근대 중국의 ‘신학술운동’과 인문학 (The New Academic Movement in Modern China and the Humanities)

초록

필자는 근대 중국학술의 발전과정과 최근 동향 및 미래 방향에 관련하여 ①중국 근대 신학술운동의 발전과정, ②중국 근대 신학술운동에서 나타난 몇 가지 문제, ③인문학의 미래 발전 방향 등 세 가지 방향에서 살펴보고자 하였다.
淸末民初 이후 신지식계층이 주도한 ‘신학술운동’의 기원과 ‘신학술운동’이 이끈 학술연구의 특징을 5가지로 개괄하고 이러한 특징들이 근대 중국의 학술발전―특히 인문학 발전의 기조―을 이루었다. 그러나 늦어도 1920년대 후반부터는 공산당과 국민당 좌우 두 정당이 점차 큰 세력을 형성하면서 모두 ‘黨義’로써 학문을 주도하고자 했는데, 이러한 점은 근대 중국학술발전의 여러 방해요인이 되었다.
인문학은 자연과학과 다르기 때문에 현지생활과 밀접한 관련이 있으며, 특히 사람들의 정신, 사상세계와는 불가분의 관계가 있다. 따라서 논문 및 전문서적 발표 이외에 인문학술의 발전에서 가장 중요한 것은 물론 ‘연구’이지만, 현지사회가 제시하는 意義ㆍ사상ㆍ정신ㆍ가치 등에 대한 요구 또한 관심을 가져야 한다.

영어초록

This thesis is about on the historical development of the new academic movement in modern China, and reflections of how the historical course of this academic movement influenced modern scholarship. My thesis is divided into three parts: First, I will discuss the historical origins and development of the new academic movement in modern China. Second, I will discuss various problems arising from this new academic movement. Third, I will briefly discuss possible directions for the future development of the humanities in EastAsia.
In this thesis, I have provided a brief overview of the origins of the new academic movement launched by this new stratum of intellectuals in the late Qing and early Republican period. The characteristics of the scholarship and research advocated by this "new academic movement" can be summed up in five points. These five characteristics formed the basic direction for the development of new academics(especially the humanities) in modern China. However, in the end of the 1920s at the latest, the political parties of the left and the right grew increasingly strong. Both the Kuomindang and the Chinese Communist Party believed that "party guidelines" should lead scholarship. This of course created considerable disruption to modern Chinese scholarship. I would like to emphasize that in contrast to the natural sciences, the humanities are closely linked to the local life of the people. The humanities should develop closer ties to local culture, and the humanities should connected more to the mental world and spiritual spheres. Thus, even though research is the most important factor in the writing and publication of dissertations, articles, and monographs, as much attention as possible should be given the value-based aspects of research in the humanities.
