韓國戰爭 관련 공산측 신사료의 해석과 문제점 (The New Communist Sources of the Korean War: Interpreting Their Incompleteness)

The decade from the mid-1980s was a golden era for the study of the Korean War. The Governments of the PRC and Russia released new sources related to the Korean War. Newly available sources include 1) witnes accounts by the former North Korean officials 2) memoirs by the Chinese veterans of the Korean War and the Chinese Communist sources 3) newly released secret documents of the former Soviet Union.This paper introduces the newly released sources and discusses the finite of historical values of them. Studies based on these sources are examined and the validity of their arguments are tested.The former North Korean officials, who published a inside viewer’s account to the Korean War, had commonly experienced the purge by Kim Il-sung and had exiled to the former Soviet Union. Their accounts are mared with a hatred for Kim and gratitude to the Soviet Union. The Chinese memoirs are often limited to the battle scenes of the War and seldom give clues to the political background of the outbreak of and the intervention in the War. The CCP sources include documents authored by the Chinese only and exclude documents they might have received from other parties. The Soviet Sources, mostly ciphered telegrams communicated between Pyongyang and Moscow, were made and sent by Soviet personnels. They include informations about what Kim Il-sung and other North Korean leaders had said about the Korean War. But there is no single piece of document made by the North Korean themselves. It is a question to what extent the Soviets in Pyongyang merely transmitted what had been occurring in North Korea without prejudice.
Given these limits of the sources, the arguments that the impetus of the Korean War came from Pyongyang should be taken with a reservation.
