    초록

    The purpose of this essay is to validate the theological character of Gordon Kaufman. My argument lies in the presupposition that the theology of Gordon Kaufman is the updated theology of the death of God. What I mean by it is that if we view the In the Face of Mystery of Gordon Kaufman from the perspective of the theology of the death of God, his description of how things are is similar to those of theology of the death of God, particularly Van Buren, Hamilton, and Altizer.
    My intention is not to compare theology of Gordon Kaufman to the theology of the death of God. Simply I am looking at In the Face of Mystery from the major issues brought by Van Buren, Hamilton and Altizer and find out the similarity between them. Although they are little bit a different what they articulate how things really are, but they have in common with that God must be related to the world only.
    Viewed from the perspective of the theology of the death of God, Gordon Kaufman took the issues by them and elaborated those in the discourse of God. According to Kaufman, God is the mystery in terms of the ultimate point of reference in which everything is understood and interpreted. In the assumption of the mystery, God is beyond any kind of the articulation and in that so, Kaufman argued that human made a mistake to perceive His Being in the form of human character in stead of the vital force of the evolution of the world. According to Kaufman, God is the only possible clue to puzzle the essential question for human beings how they were evolved and to where they are heading, and what is the proper way to fulfill destiny.
    In order to articulate the answer for those questions, Kaufman argued that God must be seen as the mysterious working principle within the process of the evolution. In doing so, he has taken the issues by the theology of the death of God and stepped forward to articulate God in terms of the vital force of the evolving universe. That the vital force of the creativity in Kaufman's idea of God is seems to me that which the theology of death of God might have articulated. My intention is that if they have pursued their ideas with the knowledge of the science, their theologies might have been a similar to that of Kaufman. So, I assume that the theology of Kaufman is the future of their theologies.
