초록

에스겔서 1장은 구약성서 어느 곳에서도 찾아보기 어려울 정도로 섬세한 신적 환상 묘사를 한다. 에스겔은 자신의 신적 체험을 매우 상세하고 정교하게 묘사한다. 더 이상 자세한 언급이 불필요할 만큼 그렇게 세부적으로 꼼꼼하게 묘사한다.
그런데 에스겔의 신적 환상 묘사는 에스겔이 경험한 것을 그대로 묘사하지 못하고, 전혀 관계없는 것들을 통해서 에스겔이 목격한 것을 유추하도록 하기 때문에, 에스겔이 하는 체험 묘사가 자세하면 자세할수록 그것이 도대체 무엇인지 알 수 없게 만드는 아이러니를 발생케 한다.
그리고 에스겔의 신적 환상 묘사는 독자들이 잘 아는 어휘들을 사용함에도 불구하고, 그것들이 종합적으로 드러내주는 것은 도무지 상상하기 어려운 괴이한 것이어서 익숙한 언어를 사용하면 할수록 에스겔이 그려내는 것이 낯설어지는 아이러니를 발생케 한다.
이러한 낯설음과 모호함은 왜 발생하는가? 그것은 궁극적으로 하나님이 형체를 갖지 않고, 포착할 수 없는 분이기 때문이다. 그래서 에스겔의 신적 환상 묘사는 정교할수록 모호해지고, 친숙한 언어를 사용할수록 낯설어지는 결과를 낳는다.

영어초록

The Chapter 1 of the book of Ezekiel in the Old Testament shows us the most exquisite and detail description of the divine vision. It is not easy to find more detail and long description of the divine vision than this. Ezekiel described his experience of the divine vision in full. Like relay, he describes to us one after another vividly what he is watching. He describes what he experienced very familiar words. Therefore, we think that we can apprehend the reality of God whom Ezekiel experienced in his divine vision.
But even after reading the chapter 1 of the book of Ezekiel several times, we can not know what it is for Ezekiel to experience. We feel grotesque and obscure. This feeling of grotesque and obscurity and strangeness becomes intensified in spite of the exquisite and detail and familiar description. It is irony. Why does this irony occur?
First, because God is elusive, intangible, and un-understandable. Therefore, we can not apprehend God through our senses. However, we, human beings, can recognize something only by our senses and we can describe our experience, even the divine vision, only by our sensual description. Therefore, the reality of God should be reduced and changed in the process of our experience by senses.
Second, because there should be difference between what anybody experiences and what he describes it. The reality and the description of something are not always coincident. There are more cases of discordance between them.
Ezekiel uses some hebrew words in order to describe what he experienced: marʾeh, demut. These words mean "appearance (of something)" and "likeness (of something)". Therefore, marʾeh and demut of something does not indicate directly the reality of something, but the appearance or the likeness, image of something. For example, marʾeh or demut of hand is not the real hand, but the hand-likeness, the image of hand.
This discordance between what Ezekiel experienced and what he described by the hebrew words causes severe obscurity and even though we read the divine vision of Ezekiel several times, we can not understand what Ezekiel experienced.
These obscurity and strangeness of the description of the divine vision in the book of Ezekiel are caused by the elusiveness of God and the difference between reality and description.
