로 지정하고 현장조사와 설문조사를 통해서 분석된 참고지표와 유니버설디자인 개념을 이용하여 기준 모델을 재설계하였다. 본 연구에서는 기준모델과 재설계된 유니버설디자인 화장실의 비교분석을 통해서 한정된 공간 내에서 다양한 사용자에게 보다 만족스러운 시설을 제공하기 위해서 어떤 부분을 배려해야 하는지 설계접근방향을 제시하고자 했다.

영어초록

The modern society continues to see the number of the elderly and disabled persons rise due to the low birth rate and the aging of the population. In this circumstance, one of the places where such persons experience inconvenience most is the public restrooms. The general public may only feel uncomfortable in the restrooms that are constructed with no convenience facilities or inappropriately designed, but the disabled may not be able to readily use such restrooms. In an effort to find solutions to these problems, we conducted a series of field and questionnaire surveys focusing on a total of 87 restrooms located in department stores, discount stores, and colleges in seven major cities across the nation including Seoul, Incheon and Daegu, and developed the design reference indexes. The field survey showed that while the facilities with good interior design or well-managed such as those located in department stores or discount stores scored high marks, those in the subway stations, colleges or the public institutions scored low due to the influences by the specific locations and the level of deterioration of such installations and the number of the users. The guiding signs also needed improvement as they were not installed in a systematic way. According to the results of the questionnaire survey, the disabled persons were found to prefer separate restrooms dedicated to the disabled only, but most of them also said a type of multi-purpose restroom for general use should be no problem as long as such restrooms have the stalls dedicated to the disabled. Taking those restrooms that scored mid-upper level out of the 87 restrooms under consideration as the reference models, we redesigned the reference models using the reference indexes analyzed through the field study and questionnaire survey and the concept of universal design. In this study, we tried to propose a design approach by examining which parts should be considered to better satisfy the users of the limited space of restrooms through a comparison of the reference models and the redesigned universal design-based ones.
