주호민의 <신과 함께>에 나타난 한민족 신화 활용 스토리텔링 연구 (A Study of Storytelling Using Korean Myths in Joo Ho Min’s )

초록

주호민의 만화 <신과 함께>는 한민족 신화를 활용한 대표 사례로 주목받았는데, 이 작품의 스토리텔링은 다음과 같은 두 단계로 진행되었다. 먼저 이야기 가치에 대한 점검 단계에서는 저승차사, 이승과 저승, 가택신 등의 내용을 중점적으로 다루었다. 이들은 모두 한민족 신화의 특징적 화소인데, 주호민은 그 가치를 적극적으로 수용하면서도 현대적으로 재해석했다. 저승차사와 관련해서는 인정에 흔들리거나, 이승 사건에 개입하는 등 신화의 내용을 반영하면서도, 각 인물 별로 개성을 부여하여 구분했다. 또한 저승은 이승과 긴밀하게 연관된 공간이라는 신화의 내용을 수용하여, 작품 배경으로 활용했다. 가택신과 관련해서는 집안 식구들을 지킨다는 본래 의미를 유지하면서, 신화처럼 신들의 사연을 소개하기보다 저승차사들과 대립하는 이야기를 중점적으로 제시했다.
다음으로 스토리텔링을 구현하는 단계는 다음의 세 가지 방향에서 점검했다. 첫째, 정의 구현과 현실 반영. <신과 함께>의 주제는 이승에서 이루어지지 못한 정의가 저승에서는 실현된다는 믿음인데, 이는 한민족 신화의 주제와도 상통한다. 다만 주호민은 주제를 표현하기 위해, 작품 전반에 현실상황을 반영하고, 설정과 상징을 유효적절하게 활용했다. 둘째, 통합적 세계관의 구축. <신과 함께>는 여러 자료에 산재된 한민족 신화의 내용을 수합하고, 주제에 맞춰 조합하여 통합적 세계관을 구축했다. 이를 통해 개연성이 확보되고, 나아가 이후 문화콘텐츠 각 분야에서 한민족 신화를 활용할 근거가 마련되었다. 셋째, 재미요소의 도입. 웹툰은 독자의 반응이 실시간으로 노출되기 때문에, 부분적인 재미를 함께 구현할 필요가 있다. <신과 함께>에서도 현실 비틀기와 감성을 강조한 연출법 등을 통해 장면의 재미를 강조하는 스토리텔링이 이루어졌다.
이처럼 <신과 함께>는 한민족 신화가 지향하는 가치, 특징, 체계에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 독창적인 스토리텔링을 구현했다. 그러나 한민족 신화의 면모를 모두 담아내지는 못했다. 앞으로 한민족 신화를 활용한 작품이 활발히 발표되면, 다양한 스토리텔링 방법이 모색되리라 기대한다.

영어초록

Joo Ho Min's webtoon <Along With the Gods> has received an attention as a representative example of storytelling using Korean myths. The storytelling of this work was conducted in two stages: examining the story value of Korean myths; and expression of the artist’s intention by changing and rearranging it.
In the first stage of examining the value of stories, the author highlighted an angel of death, this world and after world, and gods of house, all of which being characteristic story elements of Korean myths. Joo Ho Min dabbled at contemporary reinterpretation of the said elements all while positively embracing their values. In the case of the angel of death, the character was differentiated by being assigned with a distinctive personality while reflecting the contents of the myth, as the character would be shaken by human emotions or intervenes in the events of this world. In addition, the after world was used as the background of the story by accepting the assumption of the myth that the afterlife is a space that is closely linked with this world. With regard to the gods of house, the author highlighted the confrontation with the angels of death rather than exposing intimate side of the gods just as in usual myths all while retaining the original idea that the gods of house are actually the patrons of family.
In the second stage of storytelling implementation, the story was examined from the following three directions. First, realization of justice and reflection of cold reality: <Along With the Gods> is based on the popular belief that justice, which has not been realized in this world, may be realized in the afterlife, an idea that echoes the theme of Korean myth. To express this theme, however, the author designed the setting and symbols appropriately to reflect the reality throughout the story. Second, building of an integrated world view: <Along With the Gods> succeeded in constructing an integrated world view by collecting the contents of Korean myths scattered along various materials and then reassembling them in accordance with the main theme. As such, the plausibility of the story has been warranted, thereby laying the groundwork for further utilization of Korean myths in other field of cultural contents. Third, the introduction of fun elements: Since web comics are exposed in real time to readers’ reactions, it is necessary for authors to incorporate fun elements partially. The storytelling of <Along With the Gods> put an emphasis on the fun aspects of each scene by employing direction techniques characterized for reality twist and emotional charge.
As such, <Along With the Gods> succeeded in realizing an original storytelling based on the understanding of values, characteristics, and systems embodied by Korean myths. However, the work failed to incorporate entire aspects of Korean myths. I hope that a variety of storytelling methods will be sought after if more works using Korean myths are actively released in the future.
