비학의 심화, 포세신의 존비정신 (Deepening of Studying Stele, Bao Shichen’s Spirit of Respecting Stele)

초록

포세신(包世臣 : 1775-1855)은 자신의 『예주쌍즙(藝舟雙楫)』『논서(論書)』에서 북비(北碑)를 배울 것을 주장하였는데, 논한 바가 모두 독특하여 후세에 많은 영향을 주었다. 청대 비학(碑學) 운동의 일차적 의의는 심원한 변혁이었다. 그것은 학술적인 기초, 심미적인 관점, 창작의 사유, 본받을 대상 등 일련의 범주에서 모두 새로운 의의를 지니고 있다.
포세신 자신이 「술서하(述書下)」에서 밝혔듯이 그의 서학이론은 집필(執筆)․운봉(運鋒)․결자(結字) 세 가지 측면의 내용을 벗어나지 않았다. 그렇지만 그것들의 뚜렷한 지향점은 바로 존비정신(尊碑精神)이었다. 포세신의 존비정신은 주로 세 가지 방면으로 체현되었다. 첫째 그의 학서(學書)의 과정과 경험을 정리하면서 필법과 서법 그리고 기타 표현형식에 대한 그의 탐색과 추구를 상세히 소개하였다. 둘째 비첩(婢妾) 고증의 기초 위에서 역대 서가들과 그 창작에 대해 자세히 정리하면서 북비의 여러 석각들 차제를 품평하고 느낌을 말하고 우열을 나누고 아울러 북비 필법에 대해 탐색하고 설명하였다. 이는 맹목적이던 당시 서단에 대해서든 비학의 진일보한 심화에 대해서든 모두 적극적인 추동작용을 하였다. 셋째 청대 전기 당시까지 서가와 작품에 대한 등급을 나열을 통하여 현실적인 창작에 대한 그의 관심을 드러내었다. 그 요지는 왕희지를 우상으로 삼던 첩학일통(帖學一統)의 오랜 형식을 타파하여 북비를 부흥하고 서법의 새로운 경지에 도달하는 데에 있었다. 포세신의 이와 같은 필법 연구를 핵심으로 하는 학술적 성과는 비학의 체계를 충실하고 완벽하게 하였으며 자신이 견지했던 존비정신을 완전하게 구현해 냈다.
요컨대 포세신으로 인해 비학은 첩학(帖學)에 도전하고 미약한 서풍을 전환할 수 있었으며, 동시에 비학파(碑學派)들의 창작활동에 견실한 물질적 재료와 최적의 참고를 제공하였다. 나아가 만청 내지는 근대의 서법에 새로운 풍조를 일으킨 데에 있다.

영어초록

Bao Shichen(包世臣, 1775-1855) insisted on learning the Northern Stele in『Yizhoushuangji(藝舟雙楫)』,『Lunshu(論書)』, all of which was unique and influenced posterity. The primary significance of the movement of studying stele in Qing dynasty was a profound transformation. It has a new meaning in a range of categories: academic foundation, aesthetic point of view, thinking of creation and object to emulate.
As Bao Shichen himself mentioned in「Shushu Xia(述書下)」, his theory of studying calligraphy did not deviate from the three aspects: holding brush, wielding brush and structuring character. However, their clear intention was the spirit of respecting stele. Bao Shichen's spirit of respecting stele was embodied in three ways. First, he summarized the process and experience of his learning calligraphy and introduced in detail the law of using brush, the calligraphy law and other forms of expression that he investigated and pursued. Second, based on the historically researched stele, he wrote out the calligraphers and their creations in detail and criticized the various stone carvings of the northern stele by grading them. He also shared his feelings about them, classified the superiority and the inferiority, and explored and explained the calligraphy law of the northern stele. That was an active driving force for both the improvement of the field of calligraphy which was aimless in those days and the deepening of studying stele. Third, he revealed his interest in realistic creation by listing the grades of the calligraphers and their works until the early Qing Dynasty. The point was to break through the old convention of studying calligraphy only with manuscripts which made Wang Xizhi an idol, to revive the northern stele and to reach a new level of calligraphy. Bao Shichen’s academic achievements focused on the study of calligraphy law developed and perfected the system of studying stele and fully embodied his spirit of respecting stele.
In short, Bao Shichen made the study of stele compete with the study of manuscripts, and the calligraphy in those days was able to overcome the weak style of calligraphy, while at the same time he provided reliable material and optimal references to the creative activities of the group of studying stele. Furthermore, the significance of his achievements is in bringing about a new trend of calligraphy in the late Qing Dynasty and modern days.
