성장기 愼後聃의 지적 욕망과 『河濱雜著』 (Sin Hu Dam’s Intellectual Appetite and Habin’s Miscellaneous Writings during His Period of Growth)

초록

이 글은 河濱 愼後聃(1702∼1761)의 『河濱雜著』와 『河濱先生年譜』를 중심 자료로 삼아, 신후담이라는 조선 지식인이 십대의 성장기에 어떤 지적 욕구를 지녔는지, 어떤 지적 활동과 글쓰기를 수행했는지를 검토한 것이다. 한국-대만 간 국제학술회의에서 발표한 내용이므로 한국의 특수한 자료를 소개하여 국외의 학자들과 관심을 공유하자는 취지를 반영하여 작성하였다.
이에 따라 본고는 『河濱雜著』가 십대의 지적 욕구와 글쓰기를 풍성하게 보여주는 희귀한 자료임을 강조한 다음, 신후담의 사례가 18세기 동북아시아 지식인의 지적 성장사를 탐구하는 맥락에서 주의 깊게 관찰될 필요가 있음을 강조하였다. 이를 위해 본문에서는 『河濱先生年譜』에 나타난 십대 신후담의 학습과 글쓰기의 과정을 개관하고, 『河濱雜著』에 수록된 십대의 작문 자료들을 검토하여 知的 視界와 지식의 성격을 조망했다. 특히 의성어와 의태어를 한문으로 기록해둔 자료, 곡물과 과일에 대한 약식 한문 사전 등의 자료는 경계 없는 지적 욕구의 소산이자 조선의 토착적, 口語的 지식을 한문 글쓰기의 영역으로 흡수하고자 한 결과라고 보았다.
신후담이 보여준 십대의 왕성한 지적 호기심과 자유로움은 새로운 학문을 향한 무한한 가능성을 보유하고 있었다. 자신이 살아가야 할 삶의 태생적이고 지정학적 조건을 지적 세계 안에서 확충해나갈 기회가 있었던 것이다. 하지만 성인의 단계로 접어들면서 그는 결국 기존의 권위에 순응하며 儒家 經學으로 회귀했다. 이 과정은 지식의 검열, 계급성, 나아가 진짜 지식과 가짜 지식의 관계를 되묻게 하는 지식사적 의미가 내포된 것이었다.

영어초록

This paper examines the intellectual appetite Joseon scholars had in their adolescence, and how they performed intellectual activities and writing tasks by looking at Habin Sin Hu Dam’s (1702∼1761) Habin’s Miscellaneous Writings and A Chronological Record of Habin. The record was completed with the intent of introducing special Korean documents and sharing them with overseas scholars.
Therefore, this paper firstly emphasizes that Habin’s Miscellaneous Writings is a unique document which shows the state of adolescent's intellectual desire and writing, and also stresses that Sin Hu Dam as an example, needs to be observed in the context of examining the Northeast Asian intellectual’s history of growth during the 18th century. In order to do this, the body of this article overviews the process of the teenager in the teachings and writings which Sin Hu Dam’s described in A Chronological Record of Habin. It also takes view of the intellectual sight and the characteristic of knowledge by examining the teenager’s essay contained in Habin’s Miscellaneous Writings. Particularly, documents written in Chinese characters that are onomatopoeic and mimetic, and the boundless demand of intellectual appetite of documents such as dictionaries which describe grains and fruits through simplified Chinese Characters, were considered the result of the adoption of knowledge, which was the scope of Joseon’s indigenous and colloquial knowledge, as well as the product of Chinese Writings.
Sin Hu Dam depicted the teenager’s vigorous intellectual curiosity and freedom, and showed his infinite potential for new studies. He had an opportunity to expand the inherent and geopolitical conditions of his life through his intellectual sphere. However, becoming an adult, he moved backwards and conformed to a standard state of authority by studying Confucian Classics. This movement contains censorship of knowledge, the characteristics of class, and even further intents to find the meaning of history-based knowledge and the relationship between that knowledge which is true and false.
