신소설에 비친 개화기 의료의 모습 (Medical Care during the Time of Enlightenment, Reflected on Sinsoseols)

초록

근대의학 도입 및 정착 과정에 대한 거시적 연구는 많지만 개화기 의료 문화를섬세하게 다룬 미시적 연구는 찾기 어렵다. 이는 당시 민중이 남긴 사료나 민중들의모습을 담은 사료가 드물기 때문이다. 본 연구는 이러한 한계를 극복하기 위해 신소설에 비친 개화기 의료의 모습을 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 우선 신소설에는 전통한의학 체계에서 명명된 병명들과 민간에서 부르던 속칭의 병명, 그리고 일본식으로번역된 서양의학 체계의 병명이 혼용되어 사용되고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 하지만‘신경’, ‘뇌’, ‘정신’과 같은 근대적 의학용어들이 빈번하게 사용되고 있어, 근대의학적지식이 확산되고 있다는 사실도 짐작해 볼 수 있었다. 또한 근대식 의술과 의사가긍정적으로 묘사되는 경우가 많았으며, 특히 간호부, 산파, 우두파원들이 중요하게다루어지고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 그리고 신소설에서 가장 빈번하게 다루어지는 질병은 정신병과 외상이었다. 반면 두창이나 결핵 이외에 전염병은 별로 다루어지지않았다. 또한 신소설 속에는 두창에 대해 여전히 배송굿에 의지하는 전근대적 모습이 자주 등장하는데, 다른 전염병과는 달리 우두법이라는 명확한 대응방법이 있었던만큼 이는 조선 및 일제 의료행정의 한계를 보여주고 있는 것이라 할 수 있다. 아울러신소설 속 위생행정을 묘사하는 데 있어 경찰이 개입하는 상황이 많았다는 점도같은 맥락에서 살펴볼 필요가 있다.

영어초록

Although there are many macro studies on the introduction and settlement ofmodern medicine, it is difficult to find microscopic studies delicately dealing with theflowering medical culture. It is because there are only a few historical records leftby the people at the time and those containing the lives of the people at the time.
In order to overcome these limitations, this study analyzed Sinsosels(new novels)using the knowledge related to medical-history. As a result of the analysis, Sinsoselsuse the names of diseases originated from the traditional oriental medicine system,the common names of diseases, and those originated from the Western medicinesystem translated into Japanese interchangeably. However, we can guess that modernmedical knowledge was spreading during the era because modern medicalterminologies such as ‘nerve’, ‘brain’ and ‘mental’ are frequently used in these novels.
In addition, there were many cases of positive descriptions of modern medicine anddoctors, and these novels depicted nurses, midwives, and medical assistants ofsmallpox vaccination as important occupations in the healthcare system. And themost frequently appeared illnesses were mental illness and external injury. On the other hand, infectious diseases other than smallpox or tuberculosis were not dealtmuch in these novels. It is noteworthy that people in Sinsoseols still relied on theshamanist cults for smallpox. Since vaccination against smallpox was available at thattime unlike other infectious diseases, it clearly shows the limitations of Chosun andJapanese health administration. Additionally, it is necessary to discuss the fact thatpolice intervention frequently appeared in describing the health administration inSinsoseols in the same context.
