영화 <신과 함께>의 저승 이미지 연구 (A Study on the Hell Imagein the Movie Along with the Gods)

초록

영화 <신과 함께:죄와 벌>, <신과 함께:인과 연>은 각각 천만 관객 이상을 기록한 메가 히트작이다. 원작 웹툰 역시 포털에서 인기리에 연재된 후 단행본 만화로도 90만 부 이상이 판매되는 성과를 보였다.
그간 <신과 함께>에 대한 연구는 주로 웹툰/만화를 중심으로 진행되었고 영화에 대한 연구는 드물었다. 따라서 본 연구는 영화를 대상으로 하여 영화에서의 저승 이미지 구현과 상상력에 대해 초점을 맞춤으로써 영화를 지탱하는 주제를 살피고 한국 신화와 시왕신앙 등 우리 문화원형 자료들이 어떻게 영화적으로 활용 및 변용되어 효과적으로 주제와 메시지를 전달하는지 알아보았다.
영화 <신과 함께>에서 가장 큰 볼거리는 단연 저승 이미지 구현이다. 7개의 지옥과 사이공간을 포함한 저승공간의 구현, 저승시왕 및 저승차사와 같은 상상적 존재의 형상화는 환상성과 몰입감을 증대시킨다. 물론 영화는 저승 이미지 원형을 원작 웹툰 나아가 한국 신화의 저승관, 시왕신앙을 도상화한 시왕도로부터 차용한 게 사실이다. 그러나 원형은 매체와 이야기, 그리고 시대적 감각과 정서에 맞게 변용되어야 한다. 영화 <신과 함께>는 이를 현대 한국 관객의 정서와 감성에 맞게 변용하였다. 그래서 테마파크의 놀이기구를 타듯 속도감 있게 이동하는 ‘저승 여정’의 스펙터클과 액션 판타지의 쾌감으로 관객의 감각을 붙잡는다. 또 한편으로는 자식과 부모의 관계, 진정한 뉘우침과 용서라는 메시지를 통하여 정서적으로 접근한다. 영화의 이러한 전략은 ‘과잉신파’라는 비판에도 불구하고 관객을 움직여 ‘쌍천만 영화’의 동력으로 작용하였다.

영어초록

The movies Along with the Gods:The Two Worlds and Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days were mega box office hits that recorded over ten million audiences each. The original webtoon was also popular on internal portals and also sold over 900,000 issues when published as comic books.
Studies on Along with the Gods mainly focused on webtoons/ comics, but there were few studies on the movie. Therefore, this study focused on the image configuration and imagination of the afterlife in the movie to investigate the theme that supports the movie and to examine the how archetype of the traditional Korean culture such as Korean myths and shamanist beliefs(faith in Shiwang) were used and transformed cinematically to effectively convey its theme and message.
The biggest attraction of the movie Along with the Gods was definitely the configuration of the image of the hell. The creation of the afterlife space including seven hells and half-way spaces and the configuration of imaginative beings such as the kings of hell and psychopomp enhanced fantastic elements and a sense of immersion. It is well-known that the movie used the original webtoon, views on the afterlife in Korean mythology, and Ten-King paintings(Shiwangdo) in creating its image of the afterlife. However, the original must be transformed to fit the media, story, and senses and emotions of the times. The movie Along with the Gods was transformed to fit the emotions and sentiments of Korean audiences. The senses of the audience are thus captivated with the spectacles of a roller-coaster-like speedy ‘afterlife journey’ and the excitement of action fantasy genres. It also approaches the sentiments through the message on the relationship of parents and children, genuine repenting and forgiveness. Such strategy of this movie moved audiences despite criticism that it is ‘excessively melodramatic’, thus being able to attract over ten million audiences for each episode.
