백제의 금동대향로와 해양실크로드 (Baekje Gilt-bronze Incense Burner and Maritime Silk Road)

초록

백제는 중국과 한반도의 여러 나라를 연결시키고, 왜국에까지 문물을 전해주었다. 백제 초기에는 낙랑군과 대방군의 도움으로 외국 문물을 받아들였으나 낙랑군과 대방군이 소멸되고 고구려가 서해의 해상권을 차지하자, 근초고왕이 고구려를 공격하여 황해도 지역을 장악하고 황해 횡단항로를 개척하여 서해의 해상권을 장악하였다. 장수왕이 평양 천도를 하고 한성을 함락시키자 황해횡단 항로를 이용하기 어려웠으나 무령왕이 고구려를 공격하고 한강유역을 수복하여 횡단항로를 다시 활용하여 중국의 남조 양나라와 활발한 문물 교류를 행하였다. 따라서 다시 강국이 되었다는 의미는 황해의 해상권을 장악하여 해상의 강국이 다시 되었다는 뜻이라 하겠다. 이 때에 동남아시아의 부남국과 임읍국과 문물을 교류하여 왜국에 전해주기도 하였으며, 승려 겸익을 인도에 파견하여 직접적인 교류를 시작하였다.
특히 성왕이 538년 사비로 천도하고, 553년 신라에게 한강 유역을 빼앗기자 6세기 후반 황해 사단항로를 개척하여 양나라와 직접적인 교류를 하였다. 백제금동대향로에 부조된 남방지역의 동물들 중 악어와 코끼리를 통하여 동남아시아 국가들과 직접적인 교류를 확인할 수 있었다. 그리고 한대에 사용되고 남북조시대에는 보이지 않는 금동으로 만든 금동향로를 부남국과 입읍국 왕이 궁궐에서 사용하고 있었다는 것을 알게 되어 우리의 시야를 넓힐 수 있었다. 아울러 일본의 성무천황이 재위시 사용하다가 사후에 공헌한 향로의 사례를 참고하여 백제의 금동대향로도 성왕이 사용하다가 사후에 릉사에 공헌한 것으로 보았다. 따라서 금동대향로의 제작 시기는 성왕의 재위기간인 523~554년 사이이며, 사비 천도 이후로 보아 538년에서 554년 사이로 보았다. 백제를 중흥시킨 성왕은 북조와 남조와 교류하였을 뿐만 아니라 동남아시아와 교류하여 동남아시아의 동물들도 향로에 부조하여 글로벌 백제의 위용을 과시하고자 하였던 것이다.
백제지역에서는 유리구슬의 출토량이 많으며, 4세기 이후 다양한 색상의 소다유리가 유입되었다. 다양한 색상의 유리가 공주와 부여 뿐만아니라, 나주와 함평 등 해안가에 가까운 지역에서 출토되는 것을 볼 때 이는 동남아시아의 유리가 해양실크로드를 통해 지속적으로 백제에 유입되었다는 것을 말해 준다고 하겠다. 이러한 해상활동을 할 수 있는 백제의 항해술과 조선술을 ‘百濟路’와 ‘百濟舶’의 존재를 통해 알아보고, 서남해안의 항구와 탐라국의 중요성을 확인할 수 있었다.

영어초록

The Maritime Silk Road was recognized as only a sea route from Rome to China. However, according to historical documents and artifacts, it was confirmed that it was a route that not only reached China through India and Southeast Asia, but also through the Korean Peninsula to Japan.
In particular, Baekje connected China with various countries on the Korean Peninsula and even transmitted culture to the Japanese country. In the early days of Baekje, foreign civilization was accepted with the help of Nakranggun and Daebanggun. When the Nakrang and Daebang armies were destroyed and Goguryeo took over maritime rights in the West Sea, King Geunchogo attacked Goguryeo, took control of the Hwanghae-do region, pioneered a trans-Yellow Sea route, and took control of maritime rights in the West Sea. However, when King Jangsu transferred the capital to Pyeongyang and captured Hanseong, it was difficult to use the trans-Yellow Sea route. But King Muryeong attacked Goguryeo and recovered the Han River basin, utilizing the trans-sea route again and carrying out active cultural exchanges with the Yang Dynasty of the Southern Dynasty in China. Therefore, becoming a powerful country again means that it has become a maritime power again by taking control of the maritime rights of the Yellow Sea. At this time, cultural relics were exchanged with the Bunam and Im-eup kingdoms in Southeast Asia and passed on to the Japanese kingdom, and direct exchanges began by dispatching the monk Gyeom-ik to India.
When King Seong transferred the capital to Sabi in 538 and the Han River basin was taken over by Silla in 553, the Yellow Sea Slant Route was pioneered in the late 6th century, leading to direct exchanges with the Yang Dynasty. Direct exchanges with Southeast Asian countries could be confirmed through crocodiles and elephants among the animals from the southern region depicted on the Baekje gilt-bronze incense burner. And we were able to broaden our perspective by learning that the kings of Bunam and Im-eup were using gilt-bronze incense burners in their palaces, which were used during the Han Dynasty and not seen during the Northern and Southern Dynasties. In addition, referring to the case of the incense burner that Emperor Seongmu of Japan used during his reign and contributed to the tomb after his death, the gilt-bronze incense burner of Baekje was also considered to have been used by King Seongmu and contributed to the tomb temple after his death. Therefore, the production period of the gilt-bronze incense burner was considered to be between 523 and 554, during the reign of King Seong, and between 538 and 554 after the transfer of the capital to Sabi. King Seong, who revived Baekje, wanted to show off the majesty of global Baekje by placing animals from not only the Northern and Southern Dynasties, but also Southeast Asia, on the incense burner.
A large amount of glass beads has been excavated from the Baekje region, and soda glass of various colors has been introduced since the 4th century. Considering that glass of various colors was excavated not only in Gongju and Buyeo, but also in areas close to the coast such as Hampyeong and Haenam, this shows that glass from Southeast Asia was continuously introduced into Baekje via the Maritime Silk Road. Baekje's navigation and shipbuilding skills, which enable such maritime activities, were discovered through the existence of the ‘Baekje Road’ and ‘Baekje Ship’, and the importance of the port and Tamna State on the southwestern coast could be confirmed.
