초록

이 글은 遜庵 申晟圭의 『論語講義』를 분석하여 그 특징과 의의를 고찰한 것으로, 요지는 아래와 같다.
손암의 『논어강의』는 그가 평생의 정력을 바쳐 이룩한 학문적 성과라 할 수 있다. 형식적인 측면에서의 특징과 의의는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 주자의 『논어집주』를 저본으로 하여 『근사록』의 체제를 본떠 17개 주제에 맞추어 체제를 개편하였다. 이는 『논어』를 해체하여 재구성한 것으로 종전에 볼 수 없는 매우 독특한 경우이다. 둘째, 1章을 分章하여 내용 중심으로 재배치하기도 하였다. 이는 종래의 『논어』를 내용 중심으로 일부 개정하였다는 데 그 의미가 있다. 셋째, 주자의 『논어집주』를 위주로 하면서도 필요한 경우 대전본 소주 및 陸九淵·歸有光 등의 설을 취하고 있다. 이는 『논어집주』의 설만을 추종하지 않고 폭넓게 다양한 설을 수용한 것이다. 넷째, 전대의 설 가운데 본지를 밝힌 설 위주로 취사선택하고 있다. 이는 『논어집주』의 설 가운데서 다시 선택한 것이라는 점에 그 의미가 있다. 다섯째, 자신의 견해를 按說로 附記하여 본지를 더 심도 있게 해석하였다. 이는 종래의 설을 바탕으로 새롭게 의리를 발명해 놓았다는 데 의미가 있다.
내용적인 측면에서의 특징과 의의는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 본문의 의미를 보다 심층적으로 명확하게 해석하고 있다. 이는 종래 해석의 미비점을 보완하여 본지를 더 명확히 해석하거나 심도 있게 해석하였다는 데 그 의미가 있다. 둘째, 독자적으로 의리를 발명한 것이 다수 있다. 그 가운데는 자득을 통해 본지를 해석한 것, 문맥을 중시하여 본지를 해석한 것, 언외의 본지를 탐구한 것 등이 있다. 이는 전인이 밝히지 못한 의리나 본지를 새롭게 발명하였다는 데 그 의미가 있다. 셋째, 『논어집주』와 다른 해석을 한 것이 다수 있다. 그 가운데는 程子·朱子의 설과 다른 해석, 諸家說과 다른 해석, 『논어집주』 이외의 설을 제시한 것 등이 있다. 이는 손암의 『논어강의』 해석이 『논어집주』의 설만을 추종하지 않고 異見을 제시하거나 異說을 수용한 것으로, 해석의 폭이 넓고 다양해졌다는 데 그 의미가 있다.
이러한 『논어강의』의 해석의 특징은 경학사적으로 다음과 같은 의의가 있다.
첫째, 종래의 『논어』를 해체하여 『근사록』의 체제를 본떠 재구성한 유일한 작품이다. 우리나라 『논어』 해석사에서 종래의 『논어』를 해체하여 재구성한 것이 없다. 이와 유사한 것으로는 旅軒 張顯光(1554-1637)의 「論語圖」에 各章을 내용 중심으로 분류해 도표로 그려놓은 것이 유일한데, 손암은 내용 중심으로 도표화하는 데서 그치지 않고, 아예 『근사록』의 체제를 본떠 새롭게 재구성하였다. 이는 우리나라에서만 유일할 뿐만 아니라, 동아시아 『논어』해석사에서도 전에 없던 해석이다. 둘째, 주자의 『논어집주』를 근간으로 하여 본지에 적합한 설을 취사선택하였다. 이는 집주의 諸說 중에서 다시 가려 뽑아 본지를 명확히 이해하고자 한 것이다. 셋째, 주자의 『논어집주』에 국한하지 않고 다양한 설을 취하고 있다. 이는 주자의 설만을 절대존신하던 학풍 속에서 보다 폭넓은 시각으로 해석하고자 한 사유를 보여주는 것이다. 넷째, 심층적으로 본지를 해석하거나 독자적으로 의리를 발명하여 『논어』 해석의 지평을 크게 확장하였다. 이는 『논어』 해석이 근대에도 얼마든지 새로운 시각으로 재해석될 수 있다는 시야를 열어놓은 것이다.

영어초록

This study set out to investigate the characteristics and significance of Lectures on Analects of Confucius by Sonam Shin Seong-gyu through its analysis. The main findings were summarized as follows: Lectures on Analects of Confucius was Sonam’s academic achievement to which his lifelong enthusiasm was devoted. The study examined its characteristics and significance in terms of system and content and drew the following conclusions: as for its characteristics and significance in terms of form, first, it was based on Collection of Analects of Confucius by Zhu Xi, modeled itself on Geunsarok, and reorganized the system according to 17 topics. It deconstructed and reorganized Analects of Confucius, thus presenting a very unique, unprecedented case. Second, it divided Chapter 1 and placed it at the center of content, which is significant in that it partially revised Analects of Confucius with a focus on content. Third, it employed Daejeonbon Soju and theories of Yuk Gu-yeon and Gui Yu-gwang when necessary while it was mainly based on Collection of Analects of Confucius by Zhu Xi, which indicates that he accepted various theories broadly instead of following only those of Collection of Analects of Confucius. Fourth, he mainly chose and employed the old theories whose main purports were revealed, which is significant in that he made a choice again among the theories of Collection of Analects of Confucius. Finally, he added his own opinions and thus interpreted the main purports with more depth, which is significant in that he invented a new Uiri based on the old theories.
As for its characteristics and significance in terms of content, first, it interpreted the meanings of the body in a more profound and clearer fashion, which is significant in that it supplemented the lacking aspects of the old interpretations and provided clearer or more profound interpretations of main purports. Second, it presents many independent inventions of Uiri, which include the ones that interpreted the main purports through self-complacency, interpreted the main purports with an emphasis on the context, or explored the unexpressed main purports. It is significant in that it invented new Uiri or main purports that the previous scholars could not shed light on. Finally, it offers many different interpretations from Collection of Analects of Confucius, which includes different interpretations from the theories of Jeongja and Zhu Xi or Jegaseol and theories other than Collection of Analects of Confucius. It is significant in that Sonam proposed different opinions and accepted different theories in his Lectures on Analects of Confucius instead of merely following the theories of Collection of Analects of Confucius, thus becoming wider and more diverse in interpretations.
Those interpretative characteristics of Lectures on Analects of Confucius hold the following significance in the history of Chinese classics studies: first, it is the only work that deconstructed the old Analects of Confucius and reorganized it based on the system of Geunsarok. Not only is it unique to Korea, but it also presents unprecedented interpretations in the interpretative history of Analects of Confucius. Second, it chose and employed the theories fit for the main purports based on Collection of Analects of Confucius by Zhu Xi, which reveals his intention to understand the main purports clearly by selecting among the many theories of Collection of Analects of Confucius again. Third, it employed various theories, not restricted to Collection of Analects of Confucius by Zhu Xi, which explains why he tried to do interpretations from a broader perspective in the middle of the academic tradition of absolute trust only in the theories of Zhu Xi. Finally, it interpreted the main purports in-depth or invented Uiri independently, thus expanding the horizon of interpretations of Analects of Confucius considerably, which opens a new way of thinking that Analects of Confucius can be re-interpreted from a new perspective as much as one wants even in modern times.
