新韓屋의 미학적 문제와 지향 -다물장원을 통해 본 신한옥 기술 현대화 과제와 문화적 연속성 확보 사이의 긴장관계- (Aesthetic Problems of New-Hanok: Damulland Between Technological Modernization and Cultural Continuity)

초록

한국 현대건축에서 형식주의와 윤리성 사이의 문제는 건축미학적 담론의 핵심적 주제이다. 새로운 건축기술이 도입되면서 기존의 문화적 전통과 갈등을 일으키는 것은 자연스런 현상이다. 그러나 한국 건축계가 보여주는 현대건축과 전통건축 분야의 완벽한 분리 상황을 극복하는 과제가 신한옥에 주어진다. 다물장원은 그에 대한 구체적 실천의 하나이며, 이 논문은 그에 대한 건축미학 측면의 반성이다.
한옥의 가치는 한옥이미지가 환기하는 정서적 분위기에 대한 복고적 향수에 압도되어 간과되는 경향을 보여 왔다. 다물장원은 저탄소 친인체건축으로서 전통한옥이 갖는 가치에 주목하고 있다. 신한옥을 실천하는 일에는 전통 기법과 현대적 기술 사이의 충돌과 선택 속에 미학적 문제와 그 해결과정이 지속적으로 이어진다. 지붕과 벽, 바닥의 구조와 재료 및 공법 등에서 자연재료의 사용방식은 물론 그 환경성능이나 비용에 대한 판단이 미학적 결정과 수시로 얽혀 들어가는 것이다.
한옥의 지붕 형식 현대화는 전통 형식에 대한 복고적 선호나 모더니스트의 거부 자세를 넘어서야 한다. 다물장원에서는 신한옥의 경사지붕과 처마를 비롯하여 팔작지붕과 맞배지붕 및 서까래와 당골막이 등 성능을 고려한 지붕구조와 재료 및 상세 결정이라는 구체적 기술적 과제 속에 미학적 문제가 대두되고 해결되는 과정을 보여준다. 아울러 목구조 형식의 골격을 유지하면서 벽체와 바닥 재료의 환경성능과 인체 친화성을 확보하는 처리방식 속에 시각적 인지가능성을 넘어서는 다양한 건축미학적 문제가 있음을 논하였다. 또한 현대적 버내큘러나 키치로 판단할 수도 있는 두 사찰 건물 사례를 통해 한옥 형식을 재현하는 양극단의 경향을 비교하였다. 문화재급 전통 수공예를 반복하는 호화한옥의 복고적 자세보다는 공업적으로 생산되는 대중의 저렴한 한옥에서 좀 더 건전한 건축미학적 정직성을 볼 수 있다.
다물장원은 한국의 현대예술로서 이 땅의 풍토와 기후에 적응하는 기술을 시도하면서 문화적 연속성을 구현하는 신한옥을 대중적으로 널리 보급한다는 미학적 지향과 실천을 보여 주고 있다.

영어초록

The conflict between formalism and ethics is the key theme in Korean contemporary architecture. The struggle between the adopted new architectural technology and the existing cultural tradition is ubiquotous. Korean architects have special task of resolving the hard barrier between the modern vs. traditional sectors of architecture. Damulland, the new-hanok experiment site, is one of the concrete praxis upon such a challenge, and this article is an aesthetical reflection on it.
The revivalist nostalgia of emotional milieu from the imagery of hanok has overridden Korean architecture-world forcing the general public blind over the genuine value of traditional hanok. In the Damulland the author keeps attention on the value of traditional hanok as a low carbon architecture and at the same time as a health raising architecture. In the practice of new-hanok, many aesthetic problems collide and are selected continuously within the traditional hanok craft and the new modern technology. The aesthetic decision, the judgement on the use of natural material and construction of roof, wall and floor, and the assessment of their cost and physical-environmental performance are always intermingled together.
It is recommended that we overcome the revivalist preference or the rigid modernist refrain from the moderization of roof form in hanok. We could find out in Damulland, the raise and resolution of the aesthetic problems within the concrete technological tasks of decision of roof structure, its material and detail, considering their performance and style-the slant and eaved roof, the rectangular rafter etc.. Furthermore, many aesthetic problems which are extended over the tangible visual perception are embedded in the very treatment of the wall and floor materials, maintaining the wood frame structure form and at the same time satisfying the performance and health criteria. In addition the author discussed extreme trends of hanok representation comparing two cases of hanok temple which could be regarded as examples of modern industrial vernacular and/or kitsch. We can find out aesthetically more honest and healthy attitude in the ordinary hanok of industrial production rather than the opposite craft-oriented carpenter's superfluous luxurious revivalist repeat.
The aesthetic intention and practice of the Damulland as a contemporary Korean art shows a case of realization of cultural continuity taming the construction technology for Korean land and weather.
