안재홍의 3ㆍ1민족운동像과 신민족주의의 역사의식 (Ah Jae Hong’s Retrospective View of the March 1st Movement and the Historical Consciousness of the New Nationalism)

초록

3ㆍ1민족운동은 한국사에서 차지하는 무게만큼이나 질과 양에서 가장 큰 비중으로 논급되는 식민지시기 최대의 항일민족항쟁이었다. 8ㆍ15해방 후 각 정치세력들도 넓게는 한국민족사 전체, 좁게는 자신들의 경험ㆍ실천 영역이었던 민족운동사를 역사비평하면서, 그들의 정치 이념과 노선을 정당화하는 준거로 3ㆍ1민족운동을 해석하였다. 모든 정치세력들에게 3ㆍ1민족운동은 무엇보다도 중요한 역사 텍스트로서, 여기서 도출한 교훈은 그대로 현재 노선의 타당성과 지향점을 표현하였다.
8ㆍ15해방 직후 좌익ㆍ우익을 불문하고 모든 정치세력들이 3ㆍ1민족운동을 역사비평하면서, 이의 긍정정ㆍ부정성의 양면을 동시에 언급ㆍ반성하는 모습을 보였다. 그러나 안재홍은 식민지시기나 8ㆍ15해방 후에도 일관되게 최상급의 언어를 동원하여 3ㆍ1민족운동을 극찬하였다. 그에게 ‘3ㆍ1정신의 진면목’은 일체의 분열이 개입하지 않았던 ‘전민족적 협동’이었다. 8ㆍ15해방 후 그가 제창한 신민족주의 사상의 핵심어는 ‘초계급적 통합민족국가’였다. 안재홍은 3ㆍ1민족운동에서 ‘초계급적’의 원형과 실상을 확인하였다. 민족 내부의 모든 분열ㆍ대립을 극복하려는 정신에서 볼 때, 3ㆍ1민족운동은 지극한 모델이었으므로, 그는 3ㆍ1민족운동의 역사상을 신민족주의 국가건설의 ‘이상향’과 동일시하였다.
이 논문은 한국 근현대사의 민족지성들이 3ㆍ1민족운동을 어떻게 인식하였으며, 이를 어떻게 실천론으로 이어나갔는가를 해명하려는 문제의식에서 출발하여, 먼저 안재홍의 3ㆍ1민족운동像과 신민족주의 국가건설론의 상관성을 다루려는 작업의 연속이다. 다 아는 바와 같이, 안재홍은 8ㆍ15해방 후 신민족주의와 신민주주의를 제창하였다. 그의 3ㆍ1민족운동像과 이에 근거를 둔 역사의식은, 그의 사상의 총체인 신민족주의ㆍ신민주주의 속에도 내재화ㆍ가시화하여 중요한 구성 부분을 이루었다.
안재홍의 3ㆍ1민족운동像은 오늘날 학계의 3ㆍ1민족운동사 연구에서 논쟁을 촉발하였던 내용과 상당한 부분 중첩된다. 그의 3ㆍ1민족운동상이 절대화되어 신민족주의 이념의 중요한 부분을 이루었다는 점에서 다분히 주관성을 갖지만, 당시대의 역사참여자가 3ㆍ1민족운동에 어떠한 인식을 보였는가 검토함은, 오늘날 학계의 논점에 판단 자료를 제공하는 의미도 있을 듯하다.

영어초록

The March 1st Movement was the largest anti-Japanese national uprising during the colonial period, and as such it has been treated by historians as one of the most critical events in Korean history. After liberation from the Japanese occupation in August 1945, various political groups critiqued the history of nationalist movements, which constituted the nation’s history as well as their own experience and practice, and in the process they interpreted the March 1st Movement in efforts to justify their political ideology and line. To all political groups, the March 1st Movement was the most important historical text, and the lessons derived from it led them directly to their current political line’s validity and direction.
Right after liberation, all political groups, regardless of being right or left, acknowledged and regretted both its positive and negative aspects through their historical criticism of the March 1st Movement. However, Ahn Jae Hong was consistent in extolling the March 1st Movement in high praises. To him, the ‘true character of the March 1st Movement’ was the ‘cooperation among all Korean people’ without any division amongst them. The keyword of the New Nationalism that he promoted after liberation was the ‘unified nation state transcending class divisions.’ Ahn identified in the March 1st Movement the form and actuality of transcending classes. Since the March 1st Movement was the utmost ideal for overcoming divisions and conflicts among Koreans, he equated the retrospective view of the March 1st Movement with the ‘utopia’ of nation building under the New Nationalism.
In section 1 of this paper, we examined Ahn Jae Hong’s theory of the causes of the March 1st Movement during the colonial period and after the August 1945 liberation, and discussed his theory regarding the effects of the March 1st Movement. In Section 2, we confirmed how he perceived and defined the principal agents, character, and meaning of the March 1st Movement. In Section 3, we explained the thesis that Ahn Jae Hong’s retrospective view of the March 1st Movement became established as an ideal of the New Nationalism. By doing so, we intended to confirm that his retrospective view of the March 1st Movement became the foundation for the historical consciousness of the New Nationalism.
