권위적 神會에서 합리적 信賴로: 미술품 감정의 미래가치 (From Authoritativeness, Spiritual Resonance to Rationality, Due Diligence: Future Values of Connoisseurship)

초록

예술경영·문화정책·전시기획 종사자에 의해 주도된 최근의 미술시장 담론에서 眞僞鑑定과 時 價鑑定으로 대변되는 감정은 미술품 경매제도의 육성과 미술시장 활성화를 위한 대안으로 주목받았다. 그에 반하여 대부분의 미술사가는 감정에 공식적으로 관여하기를 꺼려해왔는데, 진위 문제는 시비와 논쟁과 소송의 온상이 되기 쉬웠고, 시가를 거론하는 것은 터부시되었기 때문이다. 그러한 가운데 미술시장이나 미술품 감정은 20세기에 출현한 새로운 분야로 간주되거나 미술사학과는 무관한 영역으로 치부되면서 다양한 오해를 낳고 있다. 조선 후기의 회화 수집 활동, 근세 동아시아의 수장가·후원자·미술시장과 도시문화를 염두에 두고 화단과의 관계를 검토해온 필자는연구과정에 감정이나 위작에 관한 다양한 사례를 접하였다. 그런 만큼 董其昌(1555-1636), 石濤 (1642-1707) 같은 중국화가, 鄭敾(1676-1759), 金弘道(1742-1806 이후) 같은 한국화가의 주변에 시장이 산재했고, 화가나 수장가·후원자는 그 자신이 감식안을 보유한 감정가일 수 있었음을주목하게 된다. 이에 근거하여 이 글은 미술사 연구, 문화재 가치평가를 위한 핵심적인 방법론 중하나로 감정의 위상과 기능을 확인하고, 시장이야말로 구매자와 매도자 모두의 안목을 단련한, 가치의 구별과 평가와 교환이 다함께 일어나는 가치판단의 원천적 현장임을 논하고자 하였다.
미술품 감정, 미술사 연구와 문화재 보존, 그리고 미술시장은 서로 밀접한 관계에 있고, 감정은 미술사가 본연의 연구분야다. 특히 명 후기 이래 중국회화사의 여러 사례는 수장가의 수집 활동과 화가의 창작활동, 양자의 감상 및 품평 활동의 이면에 시장이 있음을 파악하기에 용이하다. 또한, 20세기 미국에서의중국회화사 연구를 통해 정비된 양식분석, 형식분석, 시대양식, 개인양식 등의 개념과 용어가 출현한 계기가 미국에 유입된 중국회화의 연대와 작가, 진위, 우열 문제를 해결하기 위한 현실적인 필요에 따라 서양미술사의 형식주의 방법론과 중국의 전통 서화감정학이 결합한 것이었음을 유념해야 할 것이다. 그러한 전개과정에서 파생된 감정의 여러 양상과 진위감정의 어려움, 양식분석의 유효성을 살펴보았고, 1990년대 이래급부상한 시가감정 영역의 새로운 방법론도 알아보았다. 나아가 20세기 말 한국에서 학술담론으로 대두한 감정 논의의 현황과 조선 후기의 진위감정 관련 사례를 검토함으로써 과거부터 현재에 이르기까지 미술품 수집과 감상에 있어서 시장이 지속적으로 커다란 비중을 차지해왔고, 지식과 경험과 직관에 입각한 감정이 권위를 가졌음을 파악할 수 있었다. 마지막으로, 미술사 연구와 문화재의 보존·활용에 기여할 실용학문으로서 감정이 지향해야 하는 미래가치는 합리성, 성실한 업무수행에 기반한 신뢰임을 덧붙이면서 미술사 전공자 사이에서 감정에 관한 관심과 연구가 활발하고도 신중하게 축적되어 가기를 기대한다.

영어초록

Those involved in arts management, cultural policy, and exhibition planning view current leading art market discourse representing connoisseurship as belonging to two sectors - authentication and appraisal - notably as methods to cultivate the art auction system and activate the art market. Contrarily, most art historians are reluctant to delve into connoisseurship, due to the taboo of critiquing authenticity and market value, which may easily lead to disputes or litigation. The fields of art market and connoisseurship, meanwhile, are often mistaken as new fields that emerged in the 20th century, and thus unrelated to art history. However, through the examination of art collection practice in the late-Joseon era, as well as examination of relationships with the art world in the context of early-modern East Asia collectors, art sponsors, art markets, and city culture, one will come across various instances of forgeries and connoisseurship in their research. Painters such as China’s Dong Qichang (1555-1636) and Shitao (1642-1707), as well as Korea’s Jeong Seon (1676-1759), and Kim Hongdo (1742-after 1806) were situated in fragmented markets, and painters or collectors and sponsors of the time may have been avid partakers in connoisseurship. As such, this thesis finds artistic connoisseurship as a key methodology for art history research and cultural heritage valuation, and argues that the art market, above all, cultivates a discerning eye for buyers and sellers alike, and is the source for art value discernment, critique, and exchange.
Connoisseurship is intimately intertwined with art history research, preservation of cultural heritage, and the arts market, thus being a fundamental field of research for art history. The instance of the Chinese art history from the late-Ming period is an especially useful tool for understanding how, in addition to art collection and creative works of art by painters, as well as the connoisseurship and criticisms of these parties, there also existed various facets of markets behind these activities.
Furthermore, it should be noted that formalistic methodology in western art history combined with traditional Chinese connoisseurship due to a practical necessity to solve issues involving date, author, authenticity, and quality, thus originating terms such as formal analysis, style analysis, period style, personal style, etc.
in 20th century Chinese art history scholarship in the United States. Resulting research in connoisseurship has thus examined the difficulties of various styles and authentications, styles analysis and validity, and the sudden occurrence of appraisal methods since the 1990s. By investigating discussions on connoisseurship and instances of authentication in the late Joseon era that appeared in Korean scholarly discourse in the late 20th and early 21st century, it can be confirmed that the art market continued to occupy a considerable share of creative work, collection, appreciation, and criticism in traditional Korea as well, in which connoisseurship based in knowledge, experience, and subjective intuition was considered authoritative.
Finally, it can be expected that connoisseurship, as a practical field for arts history research and cultural heritage preservation, must add due diligence based on rationality and sincerity, and that future art historians continue to accumulate interest and research in the field o f connoisseurship.
